How was yours?

For me:

1 bed flat with just me in it. Heating on at 21 in the day, 18 overnight this year for health reasons. Tumble dryer used once a week.

Gas 1570kwh / £160.77 (last year 706kwh)

Electric 56kwh / £18.49 (last year 149kwh)

Standing charges £23.16

£202.42 altogether, so about what I expected.

Monthly missile just arrived from Bulb. £241 for January (I'd guessed it'd be around £240 as DD home for three weeks and we had another guest for a week). December was £258 (but it was -7c to-12c at nights for over a week and that takes some heating up the house).

On a positive, our heating switched off before timer this morning as it'd come up to temperature - that hasn't happened for a good couple of months. Next couple of nights are meant to be warmer here, so hoping that'll happen tomorrow and Sat before it turns cold again.

ifonly4 · 02/02/2023 15:29

Forgot to say, we have a converted dormer bungalow with extension, making a four bed property).

MenopauseSucks · 02/02/2023 15:34

Gas & electric £335 for January.
It was £346 in December.
I guess it was the cold snaps in both months as I only used £240 in November!

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 02/02/2023 21:33

4 bed, dual fuel £482.

It's been freezing in the house, no heating in the mornings, on for 2 hours at night and set to 18 (usually gets to about 14/15 during the day). Just had the house renovated and it's as well insulated as it can be. Live in oodies and have so many hot water bottles it's become a hobby filling them up Smile

Franticbutterfly · 02/02/2023 22:44

£400 for electric and gas in Jan. Had heating on for a couple of hours each day. We have a good sized 4 bedroom house, 5 people.

The bill was £450 in Dec.

BubziOwl · 02/02/2023 22:51

3 bed, quite an old house, £250 used in January 😭 the highest energy monthly cost we've ever had. Really wasn't expecting it, but then it's the first month since we finally came off our old fixed tariff so there we go I guess

xogossipgirlxo · 04/02/2023 10:46

Combined 190 quid, 1551kwh. 2 bed house, 2 adults

ThatsRoughBuddy · 04/02/2023 15:05

Gas £45 for 865 kWh
Electricity £64 for 284kwh

4 bed semi-detached, 2 adults at home all day + 2 teens. We've had the heating on a fair bit so was expecting a higher bill but it was only £8 more than last months.

We actually paid £0 as we had a £100 payment from Octopus to help with bill + the £67 government payment.

Electric - £49.41
Gas - £80.47
3 bed house, heating has been on, up to 19. Tumble dryer has been on, I WFH and 2 teenagers at home.

Are you on a previously fixed tariff or something? I'm in a similar position and have tried to be frugal with the heating set to 16c and January came to £260. Our electric was £128. I have also used an open fire to try and help with costs.

energycrysis · 04/02/2023 18:59

I don't get a monthly bill, but my app says £70.73 usage for electricity and £142.71 for gas.

I'm not sure if that includes my standing charge and tax?

Does anyone know?

I'm in a large 2 bed flat, just me and one teen who likes often has two showers a day. And I've started just putting the heating on whenever I please. I can't stand the cold and I have some credit. Plus I was getting awful condensation when I was being stubborn about it.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 19:17

Work it out by checking how many kwh you've used for each fuel, then multiply that by the amount you pay per kwh.

£410 for Jan in total. 4 bed detached, 4 people. Thermostat 15 during the day, 18 for an hour morning and eve. We have an electric vehicle and a lot TVs, devices etc.

kikisparks · 04/02/2023 19:22

Bulb have sent our estimated bill- “You've used £649.61 of energy since 1st January.”

We have heating to 19 max, 17 more usually, off when we’re out and are in a mid sized 3 bed terrace, that just can’t be right surely.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 19:26

Just check their estimate against your meter readings...

OP posts:
kikisparks · 04/02/2023 19:30

Yeah we will need to apparently DH did a metre reading last month and it was £500. We’re already cold will just need to be colder I guess as £500 p//m isn’t affordable. Will try to have it off May to September too.

Tried that, but gas isn't calculated like that, is it? Can't get it to work out.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 19:34

December had a huge cold snap and my heating bill was higher than January's.

Don't forget that it's only going to be really expensive over winter and balance itself out over summer - usually heating accounts for 80% of annual gas use, and you're not going to pay £500/mth for twelve months.

Gas is billed per kwelh used - its measured on your meter in m³ or ft³.
Any previous bill will give you the formula you need to convert that into kwh.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 19:36

kwelh = kwh

Four bed semi here. Five weeks from last week of November to 31st December the bill was almost £600 FFS.

January it was £350. Fortunately I had a large credit but I’ve had to top up the DD this month in anticipation of February.

I’ve never had a bill for more than £220 before ever.

itsgettingweird · 04/02/2023 19:39

January 2023

Electricity £66 203 kWh
Gas £85 831 KWh

January 2022

Electricity £55 279 kWh
Gas £38 1138 kWh

Just goes to show how much gas has risen in price and I really hope it comes down at some point as without wage increases this will be untenable for some Sad

I'd cry at those bills.

Medium / small 3 bed house, new build, well insulated etc £230 on electric. So cost me £160 ish with discount added. Relieved it wasn't more, I've been tumbledrying school uniform in a panic and putting heating on a fair bit. No other fuel/energy bills.
