We (Me, DH, DS who is 1 and dairy free) spend around £120-£140 per week.

We’ve always had to go to Tesco for DF things and tried shopping at Aldi for the rest. The bill is around £120 p/w. If we do a full shop in Tesco it’s £140 p/w. This will include nappies, toiletries, a bottle of wine, crate of beer.

we try to eat healthy with lots of fruit, veg, fresh meat and fish. But it’s just getting too expensive to maintain 😞

how much do you spend? Would you mind sharing your shopping list?

thank you x

We spend around £60-65 per week for two adults and one child (11).

Breakfasts are usually things like:
Overnight oats with oat milk
Cereal
Sometimes pancakes
Toast
Sometimes porridge
Aldi's frozen pain au chocolates or croissants
Egg and soldiers
There's fruit in as well if still hungry

Packed lunch for DD:
Apple
Cheese/tuna/ham sandwich
Cheese string or dairy lee dunkers
Grapes
Yoghurt
Penguin bar

Lunches for me and DP:
Egg on toast (if we've not had toast or egg earlier) with avocado or mushrooms
Chicken and veg
Noodles with chicken
Tuna and cheese toasties
Soup
Fish finger sandwiches
Sausages with rice and veg

Dinners:
Roast dinners
Fajitas
Curries with rice
Lasagne
Various pasta bakes/pasta dishes
Pork stew
Lots of one pot dishes really
Stir fries

For snacks we've always got a few different fruits in (apples and bananas usually), a couple of packs of Aldi's own brand twix and mars bars etc.

We just try and make use out of what we've bought to reduce wastage. For example if we made a pasta sauce one night we mince meat we might use leftovers for jacket potato and chilli the next night. I know it's a cliché when people say bulk out your meals but it's true. We'll use the mince with onion, mushroom, carrot, celery for the pasta and the next night we'll take the leftover sauce and add cannelloni beans, a tin of tomatoes and chilli powder to make a totally different tasting meal. If we don't fancy it we freeze it and have it another night.

AdInfinitum12 · 05/02/2023 15:42

We don't really drink, that keeps the cost down. I do enjoy fizzy drinks but Aldi's fizzy orange and lemonade are pennies so it's alright.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 05/02/2023 15:47

2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 child
this week was £85- we have stuff in the cupboards and fridge already- shop at aldi (will do a £20 fruit/ milk top up mid week)

ForeverTeach · 05/02/2023 16:01

3 adults, 2 teens, 2 cats and a dog and we spend £315 a week. 2 vegetarians and rest meat eaters. Meat eaters eat 2 veggie meals a week. That includes all animal food, toiletries, gusto box and other food. It is a lot but we can afford it and I am too busy to trawl loads of shops. I shop at Aldi and pop next door to Homebargins. I buy ethically where I can too. I pay separately for my youngest teen school lunch £20 a week.

Iamnotanugget · 06/02/2023 17:22

We're a family of 5 and I try to keep the food bill to around £80-90 a week. This week I didn't need a lot but priced up in Sainsbury's, £62.25, and in Tesco, £53.10. While it's a long process I actually split the shop over both of them and Aldi and the total came to £43.16

Pretty much everything we eat is made from scratch, vegetarian/ vegan and includes lots of fresh and frozen vegetables

Miserablehag · 06/02/2023 18:09

£70 every ten days for 1 and usually contains:

chicken (most meat meals are this) so usually around 10 breasts a time purchased and are my most expensive item
chicken sausage or turkey bacon
tuna tins x 3
sweet potato
jacket potato
green veg, usually a pack of beans, two brocolli, savoy cabbage
carrots
spinach
salad bag
cucumber
berries - more when in season but usually at least a punnet of blueberries
bananas
Eggs x12
egg whites
milk 2pt
cream cheese
protein yoghurts x 5
some sort of choco mousse dessert
baked beans x 2
tinned soup x 1
rice pouches
stirfry sauce sachets
dog treats
bagel thins
wraps
crisps
chocolate bar multipack
cereal bar or some sort
squash
frozen veg for soup/peas etc
ice cream in summer
Packet ham to wrap the dog’s meds in!

condiments, oils, garlic etc and things I use less of like cheese, butter, cans of diet coke, tea/coffee, cleaning products and dog food are usually picked up every couple of months so cost in addition.

i hate that it costs me that much for just me! I also eat out at my parent’s once a week and probably have a meal out or takeaway once a fortnight.

Miserablehag · 06/02/2023 18:11

Oh and usually a ready meal lasagne or something in there too, for my late night returns.

it helps my food is mostly a version of chicken/a carb/veg most nights with various sauces and seasonings - i am a repetitive eater!

SquigglePigs · 06/02/2023 18:13

We probably spend the same ish as you for two adults and a 4 year old. It doesn't tend to look as much because our Tesco delivery will be anything from £70-£100 but a lot of the meat and fish tends to have come from a Farmers market or a once every 6-8 wk Waitrose order.

emmathedilemma · 06/02/2023 20:39

£48 tonight for one adult but it was a bit of an ad-hoc shop:
chicken and stir fry veg will do 2 dinners (tues & wed), possibly 3 as it’s a big bag of veg. I have rice and noodles in the cupboard.
a pizza base (Thursday dinner) to top and a block of cheese which will do pizza and sandwiches next week.
a pot of soup for lunch Tues & Wed - i used to eat one of these in a sitting but now I’m trying to only have half for the sake of my waistline and bank balance!
bags of frozen butternut squash will make 3-4 portions of soup for lunches next week or the freezer, likewise the bag of casserole veg.
turkey & ham for sandwiches to have with soup (there’s rolls in the freezer)
eggs to scramble or make frittata (there’s bagels in the freezer and I was going to buy smoked salmon but it was £4.50 so I resisted)
2 packs of alpro fruit yogurt cos they’re on offer and have a long bb4 date
big pot of plain soya yogurt for breakfasts
pasta sauce for emergency dinner
chicken sausages cos they were on offer and will keep for next week
2 packs of apples (on 2 for £3.50 deal), I have one most days for packed lunch
celery, cucumber and bananas for snacks
loaf of bread to keep in the freezer
a bottle of wine for later in the week

i buy almond milk in bulk from Aldi as it’s cheapest there and have a decent stock of cereals, rice, pasta etc.

For me and two hungry teens:

Large organic fruit and veg box delivered weekly: £26 per week
Milk, cream or yoghurt, bread, eggs, cheese and coffee, delivered by the milkman: £35 per week
Meat box delivered monthly: £18 per week
Cat food from Lidl: £10
Loo roll, delivered every few months or so: £3 per week
Cleaning products, toiletries from Lidl: £10
Canned and packet food: £15

Total: £117 per week.

We eat well on this, not much junk, but kids despite taking packed lunches still spend about £16 between them extra at school. None of us drink and we have meat twice per week.

NorthernSoul55 · 07/02/2023 19:18

Average £70 pw, 2 adults, both retired, at home plus occasional visiting children/grandchildren, so this is for all meals plus cleaning stuff. I could feed us on less but don't need to (yet!) Pet food is bought in bulk from Amazon so that's roughly another £60 per month (very large dog and cat with multiple allergies)
I shop at Aldi with an occasional small spend elsewhere.
We eat well, I meal plan for every meal though it is flexible and can swap about. The bulk of the spend is fruit and veg, small amount of meat/fish, general groceries. I don't buy a lot of prepared or processed food and we throw away nothing.
We sometimes have a week when we feed ourselves from what is in the cupboards and freezer, which makes for some interesting meals!

Bodybarnet · 09/02/2023 10:36

I've started using lollipop app and their meal plans and use the shopping list instore rather than online shop.
There's 4 of us me, dh, 2 ds (17,11). This week cost me £54 in Sainsbury's including fruit and lunch bits and a few other things. Saving me a fortune.
I did use a Sainsbury's voucher though that took £4.50 off my shop

Here's my receipt 😊

I'm on a mission to cut down our shopping bill. I made the switch to Aldi (mostly - still a few brands from Sainsbury's, and they also price match to Aldi on some items)ages ago, gave up the booze (now DH has as well), cook (mostly) from scratch whilst succumbing to the occasional Charlie Bigham fish pie if it's on offer and I'm pushed for time.

There's me, DH and DS is away at university, but home for holidays and the occasional weekend, when I like to treat him. Also a dog.

By the end of tomorrow, I will have spent £140 on groceries, cleaning products, toiletries for me and DH in the 11 days starting 31 Jan. On Saturday, I'll need to top up on fruit and I'll probably make a trip to the butcher and buy something relatively cheap like sausages or chicken wings. We've got 18 days of Feb to go, and I'm aiming to feed us (and keep us clean!) on no more than a tenner a day.

DS is home next weekend, so I will get some nice meals and treats organised. But I will be shopping the cupboards and eking out what we have (lots of veggy meals) either side of that weekend in order to create space in the budget for a mid-month mini splurge.

DH buys his lunches separately, from his own account. And the dog food is on top of this.

I feel like this is one area where I can realistically exercise some control. I can't stop paying for contact lenses, or energy, or insurance, or DS' rent, but with food I can make some changes that keep costs down and which still bring us pleasure and comfort.
