What's a good value second hand family car (has to be quite large to fit 4 quite tall adults/teens)

I don't care about being stylish or cool, just purely practical.
It probably won't get used a great deal as I WFH but we do about 2.5k miles travelling abroad in the summer.
I'm thinking of something like a vauxhall insignia or ford focus though not sure of the legroom in those yet.
I think Vauxhalls and fords are cheaper second hand as there's always lots of them.
I'd like to spend no more than £7/8 k for a 5/6 year old car with 50-60k miles.

Just wondering if there's any other models people would recommend?

I've got a Citroen Picasso. Lots of room inside, big boot and windows. It's got 38K miles on the clock and 2014 reg. I paid £8500. Suggest it as a possibility?

GardenIce · 12/12/2022 19:39

Thank you@Dillydollydingdong .
I probably should have said I don't think I would buy a French car, sorry, bad reputation... maybe I'm wrong.
I also wouldn't buy something really basic like a Dacia as I'd want to have some.od cons like parking sensors, air conditioning etc.

Scoda Octavia?

MammaWeasel · 12/12/2022 19:42

Ford kuga is massive on the ìnside

our dacia has aircon

Circe7 · 12/12/2022 19:55

We also have a skoda octavia. It’s got massive boot space and is practical but not particularly exciting.

ipreferthecat · 12/12/2022 20:01

Ford C max ? Plenty of room

GardenIce · 12/12/2022 20:05

Thanks@Bigbadmama @Circe7 the Octavia is definitely an option though I think they seem slightly pricier than the insignia.

I have the Vauxhall meriva, it’s spacious and reliable. Quite affordable and easy to run (except for the high Road tax)

LittleLlama · 12/12/2022 20:06

We have a Skoda Superb Estate - which has been very affordable, reliable and comfortable. The boot is massive (which we use for the dog and/or wheelchair). The back seats are very comfortable for very tall adults.

Angelicapickles1 · 12/12/2022 20:07

Yeah my DH has a Ford C Max I have a focus. C Max is our long journey car as the boot is much bigger and more room in the back but its basically a taller focus

GardenIce · 12/12/2022 20:11

Thanks@ipreferthecat @Angelicapickles1 I hadn't thought the C max was that big but it seems that it's got more legroom than the focus.
Perhaps@Angelicapickles1 could confirm?

Yes a cmax. We got rid of our 2 years ago but it was a great car and the children still commiserate it's departure.

They’re brilliant best car we ever had.

DipmeinChoc · 12/12/2022 20:16

Qashqai

GardenIce · 12/12/2022 20:16

Thanks @LittleLlama I don't think there's many Skoda superbs available at least not in my price bracket.

I have just got shot of my insignia, worst car i have ever had. Wouldn’t touch another with a bargepole. Lots of electrical issues, apparently very common. Broke down 3x in 3 years, spent a fortune on repairs between breakdowns.

Qashqai - great boot

OfMark87 · 12/12/2022 22:40

I've got a Hyundai Tucson and I love it.
I've got young kids so needed the big boot and to fit the car seats in the back

onlyonedayaweek · 12/12/2022 22:46

We've got a Toyota Avensis which fits your spec, definitely good leg room in the back and a good boot (we've got an estate), but I'm not certain if it would miss on price - DH looked up the value of ours, it would get about £5k at 10 years old with 40k miles on the clock.

catchthedog · 12/12/2022 22:52

Hyundai Tucson has been brilliant for us

AriettyHomily · 12/12/2022 22:54

I found the qashaqi small inside. We've got a Zafira, can't fault it.

RosettaStormer · 12/12/2022 22:56

I found the Quashqui small inside too. I didn’t really like it. Boot space isn’t great either. The particulate filter kept clogging too. It was a diesel.

I would echo this. When DH called to say ours had been written off, I can't say I was sad! It was a nightmare. We bought a 3yo Mondeo estate after that and have been really happy with it (and every other Ford we've had TBH: several focuses and a Transit). The Mondeo is now 10yo with 125k on the clock, and very little has gone wrong with it in those 7 years. It isn't particularly exciting, but it is pretty cheap to run and fix, reliable, and models with all the bells and whistles are very affordable. DH now has a Citroën for work, and has moaned every day for the last week about its lack of heated windscreen whilst the Mondeo defrosts itself in a couple of minutes.

Skoda Octavia, it's a proper family car and they are built like beasts
