Door curtain

I just put up a curtain on my front door and it's made so much difference to the temperature of the whole downstairs. I live in a really old house and don't know why I haven't done this before.

And it looks cosy, and now feels cosy.

Just recommending it for people with chilly front hallways 😊

I did too, put the pole up with voile in the summer, then got a big curtain in about september to put up. It's made a huge difference. Only problem is, I picked a fairly dark one (its a burnt orange colour) so it doesn't show dirt too easily (I remember my Nan had a cream door curtain and it was a bugger for picking up mud), and now my hall is rather dark with it shut. Have to put the light on to go up the stairs, so I might not be saving as much as I hoped! 🤣

Even better with a thermal lining ( they are much lighter than they used to be.)

CrepuscularCritter · 06/12/2022 13:57

Definitely a good move. We have thermal lined curtains over the front doors, back door and cellar door. Every time I open one and feel the cold on my hands, I remember how glad I am that we put them up.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 07/12/2022 18:02

Desperate to fit one but we can't due to a 'box' set up on the hinge side of the door.

Our hall is so very cold.

I'm in a flat with stairs leading down to a communal hallway - a fire door at the bottom my steps, and a normal door at the top onto my flat hallway.

It's really chilly in my stairway, and I'm wondering if it's worth putting a thick curtain at the door at top of the stairs just to keep heat in. I've also got windows running along the top of the internal waĺl between the landing and stairs..

Dunelm sell really good thermal curtains. Definitely worth a try

@wherearebeefandonioncrisps
Could you fit a portiere rod on to you door. I had one in a previous house and it was brilliant. The curtain stays over the door when you open it. It has a slight overhang on the opening side.

Chocolatelabradorsarethebest · 07/12/2022 21:55

I’ve done the same this year and it’s made such a difference in our drafty Victorian house.

I bought some of these, really light, good quality and great value (promise I don’t work for them!).

I agree with you @polopolopolopoo

I got a pair of thermal curtains from M&S. green velvet and hung them over our front door, which is old and draughty , they have made a massive difference.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/12/2022 22:00

Did this years ago, keeps house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

polopolopolopoo · 08/12/2022 09:43

@LizzieSiddal same, M&S thermal ones, velvet, mint green, so soft and lovely, OH says it's like the entrance to a cabaret club 😆

You’ve inspired me to have a go at fitting a curtain to the 30s portiere rod on our front door. Anyone know if it still makes a difference when there are side windows that won’t be covered?

TroysMammy · 09/12/2022 12:15

I was in an air n n b a few years ago and really impressed with the curtain pole for the front door. It was on a hinge so the curtain wouldn't get in the way when the door was opened. I was so impressed I took a photo.

TroysMammy · 09/12/2022 12:15

Air b n b.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 09/12/2022 15:16

I got one in dunelm for about £20 and. Pole for about £10 although could do with a thicker pole but not going near a dunelm yet.

We're putting it up tomorrow.

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/12/2022 15:20

Ebayed a pair of long lined curtains that'll cover the door and window above it, just need to work out how I'm going to put them up (tall ceilings, short me, and a not quite high enough ladder).

Meltinthemiddle · 09/12/2022 21:45

Struggling to find any in stock or a suitable pole 😭

SueTwosNipples · 09/12/2022 21:55

I’m confused, the pics of portiere curtain poles show a curtain only covering the door. Doesn’t it need to cover the gappy bits around the edges of the doorframe though, to stop draughts?

caramac04 · 10/12/2022 10:09

@SueTwosNipples the portiere rod is slightly wider than the door so should cover the gaps. As you open the door, the rod rises slightly to prevent the curtain dragging on the floor.
I had one in a house where the front door opened into the living room. I loved it.

Willmafrockfit · 10/12/2022 10:39

we did the same
trawled through the internet, found some in a charity shop
dh had to sew to the correct length.
they are lovely.

Willmafrockfit · 10/12/2022 10:42

@Chocolatelabradorsarethebest i wanted those but they werent in stock near to me

custardcreme77 · 27/12/2022 08:55

Which width of door curtain looks best for a normal width door - the 46” or 66” width? I’m thinking the 46” might look too stretched across when drawn but the 66” might look too bulky.

fortheloveofcheesecake · 27/12/2022 09:22

We've got thermal curtains on the front door, back door, and also across the open plan living / dining room. We close them in the evening to create a smaller, warmer living room. Was the cheap option but works really well!

ChristmasCrackler · 27/12/2022 09:30

We're really pleased with ours too! I'd love another to go in a doorway which has long since had no door, but DH won't have it! I'm working on him though.
