Daily electricity cost

What is your daily cost of energy? Gas and electric?
Our smart meter is up the swanny so cannot see our daily use "in lights" as it were. So after submitting a reading two days ago, I have just now read the meter again.

We have used 4m3 of gas and 32 kwh of electric.
So over two days it is around 8.70 a day (including standing charge)

I read somewhere that a fiver a day is considered low usage. What is high or normal usage and is this about right for a family of 5? Semi detached. 1 wfh, 1 out at work and three teens.

(Sode question, it was taken at around 10am.on 9th and just now tonight - when is the standing charge added? Should I add a third day, and should individe the usage by 3? Yes, I should have done it at the same time but the other day was my day off and I have just got home!)

No gas used yet as it is only used for heating and I really am trying my best to hold out.

Electricity is 54kwh per week so approx 7.7Kwh a day. We unfortunately use a fair amount of passive electricity on a pond filter and x2 filters in the aquarium. Always on machines really do add up in terms of watts.

Off the top of my head my current electricity total is around £22.00 per week including s/c.

I don't have a smart meter so I do all this via my magic depressing money disappearing spreadsheet. It tells me all the money I have spent that week.

@Lampedsomeoiks how many people in your house? We seem to be very much over that Shock

Yeah sorry I should have said: 3 bedroom semi detached, x2 adults wfh.

The desktop pc is decent at heating the room although I use a laptop where possible unless a bigger screen / multiple screens are required.

I am being tight mind. Like soul-destroyingly tight especially with turning the shower on. A quick rinse then off. Wash then rinse. I actively dread washing now. I can't wait for the proper cold weather to start. It will be like SAS training.

Electricity, I'm using £3.50-£4.50 a day. 5 bedroom house, electric oven and hob, electric shower. Two adults and a teen.

QS90 · 11/11/2022 22:19

Well, Shell seem to think we should be paying them £280 per month (estimated not as used), so presumably £9.33 per day. We're two adults and a toddler in an old 3 bed terrace. We haven't put the heating on yet, so must be this on hot water, tumble dryer, lights and using the hob top 😶

A lady at my work was £400 as used on smart meter for two adults in a new 3 bed terrace!! She has the heating on for a couple of hours in the morning and evening when they are in (scandalous!!), so maybe it's that insane decadence that caused it...

QS90 · 11/11/2022 22:22

@Lampedsomeoiks Fair play to you, that's really good going!! And you're not on a fixed rate from the Before Times?

Cynderella · 11/11/2022 22:43

Four adults, all work from home, two serious gamers, loadsa tech, avoiding tumble dryer, careful but not seriously frugal = 13kwh a day on average.

Gas is about 9kwh a day just for hot water (showers, occasional bath, some washing up). Have only just started putting on heating for an hour or so to dry washing and warm up a bit. Probably three times so far this week.

Not prepared to cut back any further although it could come to that next winter. Getting used to not being warm - will keep going with no/limited heating, as we're not cold. But once that goes on ...

Thighdentitycrisis · 11/11/2022 23:00

I spent £1.28 today. Just me wfh all day without any heating on. No shower today! Just a strip wash and had the oven on for 20 minutes this evening.

No we are on SVR.

It is beginning to ground me down. It is no way to live. I am all for energy saving but sometimes it just makes me question life to be honest.

mumofmunchkin · 12/11/2022 08:52

According to my app, we've spent £78 since the start of Nov on gas and electricity combined, so about £7 a day, about £5 a day of that is electricity. The heating has been on for the occasional hour but not every day as its still pretty mild, and the tumble dryer has been used a bit as its been wet out. There are six of us here - including 4 kids, the youngest of whom is a baby, so while we're being careful at not being wasteful with energy, I do use the tumble dryer to keep the laundry going if it's wet out, and I do throw the heating on if the house drops much below 18.

DuckMeFed · 12/11/2022 08:57

32kwh is extremely high OP, any hot tubs? Pool pumps? Couple of EVs?

QS90 · 12/11/2022 08:58

@mumofmunchkin Yes we've not been able to avoid the tumble-drier either. Otherwise you're just hanging wet clothes in a cold house = mildewy clothes and damp house 😕

PurpleMoonbows · 12/11/2022 09:00

I recently downloaded the Loop app as I don't have a display linked to my smart meters and it was mentioned on another thread recently. Finding it very useful as trying to keep energy usage down. 2 of us in a small 2 bed mid terrace in the south east. Yesterday's figures were in the low side as it was nice weather so I don't think the heating came on. Not sure it includes the standing charge - will need to check - and it uses its own SVR as you can't enter your own tariff at the moment but it's helping me see how much energy I'm using cooking dinner etc.

Oh sorry, just reread and realised that’s over 2 days. 16kwh/day still on the higher side, but not outrageous.

For comparison we are 2 adults 2 kids in a fairly large 4 bed detached house, not skimping on tumble dryer or washing machine/dishwasher, all electric cooking appliances, and we sit around the 10-12 mark usually, 15 on a ‘bad’ day.

NightOwl101 · 12/11/2022 09:03

I'm not sure on the actual useage as from my app I just get hold how much it's cost me per day, we average around £4-£6 per day. If we're at work all day then it's obviously lower but then on days off when we're trying to catch up with washing or using the tumble it can go up to around £10 😩

tigerbear0906 · 12/11/2022 14:17

We live in a 2 up 2 down semi. 2 adults 1 teen. We are all electric with an awful energy sucking immersion heater for the hot water. We are using on average 23kw a day and Iv worked that out to be aprox £55 a week inc standing charge. (No smart meter) It's ridiculous. We've bought tiny 500w heaters to put on in the evening for a few hours when cheap electric as can't afford the 2kw storage heaters. It stresses me out how our usage is so high.

BosaNova · 12/11/2022 14:42

About 5kwh a day averaging.
Gas I am not sure about exact number but with heating 2x a day and 2 showers, plus washing up, plus daily cooking workouts about £2.50 a day on new prices. It douebled for us🙄

BosaNova · 12/11/2022 14:42

To add, 3 bed semi, 2 ppl, 1 wfh

OldTinHat · 12/11/2022 14:52

Live alone, three bed terrace, gas heating but I've not put it on yet. Dual fuel is about £57 a month usage according to my smart meter and my app.

I have two aquariums running 24/7 so that doesn't help. Also, luckily, on a fixed rate from last September.

What method does your family use to wash? Electric shower usage is a big one. How often and for how long? We have made substantial savings by turning water off whilst washing.

Also how do you cook? I bought a mini halogen oven which has helped immensely.

Does your teen play video games? If so what console / pc?

tigerbear0906 · 12/11/2022 18:21

Lampedsomeoiks (sorry don't know how to tag/quote)
No shower here. We have to put hot water on for 1.5/2 hours a day to get enough to run a bath for everyone. We do share bath water Blush
Teen has an Xbox but plays infrequently and is mostly on their iPad. I think it's having to have hot water on that takes up most usage. It is old and does not retain heat. Looking at getting new system that will retain heat as at the minute a full water tank will not keep heat into the next day. Unfortunately it's looking to cost almost £2000 to replace which we don't have at the minute. I only use washer and dryer at night when on cheap electricity. Can't dry much on airers as no radiators and the house is already slightly damp. I'm not sure what else I can do but frustrating when our home is so small and we don't even have proper central heating

BosaNova · 12/11/2022 18:27

Can you go one day withpit hot water to see what difference it makes? I did that when I was checking gas costs. Pick a day when you don't need to bath. One day of no bath eill not hurt anyone but you will see if it's really the heater.

tigerbear0906 · 12/11/2022 18:28

That is a good idea. I'll read the meters before and after a day without turning the hot water on. Thank you

Amortentia · 12/11/2022 18:36

We’re a family of four adult working from home. We were using 15kw of electricity a day and it went down to 13 The only thing that changed was we replaced the microwave. We’re now down to 10kw because I bought an air fryer, our oven is rubbish and takes ages to cook anything. I’ve been monitoring what’s on and keeping track of the meter readings I thought we used a lot of energy because of the dishwasher and tumble dryer, so it’s surprising what appliances have turned out to be energy eaters.
