@BigSkies2022 I am doing an ou degree. Criminology and psychology. Today was looking at conflict in relationships and one thing they said is 30 plus year relationships is a new thing as people didn’t live so long and definitely not both of a couple . Interesting I thought

Theskyoutsideisblue · 05/01/2023 21:53

Just Tesco today. Will need ⛽️ tomorrow

BigSkies2022 · 05/01/2023 21:58

@Theskyoutsideisblue - are you doing anything about trauma bonding? 'cos I think my dad is bonded thus to my mum, who is not a very nice person, frankly, when you strip away the social veneer.

Wolfcub · 06/01/2023 08:06

Another £28 in the vets yesterday. Managed to borrow one pan pot planet on kindle and immediately got irritated by the lay out. However there look to be some lovely recipes so I will stick at it. Happier Canada is on my bucket list you lucky thing. Big sorry things are so tough with your parents.

Had a look at whether and early July/late June hol abroad with ds would be feasible at the end of GCSEs as our second ever holiday abroad was cancelled by covid. Prohibitively expensive so will avoid and it'll be a holiday cottage on a cold northern beach instead

Had a food disaster yesterday, rare but bloody annoying and thus wasted a ton of coconut milk, a tin of black beans, rice and now need to chisel the remnants off the bottom of my pan.

Happierwithouthim · 06/01/2023 11:04

Wolf not a good day but usually your food experiments work out well.
If you were to book in advance or else do last minute go anywhere kind of a trip maybe this would be possible, I couldn't leave it to last minute like that I'd be afraid I'd end up with no holiday but for just 2 people it seems to be a cheaper way of doing things.

northender · 06/01/2023 11:28

half not unreasonable at all to be hacked off with dh. Right motive but just slightly missing the point!
I feel the pain around re elderly parents. Don't want to go into detail, but things are breaking down even more with my parents. Christmas day was spoiled by my dad & there's been nothing but stress since. Hard as I'm an only child. I just want to improve things for my mum but not sure I can. That's a job for this afternoon....
Have had a very low spend week & slowly working through the freezer. On Tuesday & Wednesday we had turkey curry made with last year's leftover turkey! It was delicious & no adverse effects

Wolfcub · 06/01/2023 14:47

Penultimate bastarding essay finished. House cleaned apart from bathroom. Trip to tip. Lidl £20. £6 mcd as I realised I hadn't eaten and was feeling wobbly. Distinct frugal fail there

Happierwithouthim · 06/01/2023 17:48

Called to see my tyre guy - I'll need 3 or possibly 4 tyres. Luckily ds spotted this chunk though could have caused a blowout.

Theskyoutsideisblue · 06/01/2023 18:51

@BigSkies2022 sorry don’t think so. X

kessiebird · 06/01/2023 18:57

Ah cars happier absolute pain but well done to your DS spotting it.

wolf my car finds itself outside a fast food place if I'm very hungry. Sounds a productive day though.

I've lost track of the thread but sorry to hear of the parent stresses. Not easy when they get older sometimes. My poor MIL sat in A&E for 7.5 hours last night as the doctor sent her there. She was given an option to stay in the chair all night under observation as they had no beds so she went home. FIL was asleep as he's in his 80s and she is 78. She's in a lot of pain due to cancer which she's survived for almost four years. Not the NHSs fault at all, it's just heartbreaking to hear of the pressure they are under. The same hospital is doing a brilliant job with my DM who has survived cancer now for five years. So I guess it depends on department pressures and what's happening on the day.

Spends £45 Aldi. £14.99 Highway Code and Theory Test practice book for DS. It's his birthday soon.

lifelongfrugaleer · 06/01/2023 19:13

Good save by ds there happier
£57 lidl which is very low for us,£60 skate pass for the month,£4 chipper for ds, .
£50 trainers but Christmas money,€11 eco shop for shampoo bars and yeast

marthasmum · 06/01/2023 19:56

Ah that’s sad about your MIL kessie awful for an older person to have to wait. And north it must be very tough when the burden is all on you.

WeightoftheWorld · 06/01/2023 19:57

Hi all, happy new year! Hope everyone had a good Christmas, I dropped off the thread not long before it really. Sooo much illness here! Me and DS were both unwell for basically the whole of December tbh, with DH and DD both being ill for some of that month too. All my friends and family have been ill loads the last month or so as well, it's been totally grim, is anyone else finding that?

Frugal-wise, I feel quite optimistic tbh, we are doing better than expected. Contacted an insurance broker local to us to arrange an appt to discuss life assurance. I did an online price comparison which made me realise we haven't a clue so we need to speak to someone who does. Not sure how we are going to arrange an appt with him though as will be extremely difficult to find time and also childcare for the kids, but so important I know.

We also really should open a savings account as we have a small-but-not-totally-insignificant amount of cash reserves atm and it's really not doing anything for us at all. Any suggestions on where to look for info about this?

Today was an NSD with the kids. Blagged free lunch at my generous DPs and then we went to the library afterwards. Was a bit tricky with DS as he was a bit noisy and even though he absolutely LOVES books at home, he hasn't been to the library in so long he couldn't remember it so he had no interest in looking at books, he just wanted to crawl around everywhere at the speed of light. The floor was filthy as well but he's too big and heavy to keep hold of all the time now (and he would tantrum if I tried), I hope he doesn't catch something from it bleurgh...also we have managed to book a slot at a local zero waste thing where they distribute food the supermarkets are going to bin. So DH going to collect it later, intruiged as to what will be in it and how much, hopefully if it's useful we can become regulars and save money on our food shop, the cost of which has absolutely rocketed.

TheSky Your degree sounds soo interesting! The comment about the 30 plus year relationship thing I think is interesting because in the past, didn't people often marry very young though? So if you got married at 16, 30 yrs marriage would only take you both to 46. Which of course life expectancy was lower but most people lived until later than that like for ages I think?

Wolf I've had a few of those food disasters before, like you very rarely but it's still so annoying isn't it?! I've been looking at foreign holidays too, DD asking to go on a plane, I think we probably could afford it in the strictest sense of the word, but it probably wouldn't be a sensible financial decision and who knows what the future holds. So I don't think it's doable really from a sensible point of view. Which is sad as she starts school in September so then we definitely won't be able to go abroad for the foreseeable due to the extra inflated costs on top Sad we do have a UK break booked for the early summer though that my DPs are generously paying the (expensive) accommodation cost for us.

Kessie Sorry to hear about your MIL. You may remember my DM who is also a cancer patient was recently in A&E for two whole days, the first 24 hrs without a room.

Sorry to everyone with parent stressors too Flowers

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 06/01/2023 22:37

Spends today 11 Morrisons
Sorry to hear about your poor Mil Kessie bless her Flowers
Wolf l hate it when that happens grr!
Weight so glad you are doing well Smile
I have been calculating our Electricity and gas bill for the next 12 months and think our bill will be about £3600 a year that is if it doesn't go up again in April fat chance !
lt is so difficult to do the calculation for gas , honestly it's nuts.

Gensola · 07/01/2023 09:04

happier nice nails (not the point I know 😁)
mrs I get very confused by energy prices and calculations. I remember a really helpful poster on here years ago called fluffy cloud land who used to explain it all!

Dry January starts today for us, hoping to go to the 17 March so we will see.

kessie sorry to hear about MIL, it is so worrying the state of the NHS just now.

DH had his heart tests and we are no further forward really - he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and will need to be on beta blockers for life but she’s also referred him for yet another scan, a CT with contrast to check for hardened arteries. HCM is enough to be dealing with in my opinion, he’s so worried.

lifelongfrugaleer · 07/01/2023 11:31

Gosh Gen that is a worry

frugal fail, let the chicken on the worktops above the dish washer so it’s now that lovely ambient germs temperature

Morning everyone. I'm just home from the hairdresser's. €78 but worth every cent.

I survived my first two days back at work. It was very tough getting up early again - felt like it was the middle of the night.

DD should be on this thread. She and her friends booked a week in Portugal for €340 each - that includes flights! It's a 3 star resort and some of them may end up sleeping on sofa beds but they don't care. They'd been talking about a holiday in England (maybe Manchester or Liverpool mixed in with a brief visit to London and a day in Paris via the Eurostar). But for some reason they changed their plans.

Having a quick cuppa and then I'll head to the supermarket.

I'm sorry that so many of you are dealing with elderly/ill parents. Big hugs all around.

Making a quick list of jobs for January

*Phone solicitor again

*Have one final attempt to unblock bathroom sink and if that fails, call a plumber

*Phone alarm company re: faulty alarm panel

*Check local SVDP charity shop and ask if they accept chocolates and biscuits. I got a lot of chocolates and a box of biscuits as Christmas presents, but there's only me and DD here and DD's not crazy about fancy chocolates. And we don't eat biscuits much. The charity shop doesn't sell/distribute food but they're linked to a major charity which I think makes up food parcels. So I'll pop my head in the door and ask them. If they do, great. If they don't, I might bring them into work next week.

BigSkies2022 · 07/01/2023 11:53

Hello all. Today is 'sunshine Saturday' apparently, when holiday bookings soar. Industry hoping for a bumper weekend after the disruptions of the last years. So, happy bargain hunting to those planning a getaway. The Guardian (online, free) runs lots of articles on budget travel - great ideas and links for rail travel (Interrail still free for under 11s - maybe a way of doing 'abroad' on a budget?) We still haven't booked our Eurotunnel - getting DH to focus on anything but work this first week back is not happening.

DMum being discharged today! will be picking her up this afternoon and taking her home to Ddad. All laundry done, ironed, put away, everything very clean, stand by your beds. Ddad said he would get told off for letting me do this, I told him he should simply take the credit and keep schtum!

Slight frugal fail last night, but pleasurable. Decided to bring Ddad back home for dinner, since Dmum was not being discharged after all. DS and DH decided that takeaway was in order as it was getting late. Secretly very pleased about this, but have insisted upon marking the event in the calendar to ensure we don't repeat at regular intervals! So today is the homemade chicken curry day. I will need to buy some rice, and maybe some mint and coriander.

Weight - moneysavingexpert is as good a place as any to search for good savings options. If you can lock it away for a bit, you can get rates of around 7%, I think, but that might involve opening a new bank account and linking it, not sure. Easy access brings the rate down to around 2.5%.

Happierwithouthim · 07/01/2023 12:07

Gen I've biab on with shellac over it, first time trying it left hand is still perfect three weeks later unfortunately only two nails left on my right hand, biab is supposed to be good for up to 6 months. My beautician is moving to a salon & couldn't redo them this week because her bf has Covid so I'm trying vitagel in a different salon on Thurs. €25

Got 4 tyres & walked dog while they were being done & guy was gone when I came back so I don't know how much approx €400 I guess.

I'm going to dechristmas & sort out my house today, going out for dinner later with bf.

needastrongoneagain · 07/01/2023 13:46

Lost track of the thread these last few days, been reading though but my ability to retain any information at all these days is not great!!

Been very frugal as I'm trying to do the NS January so apart from food and essentials, I've not spent anything much.

Still need to menu plan but I'm tired today as DH is home.

So sorry to hear about the tough situations re elderly relatives. I know it's DH, but I do relate. X

Happierwithouthim · 07/01/2023 15:25

Need tomorrow is another day.

I've cleaned the bathroom, done a small bit in the kitchen and dechristmassed the house & taken everything to the attic. I'm wiped so I'm mumsnetting before going for a shower and getting ready to go out for dinner.

lifelongfrugaleer · 07/01/2023 16:54

It will bide to tomorrow need
free pt session in the gym today ,£57 Sainsbury’s but will get some back from mil as her shopping too

OP posts:
Wolfcub · 07/01/2023 17:07

Agree Need, it'll wait. And you know what book you're using to plan so simplifies things. The paprika pasta looks good to me

Lazy day. Moved £1100 to credit card to pay off half the outstanding bit of kitchen works and vet bills. Seemed bonkers to pay interest on that and keep savings. Unfortunately I can't pay it all off as insurance renewal plus alarm cover is £1000 going out this month.

Finished book. Checked pension stuff and worked out what I'd need to save to meet the state pension gap and what I'd need to save for a year's expenses at current rates. Also worked out there's zero possibility of me taking a lump sum off my pension. Retiring at 60 is looking unmanageable but I am still going to set that as my goal.

Went to dump the very few Xmas empty bottles I had and filled car with petrol after checking round for cheapest rate and using my discount card

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 07/01/2023 17:13

Spent £100 on groceries in Tesco , l did get a lot tbf. I look fir the Aldi price match items and the clubcard offers of course. Anything yellow stickered too 😊
Their toilet rolls are extortionate, l refused to pay it and we called into Aldis and bought 8 packs in there cost me £16 . It works out so much cheaper.
Well done on the deChristmasing Happier
👏👏
I have done the same this morning. Also emptied the fridges of all the out of date or half eaten food and given them a good clean ready for the shopping this afternoon . Remind me not to get so many dips next year lol .
Need thank you sweetheart, sending you a huge hug 💐

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 07/01/2023 17:26
