mrs curls we have just started this for Christmas 2023, with travel to NI it’s always such a big hit for us financially. We have decided to set up a Monzo pot and save £100 a month to take the edge off it all. Just need to not dip into it in the meantime 🤪
We also use Monzo pots for car insurance and MOT and other sinking funds as well as monthly budgeting (we have pots for food, petrol etc) and for any special occasions so we will set aside money if we are going out for dinner etc.
DH found out he has an old insurance policy with a lump sum that went defunct ages ago in the early 2000s so he calling up tomorrow to see if he can cash it in - if so we will be able to clear our credit cards completely and start 2023 with only the IVF loans left to pay. I can hardly dare hope!
My student loan will also be paid off this year which will mean a bit more money in my pay packet once that actually happens.

needastrongoneagain · 27/12/2022 17:11

I'm definitely doing the pots of money idea for 2023. Used to do it all the time when the DC were small and we were absolutely skint, it was the only way we could manage a whole years liabilities without going overdrawn. Then we got a bit more money in the bank and stopped.

Hope your DS works things out kessie.

£3 coffees.

Soups made, I'm on the sofa chilling, perusing my new recipe books. Heaven.

Made vegetable hash last night for tea using up the Christmas vegetable leftovers, a leek, red onion, two large potatoes, strong cheese from the cheese board and some fresh coriander, served with a fried egg each. Great frugal use of stuff that needed using. Kids loved it!

Ordered a large Ocado shop of staples for tomorrow to minimise spending in January. I've let everything run down re store cupboards.

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/12/2022 18:00

Oooo what books did you get need?

i made turkey soup so that’s done now along with veg
ham reserve for carbonara
beef and piggies- dunno yet but frozen
roas potatoes will be sent to in-laws who don’t make them anymore as mil won’t use her oven

northender · 27/12/2022 18:57

Turkey & veg soup done. Added a touch too much spice to the fajitas at lunchtime but still good. That hash sounds lovely need I did bubble & squeak yesterday with pretty much a bit of everything from Christmas dinner, it was so tasty

needastrongoneagain · 27/12/2022 18:58

I'm in heaven! Had to literally screen shot and send to the DC, but Meat Free Mowgli (Nisha Katona), Fresh India (Meera Sodha) and (my favourite), One Pot, Pan, Planet (super frugal and all about sustainability). Cooking is my therapy along with running. I've far too many recipe books already!

needastrongoneagain · 27/12/2022 19:01

Love bubble and squeak North. I know you enjoy cooking too. Never too much spice!

Gensola · 27/12/2022 21:01

need one pot one pan is my favourite cookbook of all time! 🤩

northender · 27/12/2022 21:30

Ooh I'll have a look at one pot pan. Mowgli opened recently here but we haven't been yet. Love your leftovers by Hugh F-W is my favourite at the moment. I got it a couple of years ago & love it. Cooking is my therapy too need

SortinMyMH · 27/12/2022 21:33

Have managed to do over £70 in groceries today. I don't even know how. Picnic stuff for tomorrow and drinks, i did get xmas lights as mine blew. And were reduced to £9
And needed cleaning and laundry stuff.

Tomorrow were at an attraction for the day. Taking picnic but likely get kfc on way home.

January i have 2 dcs birthdays , 1 of which is nearly done. Other probably cash.
Ballons, banners etc.

Ive just said to dh and eldest im not buying all the sweet treats daily! As was getting a nice pudding /evening treat every day, apple pies, choc cakes, cream cakes etc. Prob £3 to £5a day on stuff like that.
We just cant do it anymore.

Dh loves a sweet treat in the evenings but he can make do with custard creams etc.

I also had a huge clear out today.

Only things needed which is no mega rush. Dh socks and boxers as his have seen bettet days but not urgent can prob wait till after birthday expenses.

marthasmum · 27/12/2022 23:54

I save £200 per month for Xmas and other treats - I reckon to spend £1400 on Xmas though it was more this year with food. But as o said, all budgeted for this year except for the food, which was a good feeling.
fingers crossed you get the money gen!
a bit topsy turkey today as I had to go back to A and E with DF last night, and they kept him in for IV abx and fluids. So DM is still with us. Had to stay all night until he was sorted so not much sleep. Which was crap but he got the treatment he needed, and thank god he was then on the mend and I didn’t have to keep it up. Thinking of you need I can’t imagine how tonight it’s been with all the hospital visits.
mrs how lovely to donate all the stuff. I’ve started a new year’s donation to a local charity that provides beds for kids who don’t have them.
bedtime for me now!

BigSkies2022 · 28/12/2022 00:10

Pasta and chickpea soup tonight using some of the ham stock.Felt very nice to have a simple meal after the grand feasting. Slightly marred the effect with several Bendick bittermints afterwards, but no-one's perfect.

ememem84 · 28/12/2022 02:55

Yes mil is being very different this time. We were all stressed last time. Everyone has mellowed/grown up!

@Decafflatteplease yes. Well 7 weeks. Back to work/school on 30 January. It took a lot of planning.

DH has been with his firm for 12 years. And after 10 he was entitled to a 3 month fully paid sabbatical. (Very lucky). We had planned to do this trip in 2020 and extend my maternity leave…(dd was born summer 2019). But pandemic….

I’ve taken a combination of both annual and unpaid leave from this year and next year (so have 8 days left next year I think to take). I might have to take a bit more unpaid (or work a few extra hours to build up time in lieu)

DH has taken 6 weeks of his sabbatical now and then will take the remainder for the school summer holidays. That was the compromise.

dd is only 3. So legally doesn’t have to be at school yet. So although she has a place at a school nursery it doesn’t matter so much.

because ds was 5 in September - annoyingly - we had to apply for permission to take him out. We’re missing 18 days of school. They authorised 9. His teachers have all said have an amazing time and a great adventure. We have his phonics and reading books with us so he can keep up (although haven’t done anything yet).

but he’s reception and it’s unlikely to affect his GCSEs or steer prospects. We made no promises of him getting an education out here but he is learning things. I’ve been encouraging him to help at the shop count things etc.

it’s also not a trip we will be able to do again probably. For this long anyway. We’ll come back because of the family connection but stick to school holidays (Easter and Christmas). Coming in our summer hols will be winter here! Ick.

we’re in Auckland now. Plans this week are to visit the museum to get our Māori culture on and see the T rex skeletons. Go to the sea life museum (to see sharks!) and to the zoo (the kids want to see kiwi birds and they have them there so they’re guaranteed a viewing).

lifelongfrugaleer · 28/12/2022 06:19

Ah he will be learning loads em

I shall look into that book. I love cooking and baking but it gets pushed down the priority list sadly

sorry df was unwell again but pleased he got treated

im back to work today and have a gummy eye- excellent for looking at a screen

can you do the old school bake on a Sunday while the oven is on sorting? Then sweet treats while they last

needastrongoneagain · 28/12/2022 08:40

Love HFW North, but haven't got that particular book. I used Much More Veg religiously at one point, must dig it out again actually. It's useful if you have a veg box.

Probably healthier and cheaper to not have daily treats sortin, win win!

Your poor DF Martha, at least he's on the mend now. It's not easy mentally or physically re DH, not going to lie!

It seems I found a hidden gem with the One Pot book then!

Boo gunky eye life!

Managed to sleep in until 7.45!!!! Unheard of for me. Probably because I was so chilled before getting to bed and really needed it.

Downstairs getting tidied up today. Not sure with spends, but if I pop to Lidl I'll deduct it from the Ocado shop.

lifelongfrugaleer · 28/12/2022 09:20

I’ve reserved the one pot book at the library #frugal

Need my df called me for breakfast at 10:30 and woke me, I wake at 6 religiously, I was in bed and asleep by 10pm last night!

northender · 28/12/2022 22:11

No spend day today.
Leftover Christmas soup frozen
DH used his leftover turkey curry kit for tea tonight (yum). 2 portions left over now frozen & all turkey used up.
We're all off to dh's parents in Devon tomorrow in 2 cars as ds will be going back to Somerset from there rather than here. Ds & I are leaving later so will eat from the fridge before we go. Operation nofoodwastefromChristmas!
Will do a freezer & kitchen audit tomorrow so I can start some January meal planning
Have managed to get my next book group book free on Borrowbox
May look for some nice PJ bottoms in the sales. Nothing else I need though.

CurlsandCurves · 28/12/2022 22:19

I'm another one sleeping in this week, and having an afternoon nap. It’s wonderful!

Went to Denby with my mum today and spent my Christmas money on a lovely new dinner set. I chose a range called Natural Canvas. Got 12 place settings for plates and side plates, 6 each of cereal and pasta bowls. And received a money off voucher for January so might top up at some point. The really good thing was they took my email address and made a note on my account of the range I bought. So if/when the range gets discontinued, I get an email giving me 12 months notice to get anything I still want. Thought that was pretty cool.

Fatclub tomorrow. Dread to think what I’ve gained this week!

BigSkies2022 · 28/12/2022 22:33

mmm...Devon, north. Well jell. Whereabouts? Have a lovely time.

Last of potatoes and swede used today in a root veg dauphinoise. Still eating ham with everything. Will need to buy bread and mousetrap cheddar for macaroni cheese, but that aside, just keep on eating the cupboards and fridge.

lifelongfrugaleer · 29/12/2022 06:22

Frugal fail on the Christmas puddings going to waste as mil brought extras and o one is eating them. My pud for next year is smaller, must freeze it,

have fun in Devon north

that is good curls

OP posts:
needastrongoneagain · 29/12/2022 08:20

Christmas puds keep forever though life, think the one we had this year (the only thing that went to waste as only DH likes them) was a couple of years out of date.

Seems like loads of frugal friends needed serious sleep and rest in the last few days. I'm in bed with a cuppa but will be up soon as I want to give upstairs a really good clean.

Have a super time in Devon north.

The Denby dinner set sounds lovely Curls. Denby never really looks dated, which is why I love it.

Had a lovely run and chat with a friend last night, glad I made the effort. It felt normal.

Spends yesterday
£28 Lidl - stocked up on pulses, grains, cleaning items for January.
£2 coffee for DH.
£100 Ocado (but got two vegan nut roasts half price to freeze, and a bottle of Baileys that had £7 off for DM's birthday, some wine for NYE - in case of visitors). Few cooking items for January too.

Saved quite a lot pooping to Lidl. Few examples - tins of items like chickpeas were 42p - cheapest 70p Ocado. Malt Loaf - 72p at Lidl, £1.50 at Ocado. £2 difference for a large packet of rice. Lidl cleaning products way cheaper.. terrible really.

Socathe · 29/12/2022 08:43

I've been almost completely AWOL over Christmas, I have been reading but feel like I've barely found the time to reply or keep track of spends! Hope everybody's had a lovely Christmas, sorry to those who have had any family issues/illness etc and hope it all improves soon. I was back to work yesterday but worked from home and now off again until next week.

I'm feeling quite motivated this week to set some financial goals for next year and think of strategies to achieve them. I'll have a think in more detail but off the top of my head I'd like to build up some savings (with house renovations we've pretty much been pretty much living month to month and our wages have only recently increased/childcare decreased so haven't really been in a position to save until now, even just a tiny emergency fund by the end of 2023 would be good). I'd like to save to afford to replace our breaking/damaged downstairs flooring (will aim to tile it all with my dad so hopefully just costs of the materials - we actually already have a good chunk of money saved towards this) and I'd like to save to start on the downstairs toilet when DS starts school in September (I'll have some free time then hopefully to get it done, it's the only room we haven't touched). Anyone else feeling motivated for some financial things next year?

Today £68 on Aldi click and collect. We're meeting my DB and his wife for a pub lunch so spends there too. That should be our last Christmas social spend before the new year.
