Hope you have a fab time em I’m sure it will be worth it!
I know what you mean big I am starting to stress a bit. Feel like I want to gear down from work when actually I have to gear up and sort hosting Xmas! Need to do a big food shop and start some prepping, I don’t think there’s actually loads to do but the thought of it is worse!

ememem84 · 13/12/2022 22:05

In London. One flight down. Another 2 to go.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 13/12/2022 22:13

Big & Martha it will all get done eventually don't worry 💐
Em it's so exciting for you all ☺️👏

Alfiemoon1 · 13/12/2022 22:48

Have a great time em

WeightoftheWorld · 13/12/2022 23:13

Quick one, did read back but brain is mush but hope you have an amazing time Em and that the journey isn't too painful!

Spends today £2 bus fare to work and £2 back home again. Was hoping to catch a lift home from DH but he didn't finish in time boo. Tomorrow will be the same bus fare spends but hopefully that's it. Got my expenses cheque in the post today from job 1 too so that's good. Payslip for job 3 was slightly wrong but queried with HR and they're sorting it in time for this month's pay run thankfully.

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/12/2022 07:07

Do you need it blue, really need those little things. Priority list needed there
and here tbf

Is your heating fixed adora?

ooo em will be in the air…..

I'm trying really hard not to spend but it's not working! The majority is presents for DD, and in my defence I've been putting money away since May to cover Christmas, so been using that.
But we're off to the IOW next week (family holiday) so will be paying for a shop to get us through until Boxing Day. We're buying the alcohol, but have got £115 in nectar points to cover that so shouldn't be too bad. Not intending to spend ALL of it on alcohol!
After Christmas things will settle down. They have to - having just retired my income has drastically decreased!

kessiebird · 14/12/2022 14:54

It's just that spendy time!
No matter what I always get finished for Christmas but I hate these weeks where work is still busy and I'd rather do Christmas. Was harder still when DC were in primary with various plays, fairs, parties etc...

DH rang to say his car needs a repair - that's gone to the garage. Could be a loose wire👍 could be a new alternator 😩

Emergency plumber coming on Saturday to look at the drippy pipe in the ceiling. The ceiling has a small hole from DH poking so I'm hoping he's going to fix it. Plus a boiler service and a new diverter valve 😩 better than the boiler going off altogether...

£23 Home Bargains
£14.98 Lidl
£7 Iceland

Got some Friends pocket tissues for 99p at Home Bargains. I thought a great stocking filler.

Returned some boots to Sports Direct but got a credit note for £34.99. Sure it will be spent.

DH and I have said we are going to be v frugal next year and build up a better emergency fund. Watch this space 😂

kessiebird · 14/12/2022 15:11

Car is only £120 👍 relief!

@TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans reading back. Nothing exciting, I made a meatball, cheese and pickle wrap from random things in the fridge and freezer which I ate at 10.45am so had to call at Morrisons for a meal deal! So two lunches 😂

marthasmum · 14/12/2022 21:07

Unexpected spends today but for a good reason. DD passed her driving test first time, no minor faults!! I am so proud of her. £485 to insure her til end of a March. That’s with the current insurers who had her on her provisional licence. Tbh I didn’t shop around a) because I’ve got so little time and b) because in March I will be able to look for new quote apparently with a years no claims. Which I wouldn’t if I looked for a new insurer now.

something I hadn’t realised though. Part of the reason for DD buying her car (from my DParents) was that I thought it would do all 3 of them as a starter car to practice on. But I’ve realised that when DS1 is 17 next April, I won’t be able to insure him and DD on the same car. I’ll try other insurers but I bet they’ll reject it as too much risk. And I can’t insure them on my car as it’s too big (7 seater).

Timetoswitch · 14/12/2022 21:32

Well done to your DD martha 🎉

hope the flights are going ok em 🤞

phew kessie on the small bill

lifelongfrugaleer · 15/12/2022 05:58

Had bloods done and am low on iron, Vit D and Zinc. Thyroid Triiodthyronine T3 is also very low, right at the bottom of the scale of “normal” but they won’t treat as it is still technically normal - it’s 1.3. Don’t know if anyone has any experience?

Happierwithouthim · 15/12/2022 10:44

gen no experience but this probably explains a lot to you anyway, are you very tired?

Lots of spends at the moment but I save for Christmas through work so it is budgeted for.

em happy holidays

Socathe · 15/12/2022 11:07

Morning all, I've been keeping up with the thread just about but busy with work etc so haven't been replying. There have been lots of Christmas spends here, we save throughout the year but there always seem to be bits that come up which aren't really planned for. Spent about £100 in Tesco over the last week somehow, secret Santa presents, a few boxes of nice chocolates for some distant family who I always forget to budget for, chocolates for DS' nursery staff, wrapping paper as I didn't have any left from last year, it all adds up! We're doing okay though and today is payday so yippee. If we can get through to the next January payday in budget I'll be very pleased. Christmas presents are all done now so it's just a few outings, we're visiting Santa next week which is already paid for but might grab fish and chips on the way home as it's late for DS' dinner. Then the next day we have the pantomime which again is already paid for but deciding whether or not to push the boat out and go for dinner after, it's the afternoon show so again trying to get home to cook after will be very late dinner for DS. So would be nice to go somewhere, I do have a few Clubcard vouchers so maybe a discounted pizza express.

DH has said he'd like to host his family for a buffet between Christmas and new year, I've added a load of party food to our Aldi click and collect for next week and it has come to £50 which I think for 15 people is quite good. But again another unexpected expense as we hadn't planned to do it. It will be nice though and they are hosting us for various get togethers over the next couple of weeks.

We were meant to have DS' swimming lesson this morning but got in the car to find the handbrake is stuck on so we couldn't go. Made waffles to cheer DS up as he was very disappointed. Used my work breakdown cover which I've never used before, called at 9.30 and they were here by 10.30! Looked at the car and said it needs to go to the garage so they've towed it to the local garage who hope to squeeze it in today or tomorrow. An inconvenience but very impressed with the service, frugal win as I was looking at calling out a local mechanic before I remembered the breakdown cover. Fingers crossed it's not an expensive fix.

Visiting my parents this weekend to exchange Christmas presents etc, should be lovely, think we're doing something Christmassy one day and it should be a low spend weekend for us apart from fuel there and back. Then a little Christmas party at DH's SIL when we're home on Sunday afternoon.

WeightoftheWorld · 15/12/2022 14:54

Well done Martha to your DD! That's amazing, no minor faults too! I failed my test twice and then cancelled my third attempt because I was too anxious. Spent a MASSIVE amount of money on lessons and nothing to show for it, makes me feel sick thinking about it tbh. I was always worried from the beginning of learning that would happen. I think if it hadn't have been for covid maybe i would have passed ok but the stop-start of lessons all the time just made everything much worse for me.

Socathe Sounds like you've got loads of lovely Christmas things planned Smile

Gen I had bloods recently too and have low iron. It's not a surprise though as I went back on the COC pill over three months ago and have bled for almost all the time since. The GP just told me to buy some supplements OTC which is a bit annoying as I've got a prescription pre-payment certificate so obviously would have much rather have had it prescribed but felt too embarrassed to ask. Hoping to go the pharmacy on Monday to buy myself some, and hoping my eczema cream prescription will be sorted by then too to collect as well without waiting ages for it. I've got awful eczema on my hands and fingers atm, so painful. Regarding the figure that is at the bottom range of normal, the GPs have guidelines to follow, I can't see a situation where they'd take action if it's within the normal range? Sometimes even if some values come back actually outside of the normal range, they still don't take action, depending on what it is. One of my other bloods came back like 0.1 below the lowest value but they still said they didn't need to be concerned or do anything about it. Because it was so close to the normal range and in isolation with no other related worrying bloods it wasn't a concern. The ranges themselves account for I think something like 95% of patients I think my DH said? So some people will have values outside of the ranges that are actually still completely normal for them as well.

Today possibly NSD but really I should do some online food shopping. I got interrupted last time I was doing an order, I hope the stuff has stayed in me basket. Might try and do that this evening once kids in bed so I know I won't get interrupted again, we need quite a lot of stuff now. So that will be quite spendy as everything is so expensive now! We usually go to playgroup on Thursday mornings but we didn't go because there's still loads of ice in places and I struggle so much to walk on it and worry about me falling and tipping the pram over or DD falling. It's very cold still today but the sun was out earlier so I'm hoping perhaps it may have melted it and we might be able to go tomorrow morning instead. We'll see. DF has taken DD to the shops as he's not phased by the ice at all and can keep hold of her hand anyway, he's getting a few bits of shopping for us so that's a kind frugal win.

lifelongfrugaleer · 15/12/2022 17:03

I took some cargo pants back to primark but none left for dd -20 then spent it again on joggers and hot water bottle
$16 back in new look as they completely over charged me. $12 B&M

have canceled my Saturday shop and won’t make Aldi tonight so save that shop until Monday

£275 for the car. New break cables and cylinders. It is at that age where it will start costing us.

BigSkies2022 · 15/12/2022 19:31

Congratulations to your daughter, marthai I hope she enjoys her new status as a driver.
Weight - I failed my driving test first time, felt very guilty as my parents had paid for it. 10 years later, I had to pass the test in order to be able to make my new job and home work. So I booked a bunch of lessons and got myself into shape over a short and intensive period of practice before the test - which worked. Would a focused period be possible for you?

A long day today - took DM to hearing test, followed by shopping trip. She managed to buy some things today, which was good, and we are an important step closer to getting her hearing aids. But it is exhausting going at a snail's pace! I am knackered, and realise we must only attempt one thing per outing.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 15/12/2022 20:27

Well done on the payslips Weight ☺️
Life excellent work with the returns well done 👏
Dexter l found since l retired l don't spend half as much on what l call fripperies . I'm sure you will find it is the same for you, try not to worry ☺️
Kessie fingers crossed the car doesn't cost a lot lovely & the ceiling and pipe and boiler are sorted 🤞
Just read your next message and saw the car was 120 thank God 👏
That wrap sounded delicious lol at 2 lunches 😋
Martha that is wonderful news Congratulations to your darling daughter 👏👏
Gen yes l suffer from hypothyroidism and they treat me with Levothyroxine . I have to have levels done every 6 months to check if l am on the correct dose because the levels can vary . You may find you have a higher level if they test you again . Glad you have been tested and can get the correct treatment sweetheart 💐
Happier great idea to save through work over the year 👏
Em so glad you have landed safely ☺️
Socathe sorry you had to pay so much it's as you say they age and need work 💐
Bigskies well done on taking your Mum today it is exhausting l get you 💐
Hope everyone is ok 😊
Nsd for me yay!

Alfiemoon1 · 15/12/2022 21:23

Em glad you had a safe trip
congratulations to your dd Martha ds is having lessons and it’s costing me a fortune be worth it in the long run when i don’t have to pick him up from work late at night

nsd and thankfully dh gets paid tomorrow as there is not a lot left in the bank account but I didn’t have to dip into our savings and I only have his Christmas present to buy plus he gets his Christmas bonus which they usually pay earlier but held out as they were threatening strike action and he gets back pay to august from his pay rise so that can go into the savings account before I spend it as it’s so tempting this time of year with all the special offers

its so cold here at the moment-9 last night although someone said it went to -12 been trying different things with the heating and it’s coming out about £12 per day each time which is horrendous it’s not as if I live in a mansion or have the house boiling hot no idea if this is now normal usage or not
going to turn the boiler and hot water temperature down and bleed the radiators at the weekend and insulate the new porch ceiling as that’s still work in progress as is downstairs but the thermostat is upstairs on the landing which is warmer anyway so the heating should only click on when it gets cold upstairs. Roll on spring lol

Timetoswitch · 16/12/2022 08:49

Finally feeling a bit better. One of my DDs are not well though, high temperature but still negative (she refuses to swab the throat though). I’m tired today though, as I got up in the night to check on DD and then didn’t sleep well.

Looking forward to the rest of the family finishing later today for Christmas. I might get out of my pjs to celebrate 😁

Now need to get my head back into getting things ready for Christmas 🎄

Happierwithouthim · 16/12/2022 11:00
