I can’t believe that butter now has a security tag. The price is eye watering

It’s half butter half own brand flora. Buy a block in foil and be done. Graham’s block butter is decent

Ted27 · 20/10/2022 03:47

thats a 750g tub. A standard block of butter is 250g, which are between £2 and £2.75 in my local co-op depending on brand.
yes thats still gone up a lot but maybe puts the 7.50 price tag into perspective

GoodShipLollipopBop · 20/10/2022 03:51

That's not even 100% butter. It's got crap fillers in it. Go buy a block of 250g real salted butter from M&S. It's only £1.75

xogossipgirlxo · 20/10/2022 13:22

How many of these posts, everyone already knows Lurpak has security tag on. You can get real butter for 2 quid.

AdoraBell · 20/10/2022 13:26

I saw Lurpack butter in M&S today, I’m fairly sure it was less than £2. Do you normally buy that spread or butter?

I didn't know about the security tags! How utterly bizarre! Never seen one around here

I haven't seen any in shops too, but it's been all over social media when COL started. Also, on blocks of cheese.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/10/2022 13:44

I can't believe that you think that shit is butter. Can you see what I did there?

When I'm in charge I hear there's a vacancy I will ban the use of the word 'butter' to describe anything except actual pure butter as such.

MacarenaMacarena · 31/10/2022 10:00

If you're interested, you can make your own butter just by whisking double cream beyond the thick stage - 2 minutes later it becomes butter and buttercream. 400ml double cream makes 200mg of butter. Put the leftover buttercream liquid into soups, smoothies or porridge. Cheaper than shop butter and nicer!

GasPanic · 31/10/2022 10:11

I've started using mayo on sandwiches.

It spreads better so you use less of it, so probably more healthy than butter when you want something to take the dryness out the sandwich.

Still like a bit of butter on toast though.

Zippedydoo123 · 01/11/2022 06:49

I stopped buying butter spreads years ago. How can people afford it, it is also very unhealthy.

KangarooKenny · 01/11/2022 06:51

I’ve seen meat tagged before, so not unusual when it’s that price.

PartysOver · 01/11/2022 07:08

You don’t need butter. Animal products should all be priced highly.

Teeshirt · 01/11/2022 07:11

That’s not butter, though.

Thanks- definitely giving that a go!

Hopperhead · 01/11/2022 07:27

I can't believe the butter snobbery on this thread!
Plenty of people don't get through butter quickly enough to warrant leaving a block or part of a block to warm up on the counter so it can be spread. I for one like the coolness of spreadable butter as opposed to the warm greasiness of softened block butter. Spreadable butter still tastes a heck of a lot better than margarine.
In fairness, Lurpak was always expensive and this is a huge tub. It has gone up though. Look at the price per kg to make sure you're getting the best value by size.

How so? You just put as much or little as you like out in a butter dish or other suitable container and it lives there permanently. Unless it's there for weeks, it won't go off unless it's really warm weather.

Ours varies between the whole block in winter when we're both at home and will probably use it in a week or two to about a quarter or less of it in the summer when it goes a bit soft and might actually go rancid in less than a week and also DP works away a lot so it's just me using it.

0o0o0 · 01/11/2022 07:54

I started making my own from a pot of whipping cream. Takes about 15-20 mins 😀

Where are you buying your cream and for how much?

I've made butter loads of times but it's only cheaper and therefore worth doing of you can get the cream reduced.

MacarenaMacarena · 02/11/2022 10:02

I bought mine from aldi or lidl, but I agree if you want to save money you have to find a good value source otherwise you are doing it for fun rather than economy.
I'd certainly also pick some up for making butter if I saw it reduced!

BlackForestCake · 08/11/2022 18:53

Even the cheapest unsalted butter in Morrisons and the Co-op is over 2.10 now.

MattDamon · 09/11/2022 07:19

I was going to buy a Grinch reusable bag at Tesco for a treat and it had a security tag on it! Only cost a £1!.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/11/2022 07:34

Sainsbury's butter is £1.99. I put some of the block in a butter dish so it stays spreadable and use it soaringke. I keep the rest in the fridge. I have never seen spread with a security tag. Did you take the photo yourself OP or us it an Internet meme?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/11/2022 07:58

Butter is NOT unhealthy - you may find it undesirable because it's an animal product but it is definitely not unhealthy compared to other fats people spread on their toast

It is closest to a natural product so therefore the healthiest (I too have whipped cream to get it when I've picked up cheap cream)

Snnowflake · 09/11/2022 08:06

The bad thing about butter is when it comes in a plastic tub.
I think imv that a foil paper is better environmentally and kelp butter in a small covered dish by the window where it’s cool.
