How many kWh of electric and gas do you use each day?

or just electric if no gas supply.

I know it varies wildly, dependent on many factors.

but we are a family of four, 2 adults, two dc and one small dog - I don't think the dog makes much of a difference 😅

we have gas boiler for hot water and central heating. Shower is not electric, but from taps using hot water from boiler. Electric oven!

we tend to have at least one person at home most of the time.

we generate a lot of laundry and I do use a dryer, I air dry a lot but use dryer for pants and socks. Always hoovering etc as we have two messy kids and dog!

we have not had the heating on yet - not even sure it works as had probs with it last year.

anyway, we average between 8-13kwh a day electric, often dependent on tumble dryer use and other factors. This is us being cautious, it was likely much more a day prior to smart meter installation.

gas varies a lot - and this is with no heating. sometimes it's 7kwh a day but the highest has been 16.8kwh a day, this is just from water hot water alone!

apologies for the boring post but I am curious to know what similar size families use?

@AlwaysLatte we only charge it about once a week, and we have a cheap night tariff so it's only about £2. Definitely cheaper than when we had an ICE, but we only drive 6000 miles a year.

mondaytosunday · 19/10/2022 13:38

A use 5kw in electric and any where from 2-25 gas as I have a gas fire. I use a dryer (three loads a week). Not had the heating on yet. This is from this month.

CaronPoivre · 19/10/2022 13:40

No idea. Aga must use a few though.

Rover83 · 19/10/2022 13:56

2 adults 3 kids (7yrs, 5yrs and 23mo)

Gas average this month so far is 10.9kwh. We use between 6-12kwh of gas, I think it must be higher the days the kids bath as we haven't had our heating on and its an electrc oven. I've turned the hot water temp down and only have it on for an hour in the morning and 2 hours in the evening.

Electric average this month so far is 7.1kwh per day I am doing my best to cut down on the dryer as much as possible.

Hit 5 Pounds today for the first time with unit charge and 2 short washes and 2 short tumble loads plus all the usual. I know we are getting the help but still 30 x 5 Pounds for a month looks scary. Don't wash or tumble every day of course. Usually use about 7 kWhs a day. 2 of us in a 3 bed detached house.

WahineToa · 20/10/2022 06:30

I don’t know why ours is still so high, average electric 16kwh a day! I’m not using the tumble dryer much anymore, not at all for over a week, we’ve cut the dishwasher by two cycles a week. It hasn’t changed. 3 adults in the house. We got one of those gadgets to tell us how much everything uses so we’ll be checking the rest today but our dehumidifier costs next to nothing.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/10/2022 06:39

On average this month 10.8 electricity, 2.5 gas. 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 children. Gas hob, and gas for hot water including showers. Gas heating but not had it on yet this year (using plug in electric heater when needed)

megletthesecond · 20/10/2022 06:42

Small, terraced 3 bed. Me and two teens.
Electric approx 10kwh a day.
Gas 3kwh a day, heating is on 19° 24/7.

The fan oven and electric shower do the most damage to usage.

Jellybeants · 03/12/2022 07:26

I've just worked mine out because it seemed like I was being way overcharged. According to the unit rates, I'm using 56kw of gas a day?! I'm in a 2 bed flat, just me and my 8 year old son and I dont have the heating on until the evening time

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2022 07:31

Something very wrong there Jelly
How long has this been going on? Do you have a smart meter?

We have our heating on in parts of the house for 3 hours a day and currently use 6 kWh a day, including water on for 2 hours first thing.

6 kwh? Gas heating for two hours used one metric unit here (I think it was only actually on for the first hour), so 11kwh. We used 28 units in November, ~300kwh. 6kwh seems incredibly low with heating on.

Athenen0ctua · 03/12/2022 07:55

@Jellybeants I agree that 56kwh seems too high though.

Heatherbell1978 · 03/12/2022 09:12

2 adults 2 DC. 4 bed detached house. Elec varies between 10 and 20 kW a day. Main things that boost it up are charging our car (which takes it way above 20) and if we put heaters on in the garden office - we wfh do at the moment we need to do this.
Gas around 50kw. We're in Scotland so the heating is on.

It’s 3 radiators out of the 16 in the house.

Do you have the thermostat in one of the warm room so it reaches temperature and clicks off in about 15 minutes or something?

Ignore me 🤣 just realised I’ve quoted the units per day!

Jellybeants · 03/12/2022 10:54

Yeah I thought there might be something wrong too. Its literally been like that since the price hikes in October. I'm with SSE and for the first 2 months since the rise, my smart meter was completely awol. It said I had no electric supply so I topped it up, 10 mins later my gas went out! But the smart meter was saying over £800 in credit (obv I wasn't that much in credit in reality!). I used over £4 of gas last night from when I went to bed at 11pm to when I woke up at 7am...no water used and thermostat was on low so rads weren't on constantly 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've tried contacting SSE several times with no luck, have sent emails, called them up, used the webchat...everything! They have literally no customer service at all

That's what I was wondering, while trying not to seem like I was interrogating you. Though, if you'd worked out how to bring your usage down that low then I would have wanted to find out how!
