How many kWh of electric and gas do you use each day?

or just electric if no gas supply.

I know it varies wildly, dependent on many factors.

but we are a family of four, 2 adults, two dc and one small dog - I don't think the dog makes much of a difference 😅

we have gas boiler for hot water and central heating. Shower is not electric, but from taps using hot water from boiler. Electric oven!

we tend to have at least one person at home most of the time.

we generate a lot of laundry and I do use a dryer, I air dry a lot but use dryer for pants and socks. Always hoovering etc as we have two messy kids and dog!

we have not had the heating on yet - not even sure it works as had probs with it last year.

anyway, we average between 8-13kwh a day electric, often dependent on tumble dryer use and other factors. This is us being cautious, it was likely much more a day prior to smart meter installation.

gas varies a lot - and this is with no heating. sometimes it's 7kwh a day but the highest has been 16.8kwh a day, this is just from water hot water alone!

apologies for the boring post but I am curious to know what similar size families use?

2 adults 2 children
Gas water/central heating
4-5kw electric a day
5kw gas a day

Got it down from 15kw electric and 15kw gas daily

No heating yet

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 18/10/2022 16:30

Family of 5 plus dog. Heating not on yet. 8 units/day of elec so far, which is a bit depressing as I think we are pretty frugal.

AlwaysLatte · 18/10/2022 16:32

Family of 4 plus dog. No gas (oil fired central heating/hot water which cost an eye watering £2.5k to refill last month). Not sure on kWh usage but electric is costing £10-£11 a day. We're home all day so constant use. Big drivers are electric car, external building which is heated by air source heat pump, oven or induction hob on at least 3x a day, washing machine x2 per day (hardly ever use the dryer), dishwasher x2 per day (both more if Eg we wash pet bedding or have people for dinner). Multiple devices, electric gates which are opening and closing all the time (we seem to be a taxi service at the moment!). We have a problem with two external lights which won't switch off so we're looking at replacements. I'm still surprised at the usage though. We're trying to keep the oil down - at the moment it's mild enough for the log burner only so always one toast room and we get lots of free wood.

MintJulia · 18/10/2022 16:41

One adult, one teen who's not too fussed about washing yet, in a detached house.

electric 5.5kwh per day in Sept
gas 3kwh per day in Sept

I don't have a tumble drier or a dog 🙂

Hugasauras · 18/10/2022 16:42

About 13 units of electricity a day but we aren't frugal with that.

Gas is too variable to say day by day really as it depends on heating.

TheGhostOfLiz · 18/10/2022 16:45

Not a dissimilar set up to you but with 3 adults and 0 kids

About 12kwh per day on elec
About 25kwh per day in gas, but that's averaged out over the year when, in reality, most is used in winter.

Though, come April it'll have to be a lot bloody less! Smile

Singleandproud · 18/10/2022 16:57

1 adult and 1 teen
Electric oven, shower, dishwasher, washing machine.
Gas heating isn't on yet and only use 1 bowl of hot water a day to keep the boiler ticking over.

5-8KwH electricity
1 Kwh gas

CandyFloss35 · 18/10/2022 17:28

Family of 5, 1.5kw of electricity and 12KW of gas.
We cook with gas, all showers, hot water and heating gas.
Electric I do 2 wash loads on a weekday, 3 or 4 on sat and sun, run the dishwasher once a day, tumble has started to be used again in the last few weeks and kids have TV and Xbox etc on in the rooms constantly. We do have solar panels tho so that obviously helps a lot with electricity costs.

Feelinglikeachange22 · 18/10/2022 17:30

4kw in the summer. More in winter.

User46374636373 · 18/10/2022 17:43

Thanks all! I think my usage would reduce dramatically if I cut out the dryer but it seemed impossible to dry stuff when it's wet and windy - which it often is here!! I rely on it too much 😭 I do air dry a lot too!

Four adults working from home. Two adults are gamers and online a lot with playstations. Have stopped tumble drying, and have stopped others putting dishwasher on before full. Nothing on standby.

Gas central heating (not on at all yet), hot water and cooking.

Washing has been drying outside, but last week, we used the airer and put the dehumidifier on for three hour shifts to keep humidity down in the 50s. All wearing lots of layers, and while I would like the heating on, I've not been really cold.

Sept, we averaged 13kwh elec and 8kwh gas. We've done all the easy fixes and not made a great deal of difference with gas, but elec has come down about 4kwh a day from Aug.

Wowzel · 18/10/2022 21:33

Electricity - on average 15

Gas - 33 on average each day last month

gogohmm · 18/10/2022 21:39

Estimate is 8 electric and 22 gas

So obviously most in winter but still not on yet as warm here

Afterfire · 18/10/2022 21:42

2 adults, one 10 year old dc. 3 bed semi. Two of us disabled so have more washing etc than most. One or two washes a day and a couple of dishwasher loads.

average 15kw electric and 20 kw gas - we’ve got the heating on 2.5 hours a day. Without the heating it’s about 7kw gas.

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/10/2022 21:42

Adult and teen. Average just under 3kwh of each until the heating goes on.

MadgeMarple · 18/10/2022 21:55

Four adults and two older teens.
Oil central heating (not on yet).
Oct we have averaged 11.5kw/day.
Nothing on standby, no drier, timers in showers to encourage shorter ones.
I feel we are really frugal with our use and would love to get it lower but can't think how. So I feel anxious about April and how the targeted help will be given: if it's based on a cap for X kw and anything over is priced at market rate it will be awful.

DancingLedgend · 18/10/2022 21:58

2 adults.
average 3-3.5 kWhr per day.
No gas.
No central heating.
Wood burner in one room.

BeavisMcTavish · 18/10/2022 22:04

Same size household 5 bed house, same utility deman - 110kwh per week but we run an electric car included in that.

energy saving spot lights everywhere (took bedroom from 700w to 80).

gas, hot water only currently 1 bath, 3 showers a day 8-12 kWh typically

You could take the bulbs out of your outside lights while you get them sorted. If they're not LED they could be using quite a bit if they're on 24/7 (and if they are floodlights then 😱😱😱).

ifonly4 · 19/10/2022 10:54

We get monthly bills based on monthly readings. We're using 4kwh electric, 5kwh gas - same time last year it was 5kwh electric, 6kwh. That's for month of September, no heating. Two of us in property at those times.

InMySpareTime · 19/10/2022 11:26

We use about 2kWh electricity a day if we don't charge the car, or 30kWh if we do charge it.
Gas is 1-2 kWh if we cook on the hob, or about 7 if the heating is on all evening (which has only been twice this autumn).
We are very low users as we have solar PV and a lot of insulation, and it's just the two of us in the house now.

Tomatowentsplat · 19/10/2022 11:36

2 adult + 2 DC
gas shower, hob, and heating - heating no on yet
gas - 3-7kWh
electricity - 3-6 kWh

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 19/10/2022 12:16

During last bill period it was gas 5.58 and electric 11.72

AlwaysLatte · 19/10/2022 13:08

They are LEDs thankfully!l Unfortunately they are not very accessible (need a platform ladder) so it's cheaper to get someone to replace the whole unit rather than get someone up there twice but we've got new lights arriving tomorrow

AlwaysLatte · 19/10/2022 13:11

We use about 2kWh electricity a day if we don't charge the car, or 30kWh if we do charge it.
This is really what's driving ours up. But we're averaging about 100 miles a day just on running around so it's still cheaper than using our diesel car. It's not quite the saving that it was when we first got the electric car though 🙁
