I've just cut my mobile bill by £50!

My contracts ran out in around august but I've not got round to sorting out a new contract/deal. I pay for 3 phones and was paying over £80 a month. I've just put 2 onto sim only deals as no new phones needed and my bill is now down to £30 a month for all 3! Dd's was already sim only. Loads of data, unlimited texts and calls. I'm so happy as I desperately needed to make cuts somewhere. I still can't believe I've cut my bill by so much!

If you haven't already, please check with your provider to see if you can make any changes to cut costs. I'm with EE and have been with them for about 10 years. They've always been very helpful and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Yeah we’ve been sim only for years now , they try and hook you in with handsets but in reality you don’t need to renew them so regularly

SarahR2022 · 15/10/2022 21:37

I still have a Samsung Galaxy S6....£9 a month....winner!
Mobile phones have just about evolved as far as is possible so what more are you actually getting for your £50/month that your existing handset doesnt do....and who needs 6 cameras anyway!!!!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 15/10/2022 21:39

I realised I’m on some heavily and probably incorrectly discounted EE sim only. It costs the grand total of £1.08 pcm!! Shhh don’t tell anyone- the BT guy I spoke to about my BB acknowledged it’s probably an error!

R2G · 15/10/2022 21:49

Just on top of this if you've nor yet set up Airtime Rewards it's great, you get cash back off your phone bills for using your registered card, which is then discounted off your mobile bill. I've got 90 pounds off my phone bill this year. Please use my referral code and you get an extra pound I believe.

Download Airtime Rewards for free with my code KAVJXMCJ and save money off your phone bill every time you shop with brands like Boots, Greggs, Wilko, Argos and loads more: airtimerewards.app.link/friend

We’ve only ever had Sim deals and then just bought a phone when needed / wanted . Both of my adult children have followed my frugal lead .

Lougle · 15/10/2022 21:59

When my O2 contract ran through, I contacted them to terminate. They asked what they could do to make me stay. I said that Giffgaff charge £10 per month for 15gb data (Giffgaff are a subsidiary of O2) and if they could match it, I'd stay. They offered £8. Happy days.

@R2G thank you, I've signed up.

Started buying phones outright a good few years ago when phoned updates only meant a small change, we have 3 sim only deals for £15. Contracts are a very expensive way to buy a phone.

gogohmm · 15/10/2022 22:10

I've bought my handsets outright for years. Saving up for them. My sim only is £10

userxx · 15/10/2022 22:11

@R2G I loved airtime rewards especially the monthly challenges, I switched provider now so don't use them anymore.

Shitfather · 15/10/2022 22:17

I was paying 25 quid a month for 150gb. Bonkers as my average is 15gb. Downgraded to 20gb for 8 quid.

If you check uswitch or moneysavingexpert, there are some cracking deals on Lyca and Lebara. Great for if you have kids who need SIM cards.

FredSleigher · 15/10/2022 22:18

I pay £4 per month for unlimited calls and texts (Asda mobile). I don't have a smartphone, though.

You can switch provider on the airtime rewards app!
Click the 3 dots/more on bottom right
Then my network!

I've just cut my mobile bill by £50!
userxx · 15/10/2022 22:28

@Scoleah Unfortunately Asda aren't linked with them. Shame.

Jellybean23 · 15/10/2022 22:49

How much data do you need per month? We are with Plusnet, £6 per phone per month, SIM only, 3GB of data, unlimited calls and texts. It uses the EE network. No long contract. At home, the phones use our broadband so only need data when out and about.

Jellybean23 · 15/10/2022 22:56

Just checked my app, I can upgrade to 4GB at no extra cost.

confused162 · 15/10/2022 22:56

Im already on a sim only deal, but if I found a cheaper one does anyone know if I can keep my number? thanks .

Yes you can keep your number. It's really easy, al, you do is text to request your pac code, you then give that to your new provider and it switches over.

Cynderella · 15/10/2022 23:26

I've used Giffgaff for years now. I buy secondhand phones outright and they last years. I don't even pay for data now unless we're going away because it's pretty easy to get by with wifi now I work from home.

£10 a month. Could get it a couple of quid cheaper but cannot be bothered the hassle of changing numbers or admin to move number to another provider.

Nat6999 · 16/10/2022 00:02

I worked out when I got both mine & ds phone contracts that I was paying almost the same as buying the phone & paying sim only contract costs, we both have top of the range phones & unlimited contracts.

I use Airtime rewards and Im with Tesco which isn’t listed. If you email AirTime they will send the money to your bank account or Amazon vouchers or paypal. Obviously you have to make sure the increments are £10 and over. Ive been with them for years and it really does add up

Yes you can.
You request a PAC code code either by phoning your provider or Texting PAC to 65075
If there are any early termination fees it'll explain this on the text message.
You have 30 days to issue your PAC to your new provider.

Number transfers usually go through next day if requested before 5:30, or next working day if you do it on a Friday!

Panauchocolat25 · 16/10/2022 08:24

I agree. I switched to sim only 2 years ago now and I've only been paying £8 a month! I'm shocked when people say they are paying 30+ now. I used to but never again.
