2000kwh gas
6000kwh electric
2 bed flat, Lancashire

littlepeas · 12/09/2022 15:18

5 bed modern mid-terrace - we're very well insulated and have a new boiler.

Electricity: 5725
Gas: 16893

This is without any serious effort to keep it down (although we only set the thermostat to 18, this is because we prefer it cooler). The recent price hikes, etc have made us realise how wasteful we are, so much more effort is being made now.

mrsm43s · 12/09/2022 16:11

5 bed extended 1930s semi, 2 adults 2 teens in the SE. Mix of old windows in original house/new windows in extension, plus loft has been converted a few years ago, so is fully insulated to modern standards. Boiler about 8 year old Worcester Bosch. One teenager has a whizzy gaming computer with a gazillion fans going which he uses for more hours of the day than we approve of...

11000 Gas
4500 Electric

Sadless · 12/09/2022 16:33

Mines 11300 gas 5900 electricity
3 bed semi detached in Lancashire.
That's based on last year's usage I am hoping that all the stuff I have done recently will change the amount I use.
If the average is 2900 a year then we'll over that and if they do charge 30p per kwh I have figured out it will cost £1800 alone for electricity only. Which is still rid and won't be able to afford it.

Thanks
Sal

Interesting (but depressing) reading... I knew our electricity usage was higher than average, but I'm shocked at just how much.

We use around 13700 kWh Gas & 5890 kwh Electricity. We were paying £137pm - looking like it will be at least double that unless we can cut our usage drastically.

Small 4 bed semi (same footprint as a standard 1930s 3 bed semi). 2 adults, 1 teen for most of the year, the other summer / xmas only (DD at uni).

Gas central heating (combi boiler < 10y old) and gas hob + wood burner in lounge and another in summerhouse (in use year round). Heating generally set to 18.

Electric oven & (crappy) shower send the meter sky high when they're in use - oven is knackered now and about to replace it, so hopefully that will help. Nothing we can do about the shower until we can afford a bathroom refit (i will change to a mains fed unit at this point).

DS has TV & console in the loft which is boarded out but no central heating - he has an electric heater up there which is definitely out of bounds this year. TV will have to come down I think & keep the loft out of bounds!

I wfh 2 days a week but wrap up & have electric throw thing so don't think it's me! Just replaced old inefficient washing machine and tend to dry laundry outside when we can / use sheila's maid & concertina airer, tumble dry only if we really need to. I'm debating replacing our integrated fridge freezer which is also not working very well (moved in to this house 5y ago and now everything is now falling apart!) - I would expect that is using more than it should be, but it's yet another outlay :(

Our smart meter isn't "smart" with current supplier & no appointments available for new one so I am using the old British Gas plugin monitor to try to gauge where we are with it.

Whiskers4 · 12/09/2022 19:02

Converted bungalow with four beds. Most two adults, 10% time an extra adult. Ours was 7000kw gas and 1800kw electricity. We've cut back, down to about 6600kw gas and 1500kw electric. Made a few more minor cutbacks last month, so hoping that helps even further.

AmberGer · 12/09/2022 19:11

Electricity 4103kwh
Gas 15419kwh
Based on last year. Hoping to reduce it this year.
Family of 4.
New boiler, newish (around 10 years old) doors and windows.
Old draughty Victorian terrace, high ceilings house, 3 floors (4 if you count the cellar).

Mumtofourandnomore · 12/09/2022 19:55

My gas is 24,000 and elec is 11,500. We have an EV which accounts for about a third of the elec (we have an overnight cheap tariff).

There are 6 of us (2 adults, 3 teens, and a tween) in a four bedroom detached house. We only have gas for heating so I have been trying to figure out why our usage is so high - I have a smart meter and even work for an energy supplier….. We have the heating on in Winter for about three hours a day max, and all year to heat our water for an hour each in the morning and evening - not really excessive. Maybe I need to look at radiator valves - are they easy to fit ?

BorgQueen · 12/09/2022 20:46

We must use an unusually low amount of gas. DH loves a red hot bath, I prefer a shower. We use the hob a few times a week but I rarely use the massive central wok burner.
Our boiler is less than 5 years old and I have the flow temp for the heating set at 65 degrees, any higher and it doesn’t condense properly as the return temp won’t drop enough. My hot water is set to 48 degrees (tap temperature) which equates to 60ish at the boiler.
The heating is normally set to 19 degrees, I do knock it up to 20/21 at night if it’s very cold. It’s on timer but I can control it from my phone and over ride the thermostat. I like my bedroom cool so the radiator is only set on 2, I put the electric blanket on for an hour before bed, otherwise my feet freeze.

The hot water morning and evening is your killer here.
3 hour heating is nothing for a consumption as high as yours.

Single but WFH full time in a 2 bed very well insulated flat (didn’t get above 25 even when over 40 degrees outside).

1906.6 electricity

9524.14 gas

That’s with not really making much of an effort to save gas / electricity (oodie and shutting door to coldest room during the day but nothing else. This year I also have a heated blanket / thermals ready to go and have bought an air fryer. Hopefully it can be reduced further.

nearly55 · 14/09/2022 13:24

4 bed detached house, me, DH and occasionally DSS when home from uni

2750 electric
12000 gas (cooking, heating and hot water)

I WFH all the time and DH one day a week. We are pretty frugal and always trying to cut down what we use even more.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 14/09/2022 14:02

Blimey why is our gas so high?!
Our estimated yearly usage is
23,5796 kWh gas
4676 meh electricity

It's a 4 bed 1930s semi but it's so warm compared to our last house. South facing so if it's sunny we dont need the heating on so much.
We are all wfh but have the heating on for approx 4 hrs a day in winter.
Gas burners on the hob. No other gas.
We've been here just a year so they do have a years worth of readings. (Correct readings too as it's smart metre)

Filleto · 14/09/2022 14:15

8000kwh electricity
24000 kWh gas 😭

8 bed Victorian house, 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 children plus 2 adult lodgers.

Not sure why gas was so high, we only have heating on for an hour in the morning and 2 sometimes 3 in the evening in the winter. Two thermostats so bottom floors set at 19 (sometimes up to 20) and upstairs to 17. Hot water on for two hours a day. It’s a new (5 years old) boiler

electricity I’m hoping to bring down by being more careful with oven usage etc. I’ve always hung washing out but last winter finished loads off in the dryer if it wasn’t dry by the next day which I won’t do this year. I’ve lowered the temperature of bedding/towel loads, already washed most clothes at 30. Also have cut out three loads a week by washing beds and towels fortnightly instead of weekly and by not giving dc3 clean uniform everyday and making dc pyjamas last 3 nights instead of 2. DC 4 no longer having toilet accidents helps a lot with this too!
One lodger complains we don’t have heating on enough/hot enough and has an electric heater in their room, might need to speak to them about how long they are using that for because if it’s on for hours and hours it would probably be cheaper to just have the heating on longer.

justtestingagain · 14/09/2022 18:25

We’ve moved suppliers and so this is an estimate …

27000 kWh GAS
4100 kWh ELEC

4 bed detached house, in the south east, 10 year old combi boiler… mostly double glazed.

We like the house toasty.

Problematic…

@Cosmos123 I suspect we have a similar hot water problem. How else to manage showers though?

Marymary987 · 14/09/2022 18:29

5 bed detached, family of 6

Electric 9,468kWh
Gas 9,002kWh

We have a combi boiler and have shortish showers now.
This has reduced our gas consumption down.
My electric went down. One of the best investment was a carpet sweeper.
My consumption dropped by 25% in a week by not using hoover and using the carpet sweeper instead.
I have now added the following; Wash clothes on economy wash 30mins. With the right detergent clothes wash just fine.
Had a second freezer which was half empty. Turned it off.

I insulated roof last year. This year I insulted under the floorboards. The entire house insulated with floor insulation boards 100mm thickness.
Boards cost £500 and we installed ourself. This will make house warmer now.

@Mumtofourandnomore

All the below makes quite a lot of assumptions but ...

If you have a 25kw boiler (typical) then :

3 hours a day heating @25kw for 120 days a year = 3x25x120 = 9000 Kwh

2 hours a day hot water @25kw for 365 days a year = 2x25x365 = 18250 Kwh

For a grand total of 9000+18250=27250 Kwh.

So from this the good news is it seems like your gas bill is about right (you may have a different power boiler, plus a number of other factors that affect the final result).

The bad news is that there probably isn't much doing apart from cutting back.

Your hot water/shower bill looks a bit high compared to mine.

For me in my house 1 hour a week @ 25kw heating gets me 6x showers. So for me each shower is approx. (1x25)/6= 4.1 kwh.

If all your hot water is used for showers (good approximation) and each of (6) you has 1x shower per day, then :

2 hours per day @ 25kw gets you 6x showers. So for you each shower is approx. (2x25)/6= 8.33 kwh.

So your cost per shower seems about double mine - a bit high for reasons unknown. If you can get your cost per shower down to the same as mine (4.1Kwh) then you would effectively halve your hot water bill for gas to around 9000Kwh, saving 9000Kwh of gas. This would save you 9000x0.07p=£630 per year at the lower tariff (0.07p per Kwh) and £1350 per year at the higher one (0.15p per Kwh).

Of course now you are probably going to tell me you all have baths.

There is little you can do if you have a combi boiler, apart from maybe turning the water temp down and limiting the shower time. If you have a system boiler (big hot water tank/cylinder), there are maybe some opportunites for optimisation. I managed to cut my hot water gas bill by 1/3 by trimming the amount of time it is on for. But you need a good thermostat - I have Hive which has 15min resolution and is daily programmable.

newtb · 14/09/2022 20:17

Électricity about 2000€
Gas about 80€ bottles gas for a hob
Wood about 200€

Have electric heating - will be spending winter under a 4 seasons quilt.

Mumtofourandnomore · 14/09/2022 20:48

@GasPanic , that’s really interesting - I completely agree with your assumptions (and we never have baths !) We have a hot water tank, so I think if we just heated it once per day and all had slightly shorter showers (or much shorter for the kids who do stay in there for ages !) we could make significant savings.

We are exploring solar and a battery options because I’ve worked out that it would pay itself back in six years based on our usage. We could heat our water with excess solar (in the summer).

We have a time of use tariff so could also charge the batter(ies) overnight in the winter when the solar is not available. I have also registered interest in a trial for a bidirectional charger for my Leaf (I charge this overnight on a 7p rate) so that would also allow me to shift our use to overnight too.

Thanks for your analysis although it has confirmed that my kids take hours in the shower…..
