To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

Was 18 degrees inside when I woke up this morning and 8 degrees outside. Heating still not on. I'd like to last till Nov if possible but not sure I will.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/10/2022 10:06

9 degrees and damp and drizzly here. It's not really cold inside 18 degrees but I'm going to light the woodstove anyway as I have lathe and plaster walls and generally a bit of dry heat is good for the building.

ivykaty44 · 22/10/2022 19:45

its been 17 degrees inside the house tonight and Ive actually overheated as snuggled up on sofa with cushions.

Hopefully the weather will stay mild and the heating can stay off for a while longer, then when it comes on have it very low to just take the chill off the house

OhMerde · 22/10/2022 21:45

I'd boil alive if I put the heating on. It's properly mild here still in the North West. 18 degrees today. Forecast 16 ish for another week yet. Have been too hot under the winter weight duvet.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/10/2022 06:35

We're in the NW (costal) and our living room has dropped to below 16° some days. We've had the heating on a little.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/10/2022 08:32

Haven had it on for quite a few days now as it’s got warmer where it was cold in morning and put on for 30m

its pissing down with rain at the moment but not cold

HayleyBean · 23/10/2022 09:41

We've not put our heating on yet but we've got an electric blanket on the bed for at night. I'm pregnant so I'm running hot at the moment and my husband is 80% body hair and runs hot too! We've only got the electric blanket on as my hips and back are killing me at night. Heating will have to go on at some point though as I'll have a newborn in December

Still not on. Spent most of the weekend wearing a T shirt outside.

altmember · 23/10/2022 21:57

Temperature in my house hasn't dropped below 19 degrees yet, and my thermostat is set to 16.5, so I reckon I'll see out the end of the month without it coming on, maybe longer.

Sexnotgender · 23/10/2022 22:06

Had the heating on once this month to calibrate the hive. Holding out as long as possible!

Natsku · 24/10/2022 07:36

I'm glad we decided to switch the oil boiler on (though I am worrying we'll run out of oil in the middle of winter when its so expensive to buy more) because it was below zero this morning, would have been freezing if it wasn't for the heat from the kitchen and hallway radiators (those ones alone are enough to keep the house warm enough for now, if we keep all internal doors open, until it gets colder). No thermostat so can't set it to kick in at a certain temperature, its just on or off so boiler set to 50 and its on all the time now.

OhmygodDont · 24/10/2022 07:46

Still not got below 19 inside. Looking really likely we will get into November which is a first for us normally it’s freezing by now. Managed to do all the washing and line dry it Saturday before all the rain yesterday.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2022 09:48

You don't need the weather to be warm to dry washing outside though. A breeze works just as well / better.

HayleyBean · 26/10/2022 07:38

@Natsku where do you live for it to be below 0 already?

TheFairyCaravan · 26/10/2022 07:45

We’ve not had the heating on or used the tumble drier yet. It was really warm yesterday. I was doing some chores downstairs and had to have the doors and windows open because I was just too hot.

Malfi · 26/10/2022 07:45

Nowhere near cold enough to think about putting the heating on. It’s still warm. I did put an electric blanket on the bed in preparation for colder nights, but it’s not cold enough to even put that on.

Natsku · 26/10/2022 07:49

HayleyBean · 26/10/2022 07:38

Finland. The weather has definitely taken a shift towards winter now with frosty mornings but forecast is saying it'll warm up a bit this week, today it was 4 when I got up so electric heaters are staying off for now and I've stolen DD's dressing gown.

GasPanic · 26/10/2022 09:45

Survived OK so far. Living room was 18 degrees this morning before the sun came up.

Am feeling that riding out the rest of October will be fine, but the forecast after 3rd November the outside temperature drops by 6 degrees C, so that will be a challenge.

Wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be one of the warmest Octobers on record.

OhmygodDont · 26/10/2022 09:53

bot checked the long long forecast but next Monday and Tuesday will be a low of 11c so I guess that might be when the heating turns it self on. Still not dropped below 18c inside and I’m manually checking the gas meter daily now to see usage.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 26/10/2022 09:55

It was really warm over the last few days even in Scotland although it was also grey and drizzly. Bit chillier today so wood stove is going back on as I'm working from home. It's really hard to get stuff done if you are cold. I am having to use tumble dryer though as it's properly raining. Hanging stuff in the greenhouse for 24 hours first so it's 70% dry first though.

JudgeRindersMinder · 26/10/2022 09:56

its Unseasonably mild here on the east coast of Scotland so no heating on here just now…..I’m grateful for the mild weather as we have no radiators in the house due to renovations ongoing just now!

Biscuits1011 · 26/10/2022 10:01

Normally I just turn it on when it’s a bit chilly but I’ve been more conscious since this cost of living… it goes on in the morning, and if it’s cold an hour in the evening but I really try not to put it on, saying that, I’ve got a newborn baby so I’m conscious of it not being too cold for her.

notdaddycool · 26/10/2022 23:01

Our thermostat is set at 19, I’m not sure the heating has been triggered yet, seems fine. Looks like the temperature will drop at the end of next week.

Cynderella · 26/10/2022 23:15

Still no heating or dryer, but I have started to use the dehumidifier when I see humidity creeping up on damp days where the windows haven't been open much, especially if washing is over airer. So far, there have been enough dry days to get all our washing dryish, so the airer is just airing, rather than having wet washing drying.

My second hand merino/cashmere layers are certainly more effective than the cotton layers I've always worn. They're relegated to wearing under/over PJs now.
