To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

I'm in Scotland and no heating on yet. DD has been sitting in leggings and a strappy top today so can't be feeling too chilly. She's 8 and quite active though. I've been off work this week so moving around more, cleaning, baking, exercising etc and have been fine but might change my mind once I'm sat still in front of a computer screen!

whatthejuice · 14/10/2022 06:48

Still haven't felt the need to put the heating on, and looking by the temperatures coming up we shouldn't need to until November 🤞🏼

OhMerde · 14/10/2022 07:52

Agreed. People were in t shirts here yesterday. The sun was so lovely and warm. 16/17 degrees for another week.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/10/2022 16:09

It's cold in the mornings and I'm tempted to put the heating on, but other than a 30 min blast to ensure it's all working I havent needed to as by lunch time its pleasantly warm even with the rain.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2022 16:26

Def warms up over the day but ams are chilly hence 30m about 7 keeps house warm till go to school 830

WahineToa · 14/10/2022 21:13

Haven’t put the heating on, in a stone house up north. I have been watching our electricity smart meter, we are down by a lot in our usage. We are using heated blankets at the moment a little bit. We hope we can get by with them as they are really good and cheap to run, plus the fire, with the heating on for only a few hours a day. We unfortunately have an oil tank too, last got 1,000 litres for 83p a litre. I don’t feel cold yet really.

altmember · 14/10/2022 22:00

I put the heating on today, but only to test it's still working as it's not been on since March! I'm still in shorts and t shirts and I had to open the windows to cool down today. I am lucky enough to live in the SW though. My smart thermostat is set at 16 to 17 when I'm home and 9 when I'm out.

I expect it'll start getting cold enough for the heating to kick in around the end of October as that's about usual. But I'll be trying to use my wood burner more this winter too, as wood is looking cheaper than gas.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 15/10/2022 15:26

Just lit the wood stove it’s 10 degrees outside 15 inside. It’s 1 degree overnight which is pretty cold am saving the oil for when it’s really cold getting up in the morning.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2022 15:56

Where as today didn’t put in am and won’t this evening as warm

bloodyeverlastinghell · 15/10/2022 17:03

Scotland. It was 5 degrees on my morning dog walk and it felt really chilly; damp too for extra fun.

FayeGovan · 15/10/2022 19:15

Damp, wet and cold Scotland here too. It was 7 degrees warmer in the SE this morning. Like a different world.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2022 10:17

Those who haven’t used heating yet

are you on your own or have kids

we are putting on for our daughter 5. It’s too cold for her esp in am eating breakie

a 30m boost does wonders

maybe if no kids I may not have used yet. Not sure

4 kids no heating. I'm not doing it for fun either. We aren't rich but neither are we poor. At the moment only dh is working and he isn't well paid but we can't afford hundreds per month on energy on top of all the other COL rises this year. So it ain't happening yet. I'd rather keep some cash back for when it's freezing outside. None of kids are moaning and it's 16 right now in the house. If there is a limited pot of money coming in then I'm going to live within in if I can.

I totally get the cost

ours clicked on at 14 the other day so was def chilly

but 30m is enough to take chill off

tbh I’m dreading when it’s proper winter /cold

wondering if after this year prices will drop back to what they were - paying 3 times what was previously in gas

IncessantNameChanger · 15/10/2022 22:26

I hope things drop back because right now I'm usingbexactly the same power as in summer ( when I was also watching the smart metre) and the cost has doubled.

30 mins doesn't seem to do much for the chilli in our house as the boiler, although newish isn't great. But maybe may memory isn't accurate as it's been off since end of March.

It was 19 last week in the house, 16 this week and it doesn't feel much different but maybe by 15 I will crack. It's just so worrying. 3 bags of shopping was £50 today as well.

ivykaty44 · 16/10/2022 06:46

3 bags of shopping was £50 today as well.

gish if I buy two bags it’s usually £50, trying to stick to one bag and be savvy with slow cooker meals

OhmygodDont · 16/10/2022 15:10

So warm here again today the patio doors are open inside reading 21.5c with the doors open. This mild autumn can stay.

Pootle40 · 16/10/2022 16:28

Where you live makes a huge difference. We were down near Nottingham a few days ago and was 16c outside. Today it's 12c in central Scotland. So not that mild an Autumn here.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/10/2022 16:41

It's 12c outside here and the doors are firmly shut, it's 19c indoors - the boiler was on this morning to get the house up to temperature so it must have been quite cold overnight and I don't think it will be long until it kicks in again.

Obviously I knew there was a marked difference in temperature between here in the N.E. and the S.E., but seeing the gas we would need to burn through to maintain equivalent comfortable indoor temperatures when it is just autumn is eye opening.

It does make me a little cynical about how useful it is for ofgem to publish average consumption statistics at all, not only does it vary greatly with the size of home and occupancy but the regional differences but render it all but useless.

OhmygodDont · 16/10/2022 17:08

Outside has been apparently a high of 17c with a low overnight of 14c.

That is a very fair point the the average usage is pointless. My in-laws had their heating on last night despite only being 1c cooler than us. Our old house even the same city again would of felT so much cooler due to the drafts it had. That’s without comparing to houses up north or in Scotland where it’s always cooler anyway.

Passthecake30 · 16/10/2022 20:57

We’ve not had it on yet, it’s currently 19.5 in the house and it was sunny and around 16 in the day today. I usually like to stretch it to October and now I’d like to go for November. We’re planning on getting a new front door as that’s where we lose our heat.

dementedma · 16/10/2022 21:00

Scotland here. I turn the heating on manually and so far only to dry laundry a couple of times.
Might set it for an hour in the morning and two the evening when it gets colder but managing so far.

GasPanic · 17/10/2022 09:06

Well over halfway through October and haven't switched it on yet.

Conservatory was at 30 degrees yesterday, great for clothes drying !

Living room in the evening it is normally about 18-20 with people in it and the telly switched on.

With it being sunny opening the blinds and letting the sunlight flood in and heat the room makes a big difference.

Weather outlook doesn't look to be getting really cold until the end of October, which could be a challenge.

Snowpaw · 17/10/2022 09:26

I am managing on 45 mins of heating or so in a morning. Often it is around 14-15c in the house when we wake up. It brings it up a few degrees, then by that time we're getting warm from showers / coffee and getting dressed, then the activities of the day. By the time it gets nippy again its lunch time and have a hot meal, then more activity in afternoon to keep warm. And then I warm up from washing up / cooking tea in the evenings, and DP and I manage fine under blankets watching TV with a warm drink. We have found our rhythm and I actually feel really wasteful about how we used to use heating before all these price changes.

OhmygodDont · 18/10/2022 16:58

Really warm here today inside reading 24.5c! Even with the patio door open the sun shining though the glass made it too warm. Crazy weather here

JenniferWooley · 18/10/2022 21:24

17.5°c inside this morning - it's been dropping by about half a degree each morning but gets up to around 19/20 without heating as the day goes on but I'm starting to feel that it's getting colder.

I have noticed I'm using more electricity by having to have lights on in the morning & as soon as I get in from work where as even just last week I didn't need to put the bathroom or kitchen light on in mornings.
