£10650 a year!!!

We currently pay about £200 a month - big old house with quite a lot of people in and out so thats not unreasonable but this is astronomical

What the fu*k....

It's over a third of my annual pre-tax income.

They are going to have people on the streets

In shock

and now I've clicked on find out more and it's gone up on the next screen to £11300

I think I'm going to have a heart attack

Is that a fixed deal you’re being offered or is it a variable one?

Supercal00 · 01/09/2022 16:09

Omg that’s horrifying! How do you know what your projection is? I’m British Gas and not had anything yet. In 2021 our spend was £1200 ish

Supercal00 · 01/09/2022 16:11

I have a fixed offer of £5555 a year which I won’t be taking up

dementedpixie · 01/09/2022 16:12

Sounds like a fixed rate. What is the price per kwh and standing charge? What is your usage per year?

listsandbudgets · 01/09/2022 16:14

Yes it was a fixed rate - I won't be taking it up and will take my chances with standard. If the government lower the price cap no way do I want to be tied into this.

Heart rate slowing down gradually!!

OP posts:
Dissimilitude · 01/09/2022 16:21

Any fixed rate that you're offered is likely to be pitched at somewhere between this October's cap, and next October - the idea being that you exchange a higher cost now, for a (potentially) lower cost next year, and some certainty.

But I think everyone is taking their chances that there will be some intervention before we reach the projected January / April 2023 costs.

If there isn't, and those projections come to pass, well, we all get to see what economic Armageddon looks like!

Interestingly OVO we're very honest and said fixed deals aren't cost effective currently and advise against them and sticking to standard variable.

They then wrote that they are working with government so I'm hoping this means they don't expect rises to continue to impossible levels.

pinkyponkyplink · 01/09/2022 19:05

@Dissimilitude I hope to god there is some intervention before January. We are with octopus. Our October prediction is £480 (currently £260 but was £150) and Jan is £776 and April is £860

Shit! Did you use MSE calculator to get those figures ?

pilates · 01/09/2022 19:10

I was offered £5,300 for the year and I declined.

Darkness22 · 01/09/2022 19:11

@pinkyponkyplink

Terrifying! We currently pay 300. God knows what we'd do at those prices. Currently remortgaging too. Not sure how much more we can take really. Already bit sleeping and stressed to the max.

Very similar to my current and estimated future costs. I'll take my chances with the variable, and sell my least favourite child next year if I have to.

Steakandquinoa · 01/09/2022 19:43

Actual ten thousand?? I could only laugh hysterically at that. Unbelievable.

Duchess379 · 01/09/2022 19:48

Oh. My . God. How are they truly expecting us to pay £10k a year in fuel?! 😳

stopthescammers · 01/09/2022 20:00

This has probably been asked and answered on other threads a million times already, but what it people don't pay? Or what if say your new monthly bill was quoted at £400 but you only paid them £300?

honkeytonkwoman38 · 01/09/2022 20:01

I've been looking on my ovo site and they appear to offer hardship funds, direct debit reductions etc for those struggling.

pinkyponkyplink · 01/09/2022 20:04

They'll get into get debt and have a prepayment meter forced on them to recover that debt.

Where did you get the prediction from? Doesn't bear thinking about if it's going to go up that much.

In answer to the question, what happens if you don't pay? Your supplied may terminate your supply, could take legal action leaving you with a CCJ which will mean it's hard to get credit in the future. Before than happens you might incur administration or late payment fees which will be added to your account. If you really can't pay, the best thing to do is contact them and work out a solution.

hedgehogscrossing · 01/09/2022 20:10

Thats crazy!! My bills are predicted to go from 85.00 pcm to 142.00 pcm then up again in Jan

Plus additional late / missed payment fees.

And additionally a ruined credit record.
Which will make any future borrowing harder more expensive.

Possible CCJs if the energy companies sell the debt to a collection agency who pursue it through the courts. Plus of course the additional agency fees they lump on the amount outstanding.

pinkyponkyplink · 01/09/2022 20:13

It's on the Which website. Try typing in which energy cost calculator. I put the currently monthly cost in and it came up with this based on the cap rise eg 82% increase in Oct
