Before it becomes a health hazard to have so much dust.

I think I can get away with sweeping up most crumbs etc but I'm concerned about the dust. Is once a month ok?! I've been doing twice a week usually.

We have cats - can leave a day or two if we have to, but it needs doing every day really.

SallyWD · 30/08/2022 22:30

I think the longest I ever leave it is 2 weeks (I do sweep the kitchen and hall during this time). Generally it gets done once a week and that's fine for us.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 30/08/2022 22:32

There's only Me and DH here. I can leave it about 2 weeks without it looking too grubby after that it starts looking dusty and a bit grubby.

Kdub · 30/08/2022 22:32

I would think you can get the majority up with sweeping. We have a rubber bristled broom and I can get downstairs inc rugs really clean with it.

Do you have pets?

No, but one messy toddler.

Carpets not laminate

Once a month?!!

no way unless you have wood flooring

imagine the dead skin cells, crumbs, bacteria and whatever else

why don’t you want to Hoover?

katepilar · 30/08/2022 22:36

Very individual, obviously. Depends on how much dirt and dust comes from the outside, how much you carry in, how much mess you create and on your standards. Hard floors easier to keep clean than carpets.

Chakraleaf · 30/08/2022 22:37

3 days

Lavendersummer · 30/08/2022 22:39

Could you get a manual carpet sweeper? We had one growing up. Maybe you could bet one on a local community group. www.argos.co.uk/sd/manual-carpet-sweeper/

TheChosenTwo · 30/08/2022 22:39

I hoover my downstairs a couple of times a day, mainly the kitchen. Have a cordless one in the utility, it’s more convenient than getting a broom out then the dustpan and brush. Upstairs and the hallways and stairs get done once a week by the cleaner and possibly again at the weekend by me if it needs it. We don’t have pets and no one really wears shoes upstairs so it doesn’t get massively dirty.

Diversion · 30/08/2022 22:40

Not more than a day, sometimes twice a day, although I am trying to cut back with the cost of electricity. I have carpets, I hate bits on carpets and we have a cat who sheds loads. I got shouted at by my midwife the day after I was discharged from hospital after a Csection with my 4th baby because she knocked at the door and I couldnt hear her over the hoover. I told her that I could not let her in my house unless I had hoovered!

BooksAndHooks · 30/08/2022 22:41

I hoover downstairs several times a day. I’m looking at getting a carpet sweeper to cut down on the hoover. We have a mix of wooden floors, lion, rugs and carpet.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/08/2022 22:41

I've not done it for a month now. Disclaimer, we were away for over 2 weeks of that and I've got covid at the mo and can't be arsed. Normally twice a week would be the bare minimum and that's with hard floors downstairs and periodic brushing in between. It feels disgusting now, it'll never go this long again.

cherrypiepie · 30/08/2022 22:43

Everyday (most days) I do the main living area , sometimes twice if I'm home all day, with the cordless dyson

Dog is a furball and I have allergies to dust mites.

Once a week I make dh get the Miele cat and dog out. (He does this about 1 in 4 weeks)

Is it energy cost related? Have you a cordless or a corded. I reckon the cordless Dyson is pretty low to power as the battery charges slowly. It lasts a meagre 6 mins on full power but that is fine for the whole of the down stairs -Quick whizz round. 30 mins on regular power and I am always impressed with how much it picks up. (It was a cheap one 07 I think)

Dobbysgotthesocks · 30/08/2022 22:43

About 5 minutes just now! Two moulting black dogs producing insane amounts of hair! I kid you not I got a whole carrier bags worth of hair grooming them today.

I am hoovering at least daily sometime twice or even 3 times. But it looks just as bad within minutes. It's a good job I'm an anti social cow and never have visitors!!!

NameChange329435 · 30/08/2022 22:44

I have 3DC and hoover every day. The living room and kitchen can need done 2 or 3 times some days.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/08/2022 22:45

we can last 2 weeks as our cleaners come on a Monday and so every now and again they miss a week. I just ignore the dirt tbh!

mondaytosunday · 30/08/2022 23:12

I have wood floors with a couple rugs downstairs and carpeted upstairs. I have two non shedding dogs and two Maine coon cats that shed their weight in fur daily. I guess I should vacuum every other day but to be honest I do it once a week. Upstairs I can get away with a bit longer. I do have a mini hand vac for emergency fur balls gathering at the corners!

Suzy14837 · 30/08/2022 23:14

I vacuumed today after two weeks and it really did need it, particularly on the stairs. Usually do it every week, although the kitchen is swept most days.

Amipreg1 · 30/08/2022 23:17

I could leave it a day if I had to for some reason but I tend to hoover downstairs every evening. We have a 7yo, dog and cat so I like to keep on top of it. Upstairs, I do once a week.

Branster · 30/08/2022 23:50

Because of our dogs, downstairs needs it daily. It's not just the hair, but all the invisible mud they trail around and leaves etc. And I brush them nearly every day.
I tried to reduce this to once a week but it didn't work. I tried using a dry fluffy mop to reduce vacuum cleaner usage but it was very time consuming and a right faff.
I average every two or three days now to save on electricity and it's not ideal.

Upstairs once a week is OK. I couldn't leave it longer even if there is no visible need. The dust and dirt is there.

AllLopsided · 31/08/2022 00:17

Hard floors - usually done once a week, sometimes once every two weeks with some spot cleaning. I would have to do it before we had visitors if it had been more than a week! Upstairs less frequently as not so much traffic. I could get out a brush and sweep but it seems like too much effort.

mrsfollowill · 31/08/2022 00:29

We have mostly carpets- no animals or small children either- 2 people out at work all day and just me wfh. Normally hoover whole house once a week. Never any food spills- we eat at a table always and rarely spill a drink. Any spills are wiped up and cleaned as and when they happen. Doesn't look unclean - if it does- no problem with whizzing through when needed.
