What are you sleeping under at the moment?

I'm trying to think ahead, especially as various friends are talking about electric throws/blankets etc.

I know I don't feel the cold particularly, but I'm trying to gauge how much I'm going to notice not putting the heating on this winter (I'll have to put it on when the student DC are here, but am going to try not to when I'm here on my own). I'm particularly wondering whether it's worth buying an electric throw (I WFH a lot in an uninsulated building, and I did sometimes feel cold last winter - though I do wear Ugg boots, thermal socks, several cardigans etc, etc to try to counteract it).

I'm currently sleeping under one cotton sheet, and sometimes chuck it off as I get too hot. I'm in the north of England, so not in a super-warm place.

What are you all doing ATM?

What does, sleeping with the doors open?

How so? The heating isn’t on.

so you don't lose any heat out of the house at night?
My home would lose a lot of (soon to be expensive) heat overnight if the doors were left open.
I'd also get critters inside, omg, Crawlies, mammals, birds. They'd all move in to the warmer space (!)

I have a 7 at the mo and my 15 ready for when it gets chilly. It’s so thick that it works as a weighted blanket too.

Spanielsarepainless · 08/09/2022 18:25

A cotton 2 tog duvet. I may move up to 4.5 at the end of the month.

Trulyweird1 · 08/09/2022 18:29

In Scotland - currently a summer duvet and a Labrador . Will probably add second Labrador when she feels cold; was thinking I need more Labradors 🙄

purpleme12 · 08/09/2022 18:34

So jealous of the Labrador. 😔

Haha! I also recommend a dog for warmth. My Romanian rescue is a hot water bottle.

The heating is not on at all. Not in the day, not at night, so it’s not saying any energy.

lljkk · 08/09/2022 21:01

ah, well, I guess that means you live somewhere with mild temps
I hope the critter count doesn't get too high

Coastalcreeksider · 08/09/2022 21:02

13.5 tog duvet all year round, even during the really hot spells we had.

If I was too hot, just chucked it back till I felt a tad chilly then pulled it back up.

Facecream · 08/09/2022 21:03

Naked, on top of the sheet. It’s still bloody hot - even with the windows open and the thunderstorms.. in winter..? It could be a mild, warm winter

London, and yes, it’s not turned cold here yet. Our bedroom is on the top (5th) floor, so not much makes it’s way up that high.

magicstar1 · 08/09/2022 21:11

4 tog duvet. I’ll change to a 13 tog when it gets colder, but still sleep with the windows open all night.

Riverskye · 08/09/2022 22:50

We’re just using a sheet but will go up to the 4.5 tog duvet in a month maybe. If I get super cold I just put a blanket folded over my side, my DH runs hot so it’s live living with a walking radiator 😂

Our duvet does have another section to it we can add if we really need to though if it’s an especially cold winter.

Geansai · 08/09/2022 22:59

@Badger1970 you probably know this but you can get duvets with two different togs - one side for you, 4.5 tog and 10 tog for your husband.

RoseMartha · 08/09/2022 23:14

A 13.5 tog duvet but still throwing it off me and sleeping with no covers to start with them sometime during the night i subconsciously pull it over me again. It is 23.7 degrees in my room. Better than a couple of weeks ago when it was 28.

My window is shut atm also although i will open it before I go to sleep.

QuiteContinental · 08/09/2022 23:24

When I was a student I used to put one 13.5 tog duvet underneath and one on top of me. The other thing that was surprisingly effective as we had such high ceilings was pitching my tent on the bed!

ilovebagpuss · 09/09/2022 08:14

10 or above tog feather/down duvet. 1 fat ginger cat at back of neck, occasionally smaller cat at feet.
DH also generates heat but its a king size bed so not always close enough.
The down/feather duvet is getting on a bit but it's so warm it does all winter.
My DD has one of those Teddy duvet sets and she loves it it looks very cosy.
It's not often in the winter I need anything more but if it drops below -5 I might chuck another duvet on top.
It's worse sitting around WFH or evening and I have a big dressing gown but need new slipper socks.
I used to have a basic sleeping bag under my duvet as a kid and I loved that I felt so snug.

YellowPlumbob · 09/09/2022 08:16

4tog duvet which gets thrown off.

I’ll bring my weighted blanket back out for winter to go on top, and one of the knitted blankets I made for in between.

The weighted blanket seems to make me very warm!

Geneticsbunny · 09/09/2022 08:47

We had 13.5 tog duvets and normal long sleeved pyjamas during the beast from the east in an unheated house and once in bed we were warm enough. I think I put wooly hats on the kids who were 4,7 and 9.

eveoha · 09/09/2022 10:58

Gave down duvet away - now have a British wool duvet (EBay) and cotton sheet - highly recommend them
