What are you sleeping under at the moment?

I'm trying to think ahead, especially as various friends are talking about electric throws/blankets etc.

I know I don't feel the cold particularly, but I'm trying to gauge how much I'm going to notice not putting the heating on this winter (I'll have to put it on when the student DC are here, but am going to try not to when I'm here on my own). I'm particularly wondering whether it's worth buying an electric throw (I WFH a lot in an uninsulated building, and I did sometimes feel cold last winter - though I do wear Ugg boots, thermal socks, several cardigans etc, etc to try to counteract it).

I'm currently sleeping under one cotton sheet, and sometimes chuck it off as I get too hot. I'm in the north of England, so not in a super-warm place.

What are you all doing ATM?

4.5 tog. Will swap over to the 10.5 tog again for Winter.

Froodledo · 04/09/2022 10:08

6kg weighted blanket.

Favouritefruits · 04/09/2022 20:32

1 tog duvet at the moment, I’m a hot person anyway, I’m in the north too. I’m the winter I’ll have my 4.5 tog duvet and a throw and if it gets very cold I’ll throw my dressing gown over my feet. I can’t afford heated throws and Oodies etc. so I’m just going to manage how I usually do.

dudsville · 04/09/2022 20:47

Duvet-less duvet cover all summer. Occasionally I've grabbed a light quilt to throw over it in the night on the rare occasion the temp has dropped. I'll then add my duvet back, which is 7.5 for all the colder months, and i move to brushed cotton bedding for the coldest months with a hot water bottle and/or a little electric pad the size of my back that turns off after 90 min.

Badger1970 · 04/09/2022 20:58

Bastard DH has been moaning non stop about being cold so we've taken the 4 tog off the bed today and replaced it with a 10.5 tog one (he's on blood thinners to be fair and really feels the cold). I've pointed out that we're not going to be saving money this winter when I need to have a fan on full blast pointing at me all night..........

liveforsummer · 04/09/2022 21:00

I'm a 13.5 tog duvet all year round so not sure how I'm going to manage. Normally have the heating on from October to may

Quizzed · 04/09/2022 21:04

In winter I have a fleece duvet cover with a thick duvet and fleece bed sheets so it's nice and snuggly. I wear fluffy bed socks, fleece pyjamas and I also have a blanket at the bottom of the bed in case I get cold. I never sleep with the heating on as i feel as though I'm suffocating and end up having to get up and switch it off anyway.

Dannexe · 04/09/2022 21:14

Currently a bamboo sheet plus 4.5 tog wool duvet. As autumn settles on we will switch the 4.5 one for the other part of the all seasons duvet which is 10.5 tog and then when it gets really cold we will attach them together and also have the electric under blanket on.

im menopausal and the combination of bamboo bedding with the wool duvets has helped my sleep

AlmostAJillSandwich · 04/09/2022 23:28

a thin throw blamket from poundland

IAmStupidFace · 07/09/2022 19:15

4.5 tog all year round here in the Midlands. DH, even though he never wears a stitch in bed, gets very hot in the night in the summer and is pretty normal throughout the rest of the year. Me? Not so much. I'd love a 10.5 tog in the winter but he'd only moan so I'll compromise by wearing one of his old t shirts as well and then bemoan that I'm cold and I'm giving up valuable warmth for him until he bribes me one way or another. Totally worth it.

BrownOrangeRed · 07/09/2022 19:57

We're using a 7.5tog duvet at the moment as it's still quite warm, as soon as it starts getting cold we swap over to a 13.5 winter duvet with 2 fleece blankets on top, will also swap from summer to winter pyjamas

Terfydactyl · 07/09/2022 20:13

Wool filled duvet, excellent for all seasons, over that a weighted blanket, and cos dogs a big blanket on the top. And the fan on to counteract. Am hoping soon to be able to turn fan off. Menopause helps, I'm permanently blistering hot.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 07/09/2022 20:15

Still a sheet for me but my pyjamas are higher coverage and it’s only a matter of time before the duvet needs to go back on.

AdoraBell · 07/09/2022 22:51

Just the duvet at present, with a top sheet as always and that is the same as layers with clothing. We have a good bedspread for cold weather. Other than that I use heavy weight, like flanalette, pjs.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/09/2022 23:17

4.5 tog summer duvet, window still open. When it gets a bit colder will swap to a 10.5 which generally seems to be warm enough, hot water bottle if it gets really chilly or I have middle-aged aches and pains. Don't wear anything to bed and don't have the heating on at night unless it snows.

Layers. I get REALLY cold in bed
Fleece blanket under the bottom sheet. A top sheet to trap air, blanket on top of the duvet
Pjs and socks

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 00:16

I sleep on top of the covers, and with the doors to the terrace open (unless it’s raining.)

I’ll move under the quilt in the winter.

purpleme12 · 08/09/2022 00:29

Wow you sleep with doors open.
You must feel very safe

I do, thanks. I don’t think it’s likely anyone’s going to carry a ladder through the dense, prickly forest at the back of the house and scale five stories to get at me.

Dannexe · 08/09/2022 08:33

Yes it’s a big benefit of living relatively remotely. We also have the doors open through the night for most of the year.

lljkk · 08/09/2022 12:11

Sounds very energy-wasteful. Maybe PP lives somewhere with mild temps.

What does, sleeping with the doors open?

How so? The heating isn’t on.

MooBaggage · 08/09/2022 12:21

I'm a wuss and like to be hot, so have ordered (and it's arrived today!) an electric throw - looked at MN recommendations, obvs Grin

I WFH around 50% of the time and am hoping that that, with thick socks, will mean I don't cave in and put the heating on during the day. In the evenings, I've got a woodburner in the lounge so will use that as much as I can.

I would normally have the heating set to around 20.5/21, so have already turned it down to 18 and will have it on for an hour in the mornings and then try to manage with electric throw for when I'm WFH/hot water bottle/more clothes and then the woodburner in the evenings. Will stick the heating on as and when we've got people round!

The Govt announcement today is all very well, but prices are still nearly double what they were last winter, so needs must....

MooBaggage · 08/09/2022 12:22

Oh and I think we have a 9 tog duvet which is on all year. Window open though, as we both like a bit of cool + warmth! We've got a thick blanket which goes on top of the winter for the very coldest nights - in the North West here.

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2022 12:28

We have a 4.5 tog duvet on, windows open, and I don't expect that to change until at least November. We never have the heating on at night through preference anyway and the bedroom radiators are off, and we can put the duvets together if it gets really cold which is my favourite thing as I love the cold outside the bed feeling. I love getting into bed with a hot water bottle, esp my very long hottie from Dunelm (which doesn't stay hot nearly as long as a normal one, but is fab to snuggle with)
