Broadband without the home phone

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 16:44

Does anyone have broadband without the landline and is it cheaper?

The only people who ever phone the home phone are FIL how is terminal and my DM and I'm really not bothered if she calls me again Grin

We have broadband only with Virgin - around £26 month

emeraldcity2000 · 26/08/2022 16:48

Yes, we're renting while having our house done and decided to go for this. It's been absolutely fine and much cheaper. We use cuckoo (£15 per month)

LittleLlama · 26/08/2022 19:36

We are also with Virgin for broadband along and my mobile phone (£32).

Str8talker · 26/08/2022 19:43

We live in the countryside with terrible broadband speed through the phone line. For a few years we've had Internet through an LTE router. This takes a mobile phone SIM card and uses its data allowance each month. It's always been marginally better than the land line so we've now ditched that as we just use mobiles.
If your mobile signal is decent, ditch the land line and buy a secondhand LTE router. Get a SIM card with a SIM-only contract with enough data for each month and Bob's your uncle. It costs us £22 pcm for 100GB.

When we got our virgin it was actually cheaper to get both as a package… we don’t actually have a phone plugged in to the landline and I couldn’t tell you the number for it if we did

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/08/2022 19:49

Vodafone don’t use a landline.

23 quid a month. No problems. Multiple streaming, home working, Teams etc.

mizu · 26/08/2022 19:51

We've just renewed with EE and chose a package without the landline for the 1st time. It was a bit cheaper and no one ever used it.

QuePrima · 26/08/2022 20:32

I think a home phone is quite niche now. I've not had one for longer than I care to say. I pay £40 a month for BT Tower halo or something. Loads cheaper out there. If your mobile is with o2 then they have just joined with virgin (I think it was virgin) and are giving big discounts plus additions to your mobile.

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 20:36

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Glad to know that it's working out for so many people Wink

Yes, mainly because all 4 of us now have Mobiles, and it's all going to VOIP in 2025, so moving house seemed a good time to loose the landline.

Fatballs · 27/08/2022 17:18

Vodafone don’t use a landline.

We are with Vodafone and it does have a landline. We do have a phone connected to it but it costs nothing extra unless we use it. £20 a month for Superfast 2.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/08/2022 17:27

We don’t have a phone connected to our landline. We don’t pay any standing charge. Vodafone use the landline but don’t charge you for it.

gatehouseoffleet · 27/08/2022 19:26

I have broadband (and TV) without a landline with Virgin and it isn't significantly cheaper than it was with the landline.

cheapskatemum · 27/08/2022 19:29

Yes, we got rid of the landline & are still with BT for broadband. It is significantly cheaper. A word of warning though - they literally stop your landline straight away - no notice period.

Chasingsquirrels · 27/08/2022 19:29

I've just been comparing prices as my contract is expiring, and this is the first time I've noticed a number of offers without a landline number.

I never use mine.

I think that would be ok. I'm trying to think of how might call us in it. Might have to update our records at the Doctors and Dentist Wink

If you still need the landline for the broadband internet connection, what is the point of getting rid of the phone connected to it? It doesn’t take up much space.

As I said upthread, just having the phone doesn’t cost any more than not having it and it means you can keep your old number so that elderly relatives etc. can still contact you.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/08/2022 09:19

Because we never used our landline….

Fatballs · 28/08/2022 09:44

You probably did to get the internet to your property, but in any case that question was meant for the OP who was wondering who some people were going to contact her if she got rid of her landline phone.

Fatballs · 28/08/2022 09:44

How some people

I could be talking absolute shit but I think with fibre and the like, they don't use the same connection as a phone. They just use a broadband connection and so to have both costs extra.

Back when I stopped having a phone line, I saved the line rental of the phone immediately.

TimeAtTheBar · 28/08/2022 11:16

We have fibre broadband with no phone line. Hey Broadband. Extra super duper high speed etc, £30pm.

LittleBearPad · 28/08/2022 11:19

We have broadband, tv and landline with virgin. When I tried to cancel the landline I was told it would be more expensive 🤷‍♀️

Fatballs · 28/08/2022 11:42

Unless you have fibre to the premises, and currently most people don’t, they use exactly the same copper wire from the box in the street as the phone does. Which is why most companies don’t charge extra to connect a phone to it, they just charge for outgoing calls.

Chasingsquirrels · 28/08/2022 12:24

BT is cheaper without a "landline number" than with one.
Clearly the line is still there, and used to supply the broadband, but you don't have access to phone services on it.

Regardless, BT without a landline number is still more expensive than other providers with one.
