BigSkies2022 · 01/08/2022 17:57

Hello all, catching up on myself after returning from Devon, which was heaven. The walk from Branscombe to Beer, and back again on Hooken Undercliff is glorious. Budleigh Salterton down to Otterton along the Otter also. Ddog had an absolute ball flinging himself into various bodies of water, as did I. Didn't even spend that much, really, aside from a couple of nice lunches at farm shop cafés and some traiteur style take-out from the farm shops.

DS had looked after the house fine while we were away, although we did return to find that the pump on the coffee machine had stopped working (but 10 years old, fixed once, and owes us nothing) and one leg on the sofa had collapsed (20 years old, IKEA number, also owes us nothing, but convenient for sitting upon while we sort out a replacement and upgrade). DH has ordered a replacement coffee machine (about £230) and fixed the leg on the sofa. Spent the weekend cleaning the house, doing laundry and ironing. Watched Deliverance (which is 50 years old!) on Apple TV on Saturday, roasted a chicken on Sunday.

Spending so far: £50 on new underwear. Have finally tracked down a comfortable and pretty bra (luckily, it's an M&S one for £14 rather than the Freya one for £33), so have ordered 2 and some knickers to match - fancy! Replacing ancient underwear gradually, and not before time really. £6 on 2 secondhand books.
I have about £130 personal disposable cash this month after bills and savings accounted for, so planning to keep myself busy with reading, yoga, barbell workouts in the garage, and generally trying to keep hold of my pennies without being utterly miserable about it. Joint account in reasonable shape, and my goal there is to pay down the debit balance on the energy account and start putting some money aside for the next holiday/new sofa (or, more likely, the new energy tariff that we'll switch to in October - I think our monthly payments are going to be a horrible shock).

Em - congratulations on the end of nursery fees! A wave and a hug to those going through hard times on the health front.

BigSkies2022 · 01/08/2022 18:30

Ah, Lux, you are enjoying Danish subsidies on childcare, are you? I haven't paid nursery fees in the UK since 2004, but even then, the costs were more each month than our mortgage and basic bills combined.

Fearofawelshplanet · 01/08/2022 18:37

Missing in action sorry, didn't get job then had an horrendous stomach bug for a week! Anyhow, 20 on electric key, 3 in mcdonalds ice cream cream kids, 8.53 cushion covers pre loved off ebay. Touching up the white paint and organising house before I go back to work and start teacher training. Lots of Pinterest free projects this end! Got loads of yellow stickers from my local shop, 💛 cake 10p, free soup! Yay! No more overtime, so credit card paid down, time to be very frugal. Goibg round charity shops for q slow cooker tomorrow, picked q great toasties maker up at weekend. Then I want an air fryer. Got 2 airers ready for winter fuel increase.

Clearly yes Halo couldn't imagine paying that much..

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/08/2022 19:23

£60 in the car, just over 1/2 a tank. £30 Asda, £60 matalan on boring basics.
school shoes and uniform tomorrow ££££££££

Decafflatteplease · 01/08/2022 19:46

fear we have recently bought an air fryer, absolute game changer and we can really see the difference in the amount of gas we are using as I think we used the oven just once in July. It's so much quicker using the air fryer.

life I'm not looking forward to the big uniform shop either. School shoes x 3 is £150 we always buy clarks as they do last. We have decided this year though to only buy what uniform they actually need rather than buying all new just because it's September if that makes sense

Alfiemoon1 · 01/08/2022 20:16

Blimey em I had no idea nursery fees were so expensive my dc are 17 and nearly 21 I worked part time when they were young and dm dmil looked after them

minesalargered · 01/08/2022 20:30

Wait until the university costs start is all I'll say, and it's like paying nursery fees all over again 🤣.

Dangerously close to a NSD, unless Too Good To Go offer a Gregg's, then I'm all over that as DS is off work for two days!

Glad the school uniform days are over too!

Holiday sounds fab Skies, love that the dog lived his best life 🤣.

Welcome orange

Menu plan
Tonight - harissa, halloumi and roast veg skillet bake with couscous. Most of veg from DSIL's allotment so frugal even with the cheese.
Veggie sausage and mash, lots of steamed veg
Veggie curry and rice, naan
Bhaji burgers, salad
Veggie chilli, beef chilli (for company coming round), we are 99% veggie.
Sweet potato dhal.
Mushroom stroganoff and rice
Ottolenghi baked rice dish, main expense some dried apricots from Lidl.

Lots of beetroot to use so hummus will be made and beetroot and feta salad will be made for lunches, even though it's not our favourite in truth.

LuxembourglivinginDenmark · 01/08/2022 20:49

minesalargered so happy we dont have university fees either or school uniforms Grin we must save a fortune

I’ve been lucky with my first teenager. Got an apprenticeship straight from school so no Uni fees and he earns enough to pay for his own driving lessons.

Although those lessons won’t be happening any time soon as he’s just failed his theory test. Gutted for him. He’s putting on a brave face but I can tell he’s really upset about it. And it’s over a month before I can get him another test slot.
