Hello everyone,

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon. In the meantime, you might find some useful information on our guide for dealing with financial difficulty.

Stepchange will be able to help you. Best of luck.

grafittiartist · 07/07/2021 23:15

Do have a look at the money saving expert forums. Martin Lewis's site.
There is loads of supportive advise on there- well worth a look.
I do hope that you find some helpful suggestions there. Good luck.

Contact Stepchange if you can. So sorry you're so ill - must be very hard trying to deal with everything. Do you have any family or friends who can help with contacting Stepchange?

Akire · 07/07/2021 23:24

If you can’t pay and are terminal ill then there is little sense in them chasing you for debts.
This was from national debt line see pic. You do need let them know formally or course they not going just take your day so.

“ In these situations the creditor may accept that it is not in their interest to pursue recovery of the debt. You can also point out that if the creditor applied for a court order the court is likely to accept that you can only pay a token amount, for example £1 a month. It is unlikely to be worth employing a debt collector to try to recover the debt, as it may cost the creditor more to pay the debt collection agency than they get back.”

Are you in hospital?

HmmmmmmInteresting · 07/07/2021 23:28

I'm really sorry about your situation,OP. I was going to say the same as a PP: if you're terminally ill your creditors can't really pursue you, so inform them formally and it will be sorted.

Putting on your big girl pants is invigorating.

OppsUpsSide · 07/07/2021 23:45

Have you spoken to your creditors? When I had a stroke and zero income (i was in an abusive relationship at the time so officially ‘we’ had an income but in reality my children and I had 0) I spoke to my creditors and actually they were very kind and helpful. It’s a scary prospect but the experience of calling and speaking to them was actually very reaffirming and freeing. Good luck lovely Flowers

Nannakaka · 08/07/2021 00:02

Thanks so much for all the good advice 😃☺️ I will be chasing all avenues up tomorrow xx

My husband was left with a debt of £1400 (we’d already paid £600 so it was around £2k before) when his ex-wife point blank refused to pay her share even though it was in her name. Anyway, he called the company it had been passed to and said he could only afford £1 a month and they just had to accept it.

Believe me when I say the power of silence helps. What I mean is this:

Company chasing money: ‘We need you to pay xxx amount’ (usually ridiculous)

You: ‘I’m sorry that’s just not affordable, can you suggest a lower amount?

Company: No, we can’t

You: Unfortunately, I just don’t have it but can offer a £1 a month.

SILENCE

Make it really uncomfortable and don’t say a word until they do.

DH actually did this with two companies, the one mentioned and the another. Both debts linked with his ex wife. The second also allowed a token payment of a pound a month for about two years and now it’s a tenner.

Honestly, try it. It’s a well known negotiation technique.

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 25/07/2021 07:33

Btw, don’t be afraid to keep up the negotiations until you get the monthly amount you want. The person on the end of the line doesn’t care.
