Meadow Brew for you in sleepless solidarity. Let's hope tonight is better!

So went to the Drs, dd2 has tonsillitis, so she will be off for the rest of the week.
School will not be happy as her attendance is in the low 90s, but she has had a few days off and I've always called. She also has to have time off school for her epilepsy appointments, which I also give in in advance, plus the other week another child swung her around and she hit her nose on the concrete, (I collected her), so I need to make sure that has been authorised.

I agree about the homework being to much too.
Dd2 is in year 4 and has reading each night
(which we would do anyway, so that is fine) but also to go online and read, I refused because her being on a screen for a prolonged amount of time, can increase the likelihood of her having a seizure.
Times tables each night, which isn't too bad as she has a book to work through, but they also wanted her to practice it using an online app, I refused again.
Then there are spellings, which are anything between 10-20 each week, which she has to wright out 3 times, then to put those words into sentences. Plus another 3 tasks a week. Which roughly take 30 minutes each, so basically she does homework everyday, which isn't great really.
She has cried at times because of the amount of homework, luckily her teacher is understanding and has told her to do what she can. I think I will have a chat with her teacher pointing out my concerns.
Homework isn't compulsory in primary, is it?

WreckTangled · 05/02/2019 17:42

Oh my goodness curvy that's ridiculous! Dd is also year four and I think they're meant to read a few times a week (I stopped recording dds reading last year), 10 spellings which I'm fed up of telling the teachers they're too easy so she doesn't do those either, and one piece of topic homework each week which is chosen from a selection of 12 mostly craft or small writing pieces. They have a maths app thing too but dd is only allowed an hour of the iPad on sat and sun and she doesn't want to use it for maths which I fully support. I know they're trying to encourage their maths but I hate that they get them to compete with class mates on this app AngryAngry I try to keep them away from the iPad not encourage them

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 05/02/2019 18:11

Yes I know Wreck, it makes me angry too, that they encourage them to beat each other's score. Even if dd didn't have epilepsy, I wouldn't allow her to use her tablet time for homework. I'm really glad you think it is a lot, some of the parents think it is ok and others just don't say anything, but I'm not afraid of being that 'parent'.
I have to say I have the up most respect for teachers as they do an amazing job and I understand the huge pressure they are under from the government, but at the same time I have to fight dds corner, as no one else will.

Wolfcub · 05/02/2019 18:32

Sea that’s really tough. Homework with ds has always been a battle. We once had a seven hour standoff not my proudest moment and ds is NT so I can only imagine what a challenge it can be.

On prime it’s worth downloading life in pieces, marvellous Mrs maisel, Jack Ryan shadow recruit and once you are back in the uk and nowhere near a plane the Loomkng Tower

Lousy day. Utterly fed up and ready to Jack it all in. Grr.

Em if they delivered it why do you have to return it?

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 05/02/2019 18:54

Ugh just lost a post!

Anyway thank you ladies for the coins, really do appreciate it and dd is going to be made up with them.

sneaky when I got free px I had an exemption card, I wonder if they have stopped doing those.

I hate homework as well, dd has always found it difficult. seacow I know what you're saying about getting the routine starting now but honestly I wouldn't worry about it now. Encourage looking at books or building things/play/drawing but leave more structured stuff to school.

Dd had to be collected early today as was hit in the face with some ice, she now has a black eye 😠 what's the matter with kids?! I spoke to the head when I picked her up and asked him to investigate it properly.

Finished work slightly late due to sorting out dd but have survived my 6 day stretch! !

SneakyGremlins · 05/02/2019 19:04

Does anyone know if a petrol station Tesco (as opposed to a supermarket) will do electric key top ups?

Thatsnotmybaby · 05/02/2019 19:38

I'm afraid I don't know that @SneakyGremlins.

Spends today:
£2 work canteen
£39 birthday gift for DNephew.

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/02/2019 19:46

Don't know sneaky soz.
Wolf - work, home or both.
£100 on maintenance jobs. Was going to be more but 1 didn't need doing. He said £90 I have him the rest as he's good as gold.
£3 cubs then that's it

ememem84 · 05/02/2019 20:41

wolf oh it didn’t get to me!! If it got to me I wouldn’t return it. It just got to the courier people here. And they sent it back. Because they don’t deliver here...🙄

I super want to get rid of the litter wreck but catface doesn’t seem interested in going outside. She’s stepped out twice. So it’ll be a while before she poops outside.

Ds had Chinese food at nursery. So jealous. He smelled all hoisin-y and when I put him to bed I found noodles in his nappy from dinner!! Haha. Noodle boy!

ememem84 · 05/02/2019 21:01

I’m tucked up in bed. I’ve been reading Michelle Obama’s book. I adore her and find her super inspirational. I said that to my boss the other day. He looked surprised because I’m not black....

If you haven’t. Read her book.

AdoraBell · 05/02/2019 21:08

🤦‍♀️ em boss sounds like a gem Hmm I do want to get her book.

I have been naughty, slipped a Clarins eyebrow pallet into my Boots order for things I actually need Blush

WreckTangled · 05/02/2019 21:14

Oh sorry em I didn't realise she hasn't been out properly yet. Maybe in the summer Grin

ememem84 · 05/02/2019 21:26

I hope so wreck

Every weekend since we’ve been here I’ve opened the door and sat with her on the threshold. She sniffs the air and occasionally steps out a bit but not enough. She’ll get there. Plus it’s cold. So who can blame her. Why go outside when she can snuggle on a blanket on the bed!

Unescorted · 05/02/2019 21:34

Hi Money welcome to the thread. You seem to have your spending screwed down. Maybe look at 0% balance transfers. Otherwise prioritise the most expensive debt first. Make minimum payments on the cheaper ones and throw the book at the one that is costing you the most. When that is paid off tackle the next. Also check it not due to regular over spending - if it is you will need to cut back on the luxuries. Otherwise it just gets worse and worse ( this is said from experience)

Sneaky no idea - maybe just call the store and see if they can advise.

Wolf I hate days like that. I just repeat "it pays the bills, it pays the bills" over and over through gritted teeth. I may be getting a reputation as the mad lady in the corner. It gets me through.

Em I get you with the expectation that is all lovely and amazing and you should be so happy, but inside there is the conflict and uncertainty. DD was unexpected, I had no maternal instinct and for most of my pregnancy I wanted to run away. Everyone to this day thinks I was just uber laid back about it all. In reality I was dissociating from the whole caboodle - if I didn't think about it, it wasn't real . Even now it doesn't feel like me who went through the process. I love dd to within a inch of her life but the pregnancy, birth and for about a month after was a dreadful experience ( I have never told anyone that ....). I guess I am kind of saying it will be ok and you don't have to love being pregnant, not everyone does. It is yet another myth to beat ourselves up about when we feel we are falling short of an unachievable ideal.

I rebelled as a parent.... mine didn't do any homework in primary. It was set but we didn't do it.

SnugglySnerd · 05/02/2019 21:37

Actually that's a book I've been meaning to read Em.
Hope DD us ok Girlie. Also Curvy's DD. Tonsilitis is horrible.

Ds is having a lovely sleep - right across the middle of our bed! He looks so peaceful and sweet part of me is tempted to just leave him there and look at him all night!

Unescorted · 05/02/2019 21:38

em why do you have to be Black to read MO's book? By extension do we have to be men to read Thomas Hardy and a God to read the Bible?

Can someone other than me set up the new thread please - I made a mess of the last one. I refuse to do any more

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 05/02/2019 21:38

She might need a bit of encouragement em 😉 as soon as the weather turns a bit nicer I'd be shoving her out (mean cat mum!)

I want Michelle Obama to run for president! !

Spent £4.50 ish on food again today, been a terrible week for buying food but just so time poor atm.
