How to give up costa / cafe Nero

I am obsessed, I go every day and sometimes twice.

I often buy cakes too because if I buy multi packs from the supermarket instead I eat too many in one sitting.

Anyone a reformed coffee shop addict ?! It’s about £5-£8 a day !!!

I still go on occasion but when I totted up how much I was spending each week in the past it was horrific. Even 3x a week was coming in at about £500 a year!!!

If you spend £5-8 a day... £1300-£2000 a year!!!

feral · 04/03/2018 22:53

Ie that figure should stop you 🙂

notthatonethanks · 04/03/2018 22:56

I think work out your trigger. Mine is work. I have no problem staying away at weekends but I kind of hate my job so I need it to get me from the station to the office Grin

I'm stricter with myself now, I'm allowed two a week (usually one on my first working day of the week and one on my last), on the other days I make sure I'm distracted with other cheaper treats for my work days (e.g. I pack a croissant to eat at my desk first thing) so I'm not tempted by expensive coffee.

Go on to the demotivate/motivator tool on money saving expert website. It made me start to take sandwiches to work.....saved enough for a holiday.

Raver84 · 05/03/2018 13:42

But a conteigo. Saves me loads

swimster01 · 05/03/2018 17:02

Have you tried cheaper alternatives - you can buy individual filter coffees and lattes that you can make at work?

helpfulperson · 05/03/2018 18:32

I know it's a bit of a swear word on here but Greggs do a good latte for under £2. Maybe that's a good start.

almondcroissantplease · 05/03/2018 18:39

I think you have to take it day by day and work on cutting the coffees down one at a time, as silly as that may sound. I had a real addiction to mochas and didn't like that I became almost reliant on them. I bought a second hand machine for home and so I stopped buying outside coffee until I had matched the cost of what I spent on the machine I bought (was only £40 but still). It's been a month and I don't use the machine much now buttt I buy less coffee outside because I have a machine at home - maybe a week.

I also second Greggs - they do a great mocha!

ceeveebee · 05/03/2018 18:41

I bought a Nespresso machine and a thermal cup so I take a large coffee with me to work and try to last the day without another one

Saz1995 · 05/03/2018 18:46

I have the same issue😂😂😂

DwangelaForever · 05/03/2018 18:48

I cured my habit by getting a job closer to home - not a coffee shop in site 😂

bonzo77 · 05/03/2018 19:08

Find a cheaper coffee place and skip the cake: bar of chocolate from corner shop instead. Cheapest option: 50p cookie + free coffee from Waitrose. Buy a re-usable cup too.

HRTpatch · 05/03/2018 19:12

Both sell crap coffee

Parker231 · 05/03/2018 19:16

I’m addicted too - I get one Mon- Fri when I come out of the tube. Happy to make changes to my lifestyle but changing my coffee habits isn’t one of them!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2018 19:37

I'm the same. Costa every morning st work and Caffè Nero's on my days off. Coffee then tea in the morning and another tea in the afternoon. It's my only vice so I don't mind spending the money. I hate staying at home.

MrsElvis · 05/03/2018 19:53

I was the same £5- £8 a day. Only a move away from a job surrounded by coffee shops stopped me

FeedtheTree · 05/03/2018 20:04

Go to Prets for a filter coffee with hot milk. Frothy, tasty and only 99p!

Passthecake30 · 05/03/2018 20:11

Small steps... cut out the cakes and then just 1 per day?

There are worse vices to be had in sureGrin

Laucu · 06/03/2018 06:26

My husband was the same. It drove me mad! But he has a very demanding job so I get it - I think I'd need more than 3 coffees a day if I tried to do what he does!

He bought an aeropress and makes his own coffee at work now.

Maybe a reusable cup and a coffee maker is the way forward for you - an aeropress is £30 so it'll only take you a week or two to get your money's worth!

confusedandemployed · 06/03/2018 06:33

I really don't get the coffee hype. I drink buckets of the stuff but have a thermal mug and make my own. Coffee shop coffee isn't hot enough. Just experiment with with coffee at home to find one you like.
I have a £70 espresso machine that makes amazing cappuccinos, espresso, mochas etc and I also have a favourite instant for when I can't be arsed.

NotLinkedInSnowedIn · 06/03/2018 07:06

I used to only feel relaxed in costa coffee. ever....
My life is under control now. I felt like I was living the dream when i had a coffee. For 10 minutes.

ElenaBothari · 06/03/2018 07:57

Buy a nespresso, a contiguous travel mug and a bag of frozen pastries. Make your pastry and coffee at home in the morning and take them with you?

specialsubject · 06/03/2018 11:49

blimey, the waste only is revolting - and you are going to get huge. Stop buying any cake if you can't control eating.

Aeropress, coffee grinder and £2.50 pack of beans - the latter lasts a week in this house. All the waste is compostable too. And you pay tax on it.

it isn't actually necessary to walk about with a coffee in your hand at all times. Wait until you get to work and use the kettle there.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/03/2018 16:06

Well they both do Shite coffee for a start off 😀

Do buy a grinder, aldi or lidl beans & an aeropress for nice coffees. Waitrose do different frozen pastries you can put in a paper bag from Homebargains for eating on the go.

When we went to dartmouth last year we visited an artisan coffee shop and had coffee like nothing else I’d ever drunk. So many different flavours in one cup. It was like drinking grand cru white burgundy after a lifetime of Lambrusco. They were empty though. Costa half a mile away was heaving. We just don’t appreciate decent coffee as much as we think.

Nicpem1982 · 06/03/2018 16:26

I have a travel cup and take one from home for my commute I totted my spend up and it was 85.00 a month I couldn't justify that
