Our grocery shop has started creeping up again. Today is 25th May and we have had 20 separate trips to the shops (mostly Tesco) and very few trips have been under €20.

We do use Lidl for a big shop but need to swap more things. At the moment we still use brand name mayonnaise, dry cat food, beans, tomato sauce & washing up liquid.

Is the Lidl version just as good? Is there anything you WOULDNT swap?

As someone who grew up on and around farms I am very proud of the fact that in comparison to many countries around the world, our meat and dairy industry is amongst the highest in welfare. There is no chance of meat and dairy process becoming exactly pleasant because any way you look at it, they have to die. Male chicks being killed straight away is a very sad element of the egg producing industry but I do understand why they get culled. What's the alternative? Raise them just to kill them later? So what difference does when they are killed make? I will not become vegan but I feel no shame in opting for the least cruel option thank you.

Tried doing most shopping at Aldi this month which has been a success, however still buy branded:

Crunchy nut cornflakes
Heinz less S & S ketchup (own brand was vile! So sweet)
Branded bread (warburtons, hovis etc)
Coffee (kenco smooth)
Oreo (for my ds)

I prefer my meat from the butcher or Costco. And FR eggs from the butcher are delish- so rich.

On a side note, I used to love Nescafé skinny cappuccino sachets but they've changed the recipe and now they taste awful. Have swapped to Aldi own brand, which still don't taste as nice as original Nescafé but cost a lot less.

The only household item I will not swap is washing powder/liquid and fabric softener, all other items I have swapped to Aldi, some are not as good but the difference in price is important to me so will make do in order to cut costs as much as poss, perhaps when spending under control I will return to some named brands........

Real butter, don't mind what brand
Handwash for my eczema prone mitts
Meat from the butcher, don't eat meat otherwise
Hellman's mayo. Have tried all the others, always gone back to Hellman's
Real coffee, don't mind what brand but prefer water method decaf
DP's fizzy pop, he won't have another kind
Organic milk, prefer Yeo Valley in support of farmers
Cleaning products, Bio D for preference as it's British & vegan
Lush makeup & toiletries for the same reason
Toilet paper, as long as recycled not bothered, although won't be buying the last brand I got a bulk order of online
Water wipes
Organic baby shampoo & conditioner, don't mind what brand

Everything else, the cheapest that works/ tastes the best
