Welcome JickJack. That sounds really tough. Frugal Ladies - how about sharing your absolute most important lessons learned about being frugal so JickJack can benefit from everyone's experience as soon as possible. I don't mean tips to save money, or things you wish you did do but don't, but what is the biggest thing you've learned that you'd pass on to someone setting out to be frugal?

Here's one thing I've learned is important:
If a family member offers to lend you money, take it, or if you have savings, spend them, if it means you will avoid having a debt that accumulates interest (credit card, overdraft).

NSD today. DP is making dinner Smile because I'm working this evening and DS was delightful today. Life feels pretty good. Even the "code brown" at bathtime tonight hasn't taken the edge off...

babsmam · 22/02/2015 19:39

I think there is no need to pay full price for stuff. There is usually a voucher or a discount somewhere for stuff.

CremeEggThief · 22/02/2015 19:41

We all do, Fuzz. I wanted to say that in my earlier post, but I didn't want to spoil the nice surprise for you Smile.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 22/02/2015 20:12

if you're entitled to benefits take them!

NK5BM3 · 22/02/2015 20:14

Great use mystic.
My tip would be to be able to tell the difference between need and want. Need the handbag or want the handbag? Need to eat it with fusilli pasta or can we eat spaghetti? Can we substitute the cheese in the recipe with some other cheese you have already in the house?

The last two questions would be things I constantly ask myself so as to stop myself from going to the shops to pick up x cheese or x pasta. Because we all know, we usually end up spending another £20 on things we didn't need!! Wink

midnightmoomoo · 22/02/2015 20:34

Thanks for the welcome. My tip is to change council tax payments to twelve monthly, for us the difference between ten payments and twelve covers the cost of the car insurance which we couldn't pay in one go like we used to.

I'm thinking about paying the council tax by 0% credit card in April, this would free up the cash which is what we're desperately short of. Just an idea at this stage though.

Passthecake30 · 22/02/2015 20:39

£11 at a naice garden centre for 11ses to kill time. ...feel v guilty but I had found a £10 note in my jeans and had a boiled water (free) instead of something else!

Made a bread pudding, 1st time ever, took 2hrs to firm up and now waiting for it to cool. Not sure how frugal if it takes that long to cook? ?!!

My mantra is similar to NK as in "do I/we really need it?"

lilacclery · 22/02/2015 20:41

jickjack my piece of advice is it is entirely possible to shop just once a week and not do topups....utilise your freezer and if you don't have a particular ingredient either do without or substitute.

spotty I meant I couldn't make it because I'd overeat it & I'm trying to lose weight!

best of luck with interview nk5

Laska42 · 22/02/2015 20:44

£16.15 in co-op today . ( thats why im down to my last £4 on my food budget ) .but as well as veggies eggs and dairy there was a was a 'good' chicken that ive poached in the slowcooker and which has made lots of Chinese-y flavoured stock.. I intend to restart my 5:2 regime this week and before found that chicken and veggie noodle-y soups are were the way to go)

Am Pleased with how my YNAB budgeting i has been working out ., im on month 4 now and have drastically reduced my spending, have paid off my credit card and now even have over £400 savings!!

(This is so unlike how i used to be having ended last year £3000 in debt and lots due to to this thread )

So Now im going to tackle what DH refers to my Nuclear Winter Store (NWS) GrinBlush

Im going to make a BIG confession here: I am a serious food and grocery horder and I have to stop and I'd like your support, so please dont ridicule me .. (I date this from many years ago when my first husband walked out and i was suddenly left with two week old baby and I went from having an ok life to relying on benefits .. However this is not my life now and i need to stop this madness)

So next month im going to try something different . I have gone through the stuff we have.. and I have just placed an online order with Waitrose (yes i know I can do much cheaper .. but having really good food - and Wine -at weekends is our 'thing' .. We dont eat out or go out much )

Have spent £125.00 but that includes 4 bottles of something good (on a good offer) and meat, dry goods and household stuff (everything is their 'essential' range). I have costed it against Sainsburys and bought nothing more expensive than there and have free Saturday delivery ..)

But have worked it all out carefully so that it all compliments what i have already in the NWS as I am determined to get it down

What I have bought should be enough to add to the exisiting bits and pieces of meat items too small to use in freezer and make them usable for a meal . Ill go to Sainsburys for the cat food ( My cat will only eat Whiskas ) and Persil which DH insists on , as its cheaper there. This - apart from a few bits of fresh veg and dairy - is going to be my food/ household things budget for next month

So....heres the confession . The true extent of my 'Nuclear Winter Store' ....

The Freezer inventory wasnt too bad , it produced: lamb chops/chicken legs and breasts/pork steaks and a couple of small packets of mince, some sausages, chicken livers and some random fish fillets and prawns . Plus a packet of smoked salmon and 2 packets of cheesy jalepeno bites left over from Christmas .. pittas, chinese pancakes , beans, peas and tons of blackcurrants ..).

But the Cupboards are bursting full of odd half used packets of rice. couscous, lentils etc as well as sauces, cereals , jams, honey etc and many tins of beans, fish, tomatoes etc as well as loads of jars and packets of our beloved Indian, Mexican and Chinese condiments and sauces .. (plus enough fruit, flour sugar and nuts to make several christmas cakes it seems..) .

The other Household cupboards have many and various cleaning things, probably bought for specific purposes and never used , s several packets of black and blue clothing dye (why?) lightbulbs , oven cleaner , enough bin bags to last us for years .. We have enough loo rolls to see us through several months .. it seem . I also have whole Welsh dresser base full of of jams chutneys and pickles ive made in the last few years
( not to mention a secret chocolate stash , that only I know about )

OK i admit it I AM a hoarder[blush blush bliush] ..

So Im planning that next month we will now actually start to use all the odds and ends and eat into some of the 'stores' .

midnightmoomoo · 22/02/2015 20:45

passthecake I have a chocolate chip bread and butter pudding recipe which is amazing.....I bought chocolate chips in lidl today so that might have to be made this week!

Agree with shopping once a week, we've got much better at this. Thanks for the tips, keep them coming!

Laska42 · 22/02/2015 20:59

JickJack Welcome , I feel a bit silly now posting about my hording excesses. .(which have manifested since i got out of benefits and back into earning ang being ok for money again ) but the hording was what got me into serious debt..(its not only food, im ashamed of my wardbobe also )

But one thing i learnt about being on the ropes (which i was when my son was young ) was that supermarkets discount at 5pm and again at 8pm , and you can get really good stuff for not much then .

Claim for everything you can and dont be afraid to ask fo rhelp.

You can manage on two meals a day (and tea for the rest of the time). Make sure you learn to cook (if you dont already ) make soups , eat porridge , and if you can eat veggies beans rice and lentils with the odd egg you will be fine Learn to cook Indian food ..its brillant and cheap ..

AuditAngel · 22/02/2015 21:01

Hello ladies, been AWOL for a few days.

Need I think your DH's guardian angel has been busy. I hope he doesn't suffer too much going forward from the accident.

Friday £3 meal deal for lunch, £54 for diesel bug can reclaim that.

Saturday £4.19 for late lunch in McDonalds after taking DD2 to a party. Dropped 5 sacks to the charity shop. I could have tried selling a few bits, but DH is moaning about the state of the house so I wanted to get them out. I am still trying to move the kids stuff to new bedrooms, but spent Saturday clearing DS's t-shirts drawer out, going through DD2's drawers and getting out the next size for her from the loft.

£3 church collections.

Today was almost NSD. £1 for socks for DD1 costume.

Need to get some scraps of fabric for one of DS's costumes, have called my niece to try to get them from her (manager in a fabric shop), also for the other boys as we need different colours.

I may have sourced another second hand costume for him, also one for DD2, so nearly there!

girliefriend · 22/02/2015 21:12

Catching up welcome JickJack that does sound tough. My frugal tip is only pay what you think something is worth, this might a bit huh? But what I mean is I have a budget for absolutely everything and will not pay more than what I think something is worth iyswim?! Also use shops like Poundland, Poundstretchers, Wilkos etc and know which of these has what cheapest Grin

Passthecake30 · 22/02/2015 21:39

Yummm bread pudding is goodSmile . ,Not going to be frugal as I ate a bit too much. Oink oink.

Forgot to mention persil non bio is £5.50 from £11 for a 45 wash box in tescos.

AdoraBell · 22/02/2015 21:52

Just catching up with my spends, will catch up with the thread in a day or Two.

So, shoes for DD2 - £30 ish, DH paíd while I was other wise occupied
Blazer for DD2 - £28
Materials -£12 still need To Get a couple of things
Books £38 still need another six

Tomorrow will be grocery shopping. I'm finding not having a freezer full of food oddly Calming, which is confusing given that I am a food hoarderConfused. Anyway, I plan To resist filling the freezers now as it's actually given me a chance To reset mentally. There will be lots of salads over the coming months and I have a little over a week úntil DDs start the new school year.

Hope everyone else is doing Well.

Laska42 · 22/02/2015 21:58

As well as good soup .. think good Bread.. I have a sourdough starter its about 20 years old now.. We make all our own bread these days .

Ok.. so it may not be cheaper than Lidl, but I think its its so much better and one loaf lasts us a week ....
Also see Bread and Wine's frugal, vegan cooking , baking blog

Laska42 · 22/02/2015 22:15

This is such a good book The Celebration of soup

1p! (+ postage) Dont bother with the updated version.. its pretty much the same

TeWiSavesTheDay · 22/02/2015 22:21

Spends over the weekend
£73.96 food
£7.99 dvd for the kids
£14.99/but actually a voucher so free, glue gun.

...that's it.

Really pleased with how well we've done so far this month.

Food hoarding - I can be guilty of this. One thing I try and do is deciDr a maximum number of x to have and then not buy anymore until I've used up enough to have less than that.

Laska42 · 22/02/2015 22:25

My top money saving tip is planning! I have been meal planning following advice on these threads and have saved loads. Have also been through the calendar and put together s monthly budget for birthdays, activities, clothes etc to minimise the nasty shocks. forewarned is forearmed and all that. I also try and avoid temptation so have unsubscribed from online newsletters, stopped buying magazines etc. Feel much happier now I am not being bombarded with things I can't afford.

Jar: £13.65 (was £30.95)

Spends:

£1.00 – bottle of diet coke.

Well I may have saved money on the FA Cup quarter final tickets by actually not being able to get hold of any. I'm so angry. To cut a long story short the club put them on sale to season ticket holders and asked that as many people as possible buy online to save queuing however the software couldn't cope and I myself was left in a 7 hour long online queue on my laptop only to find out they had sold out (as well as trying umpteen times on my phone as I had to go out and getting booted out of the website more than once). The club were also selling unlimited numbers to ST holders and in an online poll that a message board set up, it is estimated that 37% of ST holders didn't get tickets. So, we're dying to see what the club's answer to it is, because there are a lot of angry season ticket holders..

Also went to Iceland yesterday to check out the new range of SW meals. I really wanted meatballs and sausages however they had sold out by the time I got there so I had to settle for four ready meals and a packet of frozen chicken breasts - £14 on my food budget and to be honest I didn't really need them. I probably won't buy the ready meals again but I do miss sausages.

Also taking some leather cowboy boots that I have had for years to the cobbler to see if the heels can be repaired, I love them so much, bet it costs as much as a new pair of boots.

SpottyTeacakes · 23/02/2015 06:33

Wow laska! With your half packets of rice etc you could always do something saucy and one have rice the other have couscous.

I have to go into work today on my day off Angry also we've run out of ready brek which is not ok by the dc.

bantam that's appalling, you must be so disappointed. I hope the club sorts it out.
laska if you want to sort out the hording have a look at the kondo thread that several of us from here are on. Sorry I can't link on my phone. It is changing my life and fits together well with being frugal.
Another NSD yesterday for me and today should be too.
