It prompted me and I thought it would be fun to start our own thread Smile

Do have a look which utility providers/local councils provide free of charge. For example, our water company provides free water efficiency kits. Someones local council was providing free water butts or compost bins.

Only drink tap water.

Trills · 17/12/2014 20:34

The title pisses me off.

58. Always use carrier bags for bedroom and bathroom bins, rather than paying out for bin liners.

Do they really think nobody has EVER heard of that before?

sparklecrates · 17/12/2014 20:49

how do you stand on starbuck et al paying ZERO corporation tax in the uk?

Buddy80 · 17/12/2014 21:45

Trills I agree to an extent, but it's just a list that someone may find handy.

NoisyOyster · 18/12/2014 07:14

Regardless of starbucks et al stance on corporation tax, doesn't mean you can go and help yourself to "free" sugar. Two wrong don't make a right. Have some class for heavens sakes

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 08:36

I hope you ask shops to turn off the heating and lighting when you go in to stop you stealing the 'free' power...Hmm

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 08:41

Alas wetherspoons sauces now come in bottles. Sachet overuse is common and unused sachets left in tables are binned do taking those made sense even though the decanting was a pain, but taking a bottle is wrong so they have stumped that one. There's also the possibility of the odd free sausage or so in the spoons but as it's not predictible its not really a money saving tip..

You can also take a plastic box to Pizza Hut on unlimited salad day.. but overall its more costly than making your own food so it's only helpful if you happen to be in there for another reason.

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 09:57

Also those ends of toilet roll that get left in costa.. I whip them out and put them in freezer bags as handbag tissues..

sunshinemeg · 18/12/2014 10:08

I thought this was going to be a helpful honest thread about ways to save money, not ways to steal. I am not a thief, I won't take bits of toilet paper, or sugar packets, FFS if that desperate go to a food bank

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 10:13

Make it so! Stop arguing and criticising!
Ok how about 'dont buy tissues in silly packs, just get some thick toilet paper and put it in cheapo freezer bags or slightly embarrassing self sealing bags with canbabis leaves on from the market at £1 for 100

Buddy80 · 18/12/2014 10:13

I am tempted to start another thread. This was just a thread to share information on good ways to save some money, that's all!

OP posts:
NoisyOyster · 18/12/2014 10:15

Sorry op didn't mean to hijack your thread

You had good intentions Xmas Smile

NoisyOyster · 18/12/2014 10:17

just get some thick toilet paper and put it in cheapo freezer bags

As in, buy thick toilet paper, or steal it from another company who has to buy it themselves, sparkle?

Buddy80 · 18/12/2014 10:31

I know, I just wanted to share some money saving tips. All may not be lost, lets see if we can get the thread back on track Grin

Ok! mission accepted!
Don't lycra and yoga-top up. Share practice sessions with friends and wear what you want. pjs are fine
Get cheap thermals rather than pjs. £3 on market.
Pre make porridge in microwaveable pots for each person/each day.
Pre-coats lots of meat in flour and seasoning an then freeze. Saves hassle when making any stews etc and encourages home cooking.
Get good stewing meat eg lamb shoulder from a good butchers and use half.. Much deeper and richer flavour than the supermarket nitrogen packed version.
Go 50s. Cook cheapo in week and big protein and greens on Sunday.
Spotify don't record buy. Sell the cd player.
Wait an hour before buying anything. You will bore yourself out of most wasteful purchases.

NoisyOyster · 18/12/2014 10:43

Ok buddy

Well there's the Classic "save leftover wine into ice cubes trays for use in casseroles later". Followed by the shock "there's wine leftover??" Xmas Grin

My best tip is leave the oven open after using it when it's cooling down. Sends all the heat back into the house rather than back outside

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 10:51

Grow seeds from things. . You might save money you might not but it gets the Moat right.
Honestly cheap soap at 10p from Tescos/boots is fine for hands and body. You can get a year's worth for a £1. Do similar with basics on shampoo shower gel etc and have expensive for weekends. Makes weekends special and saves a couple of hundred a year.

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 10:52

Go 'boy' and clipper your head. Saves £500 a year. Ok I'll stop Grin

sparklecrates · 18/12/2014 10:54

Instead of fresh flowers in each bathroom every day try dried for a few months a year.

Buddy80 · 18/12/2014 10:55

Thank you sparkle great tips Grin

OP posts:
Buddy80 · 18/12/2014 10:55

Ha! Cheers Noisy for getting into the spirit of things, much appreciated Grin

OP posts:
Buddy80 · 18/12/2014 10:57

I have heard that you can grow certain types of flowers specifically for indoor use. You know, instead of buying bunches of flowers, there are types that can be grown for indoor use.

Maybe quite a frugal option, esp if you give flowers as a gift.

I will go off and have a look and see if there is a link that better explains than I am Grin

Instead of going for expensive speed dating sessions get an oven pizza and some wine and log into chat roulette. Dress your pc up in a tux if you like. ..oh I've said too much...

PigletInABlanketJohn · 18/12/2014 11:21

Make yourself a sandwich at home before you go shopping.
