Jacket Potato July: our frugal year is flying by!

CremeEggThief · 01/07/2014 16:27

Hi All,
I couldn't see a new thread yet, so thought I'd start one for July. The jacket potato is a marker for starting summer off on a frugal note. :).

NSD so far.

Not yesterday took a picnic to the park with a friend. Should be a Lot today. Going to playgroup this afternoon which is £1. Need to buy some aspirin as well. I could have been prescribed it for free as I'm pregnant but it felt a bit exploitive of the NHS as it's so cheap.

Cherrypi · 17/07/2014 07:29

NSD not not. My phone really didn't like that initialism. It's a conspiracy.

Iamnotanugget · 17/07/2014 07:59

cherry unless you're gp has ok'd it you shouldn't take aspirin while pregnant. I know what you mean though. A few years back I was given paracetamol as I was an in patient but worked for a chemist so could get it for pennies. I said I didn't want it but they said I had to take it as it had been prescribed. If I didn't it would be destroyed.

Hoping for a lsd.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/07/2014 15:21

£9 on a towel rail but I've had two lots of cashback this week so it's cost me pennies.

EnglishRose1320 · 17/07/2014 17:57

Was hoping for a LSD but had to fork out £270 on getting the car fixed- typically it was one of the few things the warranty didn't cover :(

Plus a small shop in Tesco- mostly stocking up on cheap ice lollies- because it is so hot today.

Should be a NSD tomorrow- hopefully

Passthecake30 · 17/07/2014 17:59

£3.20 on a subway for a roll and drink. Wouldve been £3.59 if I'd settled for just the roll......??!

I usually take lunch to work and put it in the fridge but I was at a course and I don't trust warm salad/sarnies. ..

SpottyTeacakes · 17/07/2014 18:58

They couldn't fix the car today as had to order a part. I need the car for work and dd's sports day tomorrow and I need it every day until next Wednesday. Petrol lights on and can't open the cap as it's all controlled by the central locking. Sucks to be me right now.

JimmyCorkhill · 17/07/2014 19:00

I have to admit that when I stumbled upon this thread I thought how easy it must be to have NSDs and that's how I generally live...I haven't had a single NSD yet Blush

£8.50ish in Aldi today. I forgot my list earlier in the week and this was all the bits I didn't remember to get. Yesterday I didn't leave the house but sent DH to collect a 2nd hand wardrobe for £20.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/07/2014 19:03

Dh is motor trade, some cars can over ridden by a tech, I'd ask the dealership to do it as a courtesy.

Modern cars are a pita with this sort of thing.

SpottyTeacakes · 17/07/2014 19:13

Thing is it's too late fluffy I have to leave at seven in the morning for work but I won't be able to go now so I will lose out on money.

EnglishRose1320 · 17/07/2014 19:28

Oh dear doesn't sound good Spotty- can any neighbours/friends help out? Does the cost of a taxi work out that you would be better off than losing a whole's days wages? I know when I was working it wouldn't have worked out because the nursery was in the opposite direction to work so taxis would have been super expensive.
Fingers crossed the part arrives soon

Jimmy- I thought I would have quite a few NSD's as well, monitoring my spending has been quite an eye opener

FantaSea · 17/07/2014 19:34

A good frugal day today - I got sent the letter for DD's prescription charges to be refunded so claimed my £16.10 back in asda and then spent £7 on bread and fruit, so in credit for a change Smile

Jimmy I know what you mean, NSDs are very rare!

AdoraBell · 17/07/2014 19:34

Spent another £10 on top up groceries. Eggs fruit and junk (biscuits, crisps and fizzy drink as DD2 is having a friend over) DD1 is going to her friends and taking a 500g packet of biscuits from the store cupboard. I buy those just for sleepovers, cheap and the DCs like them.

SpottyTeacakes · 17/07/2014 19:35

I'll have both dc so nothing I can do. Taxi would be £25 each way at least if I even manage to find a taxi firn locally who answer the phone this time of day. My parents can't help as my dad's off to Oxford and mil has a hospital appt.

EnglishRose1320 · 17/07/2014 20:12

Oh Dear Spotty, I was stuck trying to juggle getting my car back and swimming lessons and I was amazed and very pleased when the garage arranged to pick myself and DS's up from the leisure centre.

Hopefully you'll be able to at least enjoy a few work free hours- easier said than done I know.

Iamnotanugget · 17/07/2014 22:55

spotty your wedding dress is beautiful. I'd love to get married again. I loved everything about my wedding day. Hope you manage to salvage something from your enforced day off.

I walked to meet a friend today saving £2 bus fare but got a bus back as it's over 2 miles and I wanted to get back for ds' nap. Also spent £8.08 on school hair bits (not essential but I really want uniform shopping out the way), sun cream and stock cubes.

Tesco order arrived £58 which is fantastic if it lasts. I've bought a few extra bits too for spontaneous summer holiday day trip packed lunches.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather.

AuditAngel · 17/07/2014 23:37

£45 on diesel (on my expenses). Plus £3 for lunch. £54.80 for DD1's dancing costume. May have found a secondhand leotard to go with it (not sure what they'll want, but less than new) £15 on take away dinner for 3 after a 9 pm finish from Joseph rehearsal.

rideyourbike · 17/07/2014 23:52
Smile
AuditAngel · 18/07/2014 07:12

I'm now a bit worried about the jeans I bought DD for the show. I was told blue jeans, no jeggings. So bought Gap skinny jeans which were in the sale (actually they were the first sale pair I found that fitted her). They are now saying no skinny jeans. May go to Tesco after drop off this morning. Worst comes to worst, she can wear a pair of DS's!

Cherrypi · 18/07/2014 07:48

Don't worry nugget consultant told me to take it but thanks for your concern. Spent more than I meant to yesterday. Should avoid supermarkets. Treated myself to flowers. Resisted a magazine but then saw a grey cardigan in the shade I've been after for a year. Then lovely husband comes home with a bunch of the same flowers. Bought a few books in the Kindle sale this morning too.

lilacclery · 18/07/2014 14:01

I'm going to pretend I didn't know kindle have a sale as I've three unread books purchased lately & 3 from library unread also.

Spends today literally just the tesco food shop and signed up for monthly saver too

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/07/2014 14:10

£5 fuel
£41 aldi
£3 lidl.

Frugal win, got £9 for towel rail refunded onto my card and paid using my gift voucher instead & then picked up a stray receipt in the car park at aldi so I can claim 50p back for it on checkoutsmart.

SpottyTeacakes · 18/07/2014 17:37

£7.50 three hot dogs and pimms at sports day

JimmyCorkhill · 18/07/2014 17:54

I failed again Blush £6ish in Greggs but it wasn't for meeeeee! I was too lazy to make lunch

NK5BM3 · 18/07/2014 18:52

£3.50 at mcdonalds because it was warm and dd wanted an ice cream which then turned out that actually she wanted the bloody toy.

£12 at Claire's accessories for hair stuff for her ballet show tomorrow, and a present for one of her friends' birthday.

£7 at primark for another kid birthday and some hair stuff, although I will return one of them coz I've got extra.

Will go into town tomorrow to return that hair thing at primark and get a mini donut for her hair and another hair net.

Now I have no idea what to cook for dinner. It's too hot!!
