Has anyone given in and flicked the heating on yet? Getting chilly here, but trying to hold out!

Numpty, any idea how much they cost to run?

given in - managed so far with fire in living room but came in today shivering and could not get warm so flicked heating on - but kept it as low as possible I had wanted to wait until October ideally.

Katy, lakeland aired costs the same as a lightbulb to run. It's fantastic!

Nope, holding out to Nov 1st as my target. Still hanging things out to dry in the wind and then warming them through in the airing cupboard, but we also have a dehumidifier which helps dry washing indoors in the winter. For personal warmth, I've dug out and washed all our proper thermals, and winter hats and gloves. I spent about ÂŁ30 on two sets of thermal long sleeve tops and long johns last year and wear them under normal clothes pretty much every day when it really starts to bite. We also bought a cheap 4.5 tog single duvet to have on the sofa, and proper fleece pyjamas. I also wear proper ski socks over ordinary ones when I'm in the house, or those Heat Holder thermal tog ones. I do need a better pair of slippers though.

Someone on here recommended Primark uggs as slippers. Very cosy apparently.

I'm wearing Primark Uggs as slippers now! My feet get so cold quick.
I swear I have Raynauds.
I'm currently sporting a fetching shade of purple on my fingers even though the rest of me is toasty warm.

We caved in a few days ago. No fire only radiators and only in the day, not at night. Dc2 has had a nasty cold and its around 16o in the mornings. He pulls at his babygrow as he is so used to being in just a baby vest throughout summer, and isnt comfortable. so set at 19o its ok for the little guy to wander about in his vest.

I am hoping to not get too used to the radiators (esp for drying clothes) but once dc is fully recovered they will be turned off again.

I came home from work today. Dd was home first. The house was like a sauna

Yep, first put it on a few days ago. Only for an hour or two at a time. And we are southern softies too!

No but I have no choice as the boiler is broken! Just getting quotes to fix it. I am hoping not to put the heating on for some weeks yet but it is quite cold and I do worry about the little ones being cold in the night - although I grew up in Scotland with no central heating or double glazing and one coal fire in the living room and managed to survive!

Put it on tonight for an hour and it felt wonderful Smile. Am full of cold atm so that's my excuse. Am in pretendy Uggs, jumper, hot water bottle and blanket and am still a bit chilly.

We actually can't put ours on, as we started renovating the kitchen in the summer, which involved taking the radiator off the wall. Said wall still isn't wallpapered, which means raidator can't go back up, and until that happens we can't put heating on at all!

Given that we only have time to work on the kitchen at weekends, and there's still tons of stuff to do, it might be October before we get our heating on...

I don't mind putting on extra jumpers and snuggling on the sofa under a blanket, but getting out of bed in the morning and stripping off the get in the shower or get changed is horrible in the cold!

I put some underfloor hearing on yesterday which was nice.

Yes, on here. It comes in for an hour every morning and then it comes on at 6pm. Thermostat set at 20.

I put it on whenever I want to. I hate being cold. I have got a lovely thick blanket for the bed though.

Nope! Modern flat, good insulation. Probably would have had it on in my old house!

No, trying to wait it out, very tempting but im too frugal to put the heating on in september, it just doesn't feel right!.I live in an old , large , cold house despite being super insulated it's always cool, even in summer.

cozietoesie · 21/09/2013 12:31

I'm normally cool in summer but this one was so hot that the house (also old and large (ish)) heated up right through - 25 degrees at nighttime in the downstairs rooms. It's starting to cool off now though so I'm going for the odd hour morning and evening.

Not here. We are toasty warm though with duvets on the sofa and snuggled up close. We are lucky that we have warm-ish clothes, slippers and hot water bottles but even with boiling hot water bottle waters for the night, it's worked out cheaper. Smile

Yes, thermostat set at 20. 1.5 hrs in morning and 6-9 at night. Is kicking in for about half that time. I have ice-like hands and feet, doesn't matter what I encase them in.
I have an electricity monitor which is useful for us all with things like only boiling actual water needed in kettle, switching off lights in rooms etc.

20 isn't that hot in this house, thats what we have it on and still wear jumpers. Depends on where you place thermostat. We've had our heating on for a few weeks morning and evening but for the last couple of days it's been warm enough not to kick on. ..yay

Not yet, it has been mild here for the last few days though.
