How much is your monthly gas/elec direct debit?

82 replies

DTisMYdoctor · 02/06/2013 09:03

We've just had a letter from EON confirming our direct debit is going up to £107 per month. It's been a good five years since I compared providers, so I will have a look, but I just wondered what other people were paying these days?

We're in a good sized 3 bed mid terrace with gas central heating.

I did energy assessments at Uni.

Do you;

have energy saving lightbulbs? How many are turned on at one time?
leave the TV/video on stand by?
Some older microwaves use a lot of electricity when they are plugged in (I know, sounds crazy but they do), try unplugging it.
How old are your appliances?
Are items unplugged when not in use or just switched off? Try unplugging them.

Heating/hot water;

You only need your hot water on for an hour a day, enough to fill a tank.
If you're using the cooker then use it to cook enough meals for two days and microwave them as this will save gas.
Most heat is lost through the windows and doors so use heavy curtains and draught excluders.
Heat goes up so make sure there's adequate loft insulation. You can also stick foil onto a piece of cardboard and slide this down the back of the radiators as this will stop the heat going into the wall.
Don't place anything in front of a radiator as it will prevent the heat from flowing properly.

happy mine was 1200 still owed as wellas paying 70 a month dd. we were paying 58 electric and were in credit.

I'm going to ask if I can still pay 70 a month and 50 a month from my other bank account to clear the debt and then hopefully over the summer some of the 70 a month will cover it too.

I don't think I've ever had a thread with so many replies Grin

Thanks everyone for posting - I'll have a proper read later, though a quick skim seems that we're not doing too bad. I'm not sure if we've given a reading for a while though so will need to check our bill vs actual usage.

4 bed detached house £135 a month for gas and electricity, but we have solar panels and we get rebates so we often pay £45 a month.

£85 a month for both, 3 bedroom mid terrace.

It used to be £10 less, but they have put it up.

We seem to get a rebate every couple of years as they always overestimate.

For those of you who rent has your landlord done anything to make the house more energy efficient?

We pay £250 per month, 5 bed detached, no cavity walls.

DH likes it sub-tropical but I pay the bill so we change the thermostat!

Due to the hours we keep, we have the heating on all the time as either someone is in, or only a couple of hours at a time empty.

We're with EDF. For some reason all payments were put on gas account and none to electric. I was actually owing about £30 at the end of last winter (overall) but they wanted to increase DD by about £100 a month. When I talked it all through with the advisor, he reallocated the payments and left the payments the same. I haven't checked recently........

£43 a month elec (just gone down from £46) with Good Energy, and £18 a month gas with Southern Electric. 2 bed terraced house, gas ch and cooking, a fair bit of elec as dh is home all day.

We aren't bad on our energy use as we did a thing called the Low Carbon Living Programme, but tbh it's not rocket science. Good Energy have always been v low for us, worth checking out? I think people assume that because they are 'green' (relatively) they must be 'luxury'. Not our experience.

Holy crap you people all seem to pay a fortune! We pay £58 per month on dual fuel, with EON. We're in a fairly modern 2 bed terrace but the landlord doesn't give a shit about keeping it in good condition as long as we pay the rent. This is my experience of all landlords BTW. I'm sure there are some good ones out there but I've not had one of their houses. The gas safety certification is months out of date & I'm sick of ringing them about it.

Sorry to derail by the way. And breathe.

£60 per month. 3 bed semi.

We work from home, but switch energy supplier every year via uswitch - it has saved us a fortune!

Ovo energy, gas and electric £84 per month in a 4 bed house. 4 people and one of us working from home. Two teenagers taking baths and running the washing machine on all day just aboutIts a terrace which makes a bit of difference I think with sharing walls and heating it. We ditched the dryer and now hang out the washing on the line too as it eats the energy.

Make sure you ask for a rebate of any credit due you on a regular basis too. They'll be likely to hold on to it unless you ask for it back.
