So, the credit crunching team are into Year 2013. Happy New Year everyone.

Let's continue our cost-cutting, , money saving, penny and pound pinching, NSD ways.

HearMyRoar · 17/01/2013 15:49

Today I have spent:
£8 at health food place on porridge, eggs and peanut butter
£7 at pound shop of various bits and bobs
£8 at the veg stall on 2 bags of fruit and veg
£2 at sainsburies on some humous (though I might have to go back and buy some biscuits as we are all out and I do like a couple with my hot chocolate after dd has gone to bed)
So total = £25

Not to bad really. That should be food covered for the next few days at least so aiming for another nsd tomorrow. I have just remembered that I have a free coffee on my work cafe loyalty card so if it's really snowing I might treat myself to a free mocha :)

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/01/2013 16:27

I like most things from aldi. Mil is a food snob but even she asks for seconds when she comes to our house for tea. I love the toro loco rose wine, didn't think much of the prosecco though.

I use caustic soda from homebargains etc for drains, one pack in a bucket of cold water will clear drains etc, you have to be carefull with it but its the active ingredient of things like mr muscle. I think sodium hydroxide is its chemical name.

Got my cheque from pizza ristorante for my try me free if you don't love me promo. £1.37 woo hoo.

The Pantene mask I used was brilliant! My hair feels like it used to with aveda damage remedy. I need to see where is cheapest to buy Pantene, probably savers.

Nearly bought shoes last night, still might today.

Nsd, so far.

Thatsinteresting · 17/01/2013 19:23

Came so close to having a nsd but when I went to collect dc1 from school it was suggested that school would be closed tomorrow due to snow. I couldn't face trying to get out in horrible weather with the children so nipped into Sainsburys for a couple of essentials but bought totally unnecessary cupcake, 89p chocolate bars on offer, £3. I've redeemed myself by picking up reduced stuff for sandwiches that I'll freeze, some reduced marmalade oranges that I'll cook on Saturday and some reduced carrots and coriander that are simmering away becoming soup right now.

Storm- You made me laugh. We had mystery meal tonight too. I had bread, potatoes, pasta and rice all waiting to be cooked when I finally worked out what it was! Turned out it was a sort of dry-ish stew so went well with rice.

Jen- Glad to hear your Grandad is doing ok.

Have booked myself a contact lens check as it's free while I'm part of their payment plan. Once I get the ok I'm going to leave the scheme and shop for lenses online. They're so expensive. I know I could wear my glasses more but I find them annoying.

I'm inspired by everyone's efforts. Thank you.

Mum2Fergus · 17/01/2013 19:36

Another NDS for me today, and had an Ebay sale for just over £10...that stays in the house move pot. Not so positive on the car front...needs a new drive shaft Hmm once DS settles I'll dig out warranty. All going well I'll have it back tomorrow...DP will drop DS at nursery in morn and I can work from home.

Ive a 0% CC where deal is due to end soon so thinking of applying for another before house move...

Leilandri · 17/01/2013 20:20

£6.95 in Morrisons today on squash, cola, eggs, bananas and bread flour.

Supposed to get heavy snow in the early hours of tomorrow morning here, but fading away during the afternoon. I hope so, DS1 has only seen snow once, DS2 never. Would be lovely to get out in it, also easy to have a NSD if too occupised playing in snow Grin

Jen hope your Grandad continues to improve x
MrsFrugal I love Aldi. I do a 30 mile round trip once a month to our local one as I love it that much! Usually spend in the region of £130 when I go (including nappies) they are shortlisted to come to our town, but it's been 2 years and we're still waiting Sad

Mum2Fergus · 17/01/2013 20:45

Pay day tomorrow not Monday...result!! Grin

1stMrsFrugal · 17/01/2013 20:58

Well I'm enjoying the Aldi Bordeau Blanc (£4.19) and prawn crackers (DH plays footie on a Thursday so I watch TV and drink wine while he's out Grin)

Helena I'm intrigued by frozen cabbage. If I buy a whole cabbage I find it a bit of an effort to eat it all, so being able to eat just a bit at a time is attractive. Let me know what it's like!

SheWhoMustBe there are still some very good fixed deals on energy switches about - do you have the best deal? Sorry if you're already all over this, but I recommend a look at moneysavingexpert and if you do switch, make sure you look for cashback deals. I got £70 last year for switching and fixing.

Welcome to all newcomers/delurkers. I have only just arrived myself and am finding everyone very supportive and helpful Smile

Thank you so much for all the good luck for my interview. I must do lots of prep this weekend. I've just received the details - 3 hours to include a tour of the school, lunch with the team I'd manage, 2 interviews back to back (one with 3 people, one with 2, all people in senior management team) and then a written test! Slightly terrified....

northender · 17/01/2013 21:31

Have just spent money on dh's lunch at work (he's allowed on a Thursday as they do a fab roast for £2.50!) and petrol. The car has had to stay in the garage as they haven't found out what's wrong with it yet. Am now worried that it is going to be something more serious and of course expensive.
ds and dd want a couple of new (to them) games for the playstation so I've listed some ds games on ebay for them to fund the "new" ones. It's good to be teaching them money management too.

AdoraBell · 17/01/2013 22:21

MSD here (that's a mega spend day), I went and paid for our holiday.

So, roads -£1.20
Holiday - £4,000, flights, half board and 6 days of excursions in the southern most region of Chile, with a hop across to Arenginta too. Pricey but much needed in order to save sanity.
Winter clothes for DDs, including vests that will last through the school year, for our trip -£170

Tomorrow will be an NSD

We're only putting 2 dogs in kennels, friend can drop in daily to check and feed the adult dogs.

Jenduck I hope your grandad has a comfortable night.

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/01/2013 22:51

Darn, the nsd went south when I realized I needed after school snacks for the DCs. That is so often my downfall and I end up popping into Tesco and getting some crap. I keep meaning to bake supplies of fairy cakes and biscuits.
1stMrs I will check out fuel deals, thanks for the reminder.

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/01/2013 23:11

Ha just checked the comparison site for fuel and am recommended to stay with my current supplier, albeit on a different tariff. So that's a phone call to make tomorrow.

roguepixie · 18/01/2013 07:22

Good Morning Everyone! Are we braced? For the snow, of course? Grin Am in London so have just sent DS off to school and have now started the stressing over when he will be able to leave school/will they let them out early/is the train going to be held up or cancelled etc etc etc. Have put extra money in his wallet, a bottle of water and some fruit/nut mix and a small bar of chocolate in his bag ... just in case.

jenduck, am so glad your DGrandad is making progress and is on the mend. I hope he continues to feel better. What a horrible, stressful time for you and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers and here, {{{have a very un-MN'y hug}}}

Fluffy, good luck with the shoes ... not sure whether to hope you buy them or not Grin.

Also, with regards to intensive conditioners - if you have any left over ordinary conditioners then, if you have an afternoon/evening at home slightly wet your hair, put conditioner on and wrap in towel (or not) or tie it up. Leave it for as long as possible then, when ready, wash out. Leaves it lovely and soft and uses up left over conditioner.

northender, hope you get the games you want. Good idea to sell off old ones and it really does teach them that (1) you need to fund purchases and (2) not to have hoards of stuff so de-cluttering too ... win-win Smile.

Adora, that's a fairly spendy day, you are right. Still, the holiday is paid for.

On the subject of frozen veg ... back in the day my DMum and DDad used to grow quite alot of veg etc in the garden (they grew up in the war and both were used to growing food). It used to be common practice to preserve foods by all sorts of means - pickling, in oil (common on the continent - have lovely recipe for preserving mushrooms if anyone is interested?), and blanching. This can be done with many veggies. Bring a pan of water to a rolling boil, have a large bowl of very cold water nearby. When water of boiling plunge veggies into water, keep there for one of two minutes, take out of water and plunge into icy cold water. Remove when cold and drain. Dry if necessary, put in baggies and freeze. When you need them just cook as normal. Sorry if you already know this ... am reading boffins austerity book and loads of things are coming back to me - stuff my DParents used to do as common practice and measures we used to take just because it made sense to act that way.

Am going to walk down to the station to meet him later and will pop into the butcher on the way. Want to buy sausages, bacon, mince and chicken ... will take my backpack so I don't have bags dangling off me Grin.

I hope everyone has a great day and are not too inconvenienced by the weather. I will be watching the weather, stressing over my guys getting home and knitting DS his stripey socks.Smile

jenduck · 18/01/2013 08:24

Thanks everybody for your well wishes & prayers. Dgrandad seems to be slowly improving (said very tentatively!). He is now under lighter sedation & can turn his head towards voices he recognises. They hope to bring him out of sedation today, but this in itself is a very delicate procedure, as one has to hope the patient does not have an over-exuberant reaction of any sort, as this would risk the stitching.

We are nearly out of bread & milk & with snow forecast until Tuesday at least (Essex), I want to go to Tesco to stock up on these & a few other essentials whilst DS1 is at pre-school & before it starts snowing (impossible to push a pushchair, I find). Will probably have to take bus back, which will add £1.20 or so to bill. Supposed to be going to see friend this afternoon but will likely cancel if weather bad, as would be walking.

Sounds like a few of us have car troubles atm. Hope they are all not too expensive & easily fixed.

I freeze just about any food. I don't bother with blanching veg first, although I know I should. But root veg goes well in a casserole/pie whether frozen or fresh. I also pretty much always pick up veg at 50% or less at supermarket reduction times - more often than not, it keeps for at least another week after its best before date.

Iam when you ring your fuel suppliers, try the 'I'm leaving you if you don't give me a better deal' tactic - they may give you even more off!

Hope everyone has a good day & enjoys the snow, rather than being incovenienced by it! Is anybody here in Wales, as I notice there is a red alert for snow there, which is apparently rare Shock. If so, stay safe.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 18/01/2013 13:33

Jen good news about your GD improving, long may it continue.

Fluffy what's the mask called, please? It sounds just the thing for my frazzled hair!

Adora your holiday sounds incredible. No holiday for DS and I this year, unless I have a major reversal of fortunes. I don't mind too much as I'd rather get the debt paid off then save for a holiday once that's gone.

I spent £3 on ebay yesterday, on a little gift for DS but I'm planning on today being a NSD. Still a week until payday - seems like the longest month ever. I'm sure the earth's orbit round the sun slows down in January...

economymode · 18/01/2013 13:42

As always, lots going on on this thread! I'm lurking a bit at the moment as have had a last minute bit of work (was planning on going on maternity leave from Monday (39 weeks) but not looking likely) and have a tantruming, teething toddler to contend with when not doing the data entry task of doom.

Jen, sorry to hear things have been rough, but sounds like your grandad is heading in the right direction now.

Spending-wise we're doing well-ish. Just the usual on playgroups and Aldi really. We've had our final gas and electricity bills (paid the gas, electricty will come out at the end of the month) so as of next month we're just on DD payments.

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 18/01/2013 13:44

Hurrah! Phoned Southern Electric and have signed up for a discounted deal, monthly direct debit, paperless bills and have combined my outstanding £550 bills into the DD over the next year. DD will be £147 pcm and I should get a £50 cash back within three months even though the cash back offer of £100 was only meant to be for new accounts.
Am so relieved we don't need to shell out the £550 in a lump this month.
Thank you so much for prompting me to do it.

jenduck · 18/01/2013 15:15

Dgrandad is awake! Still in a state of confusion, doesn't know what day it is but neither do I, but awake & sitting up Smile

In other news, spent just over £15 at Tesco on essentials (bread, milk, yoghurts, bananas etc) & a birthday cake for DH & our friend to share, as we are going out for a joint birthday lunch tomorrow. Was rather Shock though to have my trolley barged out of the way by a lady pensioner, because I was waiting for somebody else to move their trolley, as they had parked it rather awkwardly. I hate bad manners, but find they rarely belong to teens to whom they are often attributed.

economy take it easy a little! I know it isn't easy in your situation (worked at home until 40+2, I think, with 2.3 year old DS), but this may be the last chance you get for some rest!

Iam great news on your energy bills.

AdoraBell · 18/01/2013 16:14

That's great news Jenduck I'm sure the confusion is due to the sedatives, don't worry about it.

Oh yes, I remember many a pensioner being aggressive with supermarket trolleys, elbowing other shoppers out of the way etc when I lived in the UK. And at bus stops too.

Softkitty DDs are so excited they've already packed, we don't go for another 4 weeks!

CremeEggThief · 18/01/2013 17:05

Fab news, Jen, and hope you have a super holiday, Adora :).

I'll read through properly later. Today's spend- just under £20, on travel, some food shopping and after-school/ pre-swimming snack. Oh and £48.63 on online Sainsburys order, but that won't come out until the middle of next week.

roguepixie · 18/01/2013 17:16

jenduck, so glad to hear your DGrandad is awake. Wonderful news.

Adora, don't ask me why but I was thinking your holiday would be for August ... not thinking that it's your summer now, isn't it? I hope you enjoy it and you all have a great rest. Grin at DDs already packed.

Wanted to stop in at the butcher's today, on way to pick up DS but he wasn't open. Drat. Still, it has resulted in a NSD here for me. Smile

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2013 17:53

That's such good news Jen, he must be exhausted after his op though.

Kitty, I was using this mask which is £3 in Asda or possibly £2.24 in Tescos. I've always been dismissive of Pantene in the past. The good thing about cheaper masks is that you can use them more often. There's an overnight spray in the same range so I'll be trying that too. I will report back with my findings because I haven't got a project and I'm bored. Or boring as Dh would say.

Don't forget to ring BT if you use them, ask when you can leave and speak to disconnections. £6 a month off the bill is what they usually offer.

Lidl have 99p haggis! Dh won't eat it but I love haggis. Don't forget to check for their weekend half price offers, I think blocks of cheese figure this week but I can't remember the others.

£10 today on a top up shop today just in case I can't get to Aldi on Sunday. It puts this weeks grocery spend totally over budget.

HearMyRoar · 18/01/2013 19:12

Came so close to having an nsd but was foiled by a terrible snow related disaster. I had waited all morning and finally decided the time was right to have my free coffee so traipsed down to the cafe only to find they were closed due to no staff turning up in the snow. I was so devastated I had to go buy myself a twix to sooth my aching soul. So that was a 60p spend today.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 18/01/2013 21:23

Thanks Fluffy, I'll look out for that.

I'm going to have to pop to the supermarket tomorrow. I can't be bothered to go in the car to Aldi so I'll pop down the road to Asda or Tesco. I'm lucky to have small branches of each about five minutes walk away.

BoffinMum · 18/01/2013 22:13

Unexpected tax bill
It's like picking up the wrong Community Chest card. Sad

BoffinMum · 18/01/2013 22:14

roguepixie I am glad the book is proving useful! Grin
