How much have u spent in total for Christmas? I'm thinking about starting saving for next yr and just wondered how much people actually spend? I know I spend more than I think cause I buy bits over the yr, but in total, for everyone for everything inc food, drink and night out we have prob spent 600! Which is mental, and will be coming down next year!

I spent around £180ish on presents for 20 people. I set a £10 limit per person, some came under the £10 limit. I brought presents throughout the year. I also brought gift tags last year in the Boots 75% off sale.

I had to spend £1.99 on top up wrapping paper after the free roll I got last year (free when purchasing something from Sports Direct) ran out!

£30 tickets home to hubby's mums - booked in 2 weeks advance to save money :)

Hubby and I spent around £20 on M&S food and cava for our own little Xmas dinner a couple of days before Christmas.

All done by cash :)

THANK YOU Ruby! We pick up the ring on Jan 18! We are so excited! I didn't put it up there for 'congratulations', it was an honest (and insane!) spending for us this Christmas, but the fact that only ONE person said congratulations tells me all I need to know about MumsNet. I guess many sit at home with kids and a 0.2-carat ring.

If anyone replys now, I know I am correct! Tall Poppy Syndrome in the UK??? CUT IT DOWN!!!!! ha!!!!! xxxxx

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 05/01/2012 13:04

O good lord. Listen to you. It's nothing to do with tall poppy syndrome , because no one has made disparaging comments about you ,or resents you .
Maybe some people just feel that spending £6000 on a ring is obscene . I do . It's a personal opinion not a criticism !
I would be cross if my DH spent that on a ring. I would want a great proportion of that to go to a charity of some illness/ event that had affected mine or any one of my family's life .
And no I'm not envious .
I have a beautiful one of my own.

JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh · 05/01/2012 16:38

I'm really glad for you that you're excited about your engagement, and getting your ring Angel - it's just I'm not sure it's really part of the cost of Christmas is it ? Perhaps it is for you and your DP since it was his present to you !

Christmas for me is more about spending time with those I love, which involves a bit of travel and a few pressies all round. Perspectives change once you have DCs to think about !

Kellogg · 05/01/2012 18:24

Angel I am not sure why you want congratulating about a ring , it is not hard you walk in a shop and hand over money. No one congratulated anyone else on their purchases . An engagement ring is not really a Christmas expense. I am sure if you had started a thread announcing your engagement, which is something to be proud of I am sure lots of warm wishes would have been shared.

Your comment about the 0.2 ring and sitting at home reveals a rather unpleasant side to your character.

Angel, you sound completely bonkers!

You post something about an expensive engagement ring at MIDNIGHT, then at 2am you moan that only one person has congratulated you, and therefore judge everyone on Mumsnet as a result?!

OK, congratulations!
It must be lovely to have loads of disposable income!

But to sneer at those who do not have as much cash, and belittle those who "sit at home with kids" makes me wonder why on earth you would join Mumsnet in the first place.

vmcd28 · 05/01/2012 21:09

OH, and probably most people here have been or are currently engaged. Yes, it is a massive deal, but not uncommon. It's not all about you. Confused

Methe · 05/01/2012 21:11

Oh Angel. Showing off is ugly. No-one likes a poser.

Oooh, this is a show your true colours thread, isn't it.

Driftwood999 · 06/01/2012 23:52

Why is AngelAtTheTopOfTheTree a wind up? If you read her post carefully, she states the ER is "a ridiculous amount", but that's their business. They have to travel to see family/folk during the season, which yes, can extend to February when the weather is a bit less hot I guess. If they live within their means, that's good.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 07/01/2012 04:33

Driftwood I don't think anybody cares about what Angel spent at Christmas . What people take exception to is her attitude.

oksonowwhat · 08/01/2012 15:19

and also that she complained two hours after posting that she had had no congratulations....in the early hours!!! How weird!!!

I don't actually read all the posts i skim sometimes, only picked up on Angels post when i noticed people keep mentioning her name...

JugglingWithSnowballs · 08/01/2012 16:45

Actually I think it might have been a day or so later that Angel started complaining about the lack of congratulations. Am I right about that ?

oksonowwhat · 08/01/2012 21:23

Oh rightSmile Once again i skimmed and didn't read all the thread!

JugglingWithSnowballs · 08/01/2012 22:02

Don't worry about it - someone did say that was what had happened - it's just I noticed the dates were different.

< Too much time on my hands ? Who me ?? Blush >

vmcd28 · 09/01/2012 00:06

I stand corrected - apologies. It was a couple of days later. My original points still stand tho - this post isn't all about Angel. Slagging off people who can't afford a 6k engagement ring on a thread that's got nothing whatsoever to do with that is frankly bizarre

Anyway....Smile How are we all getting through the month then? Been bloomin hard here!! I knew it would be a tight month even though i really did try not to over spend tooooo muchSmile

We are just eating basics, pretty boring but its getting us through. No trips out and definately no wandering round the shops because thats just temping/depressing!!

Pay day for me is the end of the Month.....

JugglingWithSnowballs · 12/01/2012 11:45

Not great here .. but we did have a very enjoyable Christmas this year.

May have to raid a savings book I came across hiding somewhere recently ...
and probably need to jack up efforts to get a new job Smile

vmcd28 · 12/01/2012 12:13

I wont be getting thru the next few months very well. I'll be trying to do overtime too. :(

giveyourselfashiny · 15/01/2012 18:01

Well we are skint! But not in debt.

OP posts:
oksonowwhat · 16/01/2012 21:54

Ah all similar to me then, that helpsGrin

I'm totally skint but getting by...... pay day is the end of Jan can't come soon enough!! Although not got much overtime in so it won't be a big pay packetSad

Funny how you get used to not being able to spend a penny isn't it, well maybe not funny as suchSmile
