No spend January?

corinewmoon · 27/12/2011 11:43

After he festive blowout and considering ive got some big bills in January, (MOT, car tax, insurance) I have decided to try a no frivlous spending month. There is nothing i really need to buy, (apart from new school jumper and coat for DS) .
So I will be taking my lunch to work every day,
I will avoid costas,
and i will limit my self to one bottle of wine per week
I will aim to spend £200.00 on food shop for the month
I will not go for leisurely stroll to the shops during my lunch break.

Any one else want to join in. ?

Sorry, Bossy, my remark up thread was to Boffin, not you.

Have just taken the DC out to a museum (free). Wouldn't buy them anything in the shop or take them to the cafe, so the only expense was the parking (£1.60). A cheap afternoon out Smile.

dublindee · 08/01/2012 17:27

Have been lurking the last 2-3 days reading the whole thing from start to finish. Please may I join in?
Expecting DS3 at end of March and just took voluntary redundancy last month from job. Hubby is now sole earner and is happy for me to stay home with boys as long as we can afford it comfortably. To that end my redundancy pay is being allocated to clearing as much of our debts as possible and I've done a meal planner.

My boys don't get full - they get tired eating. Aged 7 & 5.
Went to do weekly food shop yesterday with strict list and spent £74.15 which included some store cupboard restocking. Felt very virtuous. Only other spend this month was £48 petrol and £36 on 3 small shops before reading this thread and deciding to go the weekly route.

With what is in our freezer I reckon I won't need to shop properly for a good 10 days maybe more (apart from milk and fruit). Please help keep me on the straight and narrow!!!!

Bossybritches22 · 08/01/2012 17:28

Sorry to contradict re; the essential oils folk, I am a trained clinical aromatherapist so not talking old wive tales here!

Yes as a general rule you should always put essential oil in carriers such as cream or good quality massage oil.

However pure lavender and tea-tree oil CAN be applied neat as long as you use a good quality one, its the crap in the cheaper ones that causes irritations. They are the two I always recommend to be kept in your bathroom cupboard. Burning oil are not usually pur enough for skin use Lady H, the clue is in the labelling, if it says "pure essential oil" then it has been distilled, if it is an "Absolute" it is extracted using alcohol and therefore more irritant.

Boots do a range called Botanics which is good quality & economical as one bottle lasts ages.

Wow, this is great. No spending today. Made 2 2lb loaf cakes leftover dates, walnuts (shells everywhere), other bits of dried fruit and on the turn bananas. Leftover beef from the freezer for lunch, ciabatta pizza (with tomato paste, cheese, bits of bacon and onion from the freezer, bread was 10p in M&S) for tea with canned fruit and ice cream. Meals planned for the week from cupboards and freezer. Downside is £120 due next week for ballet lessons but ho hum, it's what they love. Bids are up to £20.00 on my Ebay bits, hooray! Keep at it ladies!

roguepixie · 08/01/2012 18:07

Thanks for the info bossybritches - I always thought it was just oils per se. Glad to learn something new.

Made huge vat of chilli yesterday - ate portion for dinner last night, some i fridge for tomorrow evening and the rest portioned up into the freezer. Chicken in the oven for tonights' dinner so will strip carcass and do stock tomorrow.

Printed the freezer/larder/pantry forms from organised household site and have listed the contents of the freezer so far. Found an extra 2 packs of shortcrust pastry (so that makes 6!!!!!), a block of puff pastry, a pack of filo pastry and a feiulle de brick Confused. What is God's name was I thinking when I collected that bunch of "necessary shopping". Pies for us for the coming month then Grin.

Right, I wrote this earlier and lost it HOW??.

Anyway I've been reading this thread and have some ideas some of you might find useful, some of you wont.

I always have a bottle of pop/water etc in the car. Has saved me buying expensive water many times.

I park a few streets away from the main parking areas in town and get 30 mins free.

Everytime I take a packed lunch or park for free I write it in my diary and then at the end of the week I write it on the calender so I know how much better off we are for the week.

I use the smartprice/basic cleaning products.

SP Wax polish, 30p. I use it on the glass tv stand (they were fashionable when we bought it) and paintwork and wood with no problems.

SP washing bio powder, £1.79 for 2kg in sains. I cant see a difference from when we used to use persil from costco. I use three dessert spoons of it with two of soda crystals. Soda crystals in homebargains/savers are 65p compared with 99p in asda.

I swapped from using woolite from homebargains for £1.99 to Alur from homebargains for 89p (made by the stardrops people, again cant tell a difference).

SP multi surface liquid decanted into a spray bottle. If your cleaning the worktops/ cooker 2 or 3 times a day before cooking and after cooking you dont really need strong cleaners such as cillit bang, flash, or mr m. It cuts through the grease on the cooker after a sunday breakfast.

SP disinfectant for the bin, 30p decanted into a spray bottle. I do the bin weekly and use 2 bottles a year by spraying it on.

SP cream cleaner, 30p.

SP loo cleaner, If I put it down before work and clean the loo when I get home it stays clean and we live in a hard water area. I forgot a bit over christmas (too busy drinking) so it got a bit manky. Half a bottle of sp vinegar sorted that out though. I put the sp cleaner in a swan necked bottle so it's easier to use but I think the tesco sp one is in a proper bottle.

SP rubber gloves, about 60p for two pairs, they always go on my left thumb so no point buying expensive ones.

SP thin bleach in a spray bottle for getting stains out of white clothes/sheets etc and for spraying around the sink (butler sink, pita) 30p.

I swapped colour catchers for savers cheapo ones, £1 for 20.

Tesco daisy dishwashing powder, one dessert spoon per wash. Works just fine, no dirty dishes or streaky glasses.

Savers own brand rinse aid, £1. It has the same active ingredients as the Finish one does. I'm not brave enough yet to put white vinegar in the rinse aid compartment but I have read on the good housekeeping thread that people do with no ill effects or streaky glasses.

Half a cup of soda crystals for the monthly dishwasher deep clean.

Aldi shower shine, mr m copy, 69p. Works just as well as the mr m one I bought in asda. I bought both to compare (extreme sadness).

I started using all of these because I read on money saving expert last year that people who do the supermarket challenge are least likely to change on their cleaning products so I thought I'd give it a go and so far I havent been disappointed with any of them. I used to think they must be rubbish to be so cheap and that they wouldnt cope with grease etc but they do.

So I hope this is of help to some of you. I havent managed to convince MIL that they work but I think she would die a death if anyone she knows saw smartprice products in her trolley. Although she did buy basics grapes recently and told me there just the same as ordinary grapes. I just said " I know, I've been telling you about basics stuff for the last year". I think she was expecting rotting fruit tbh.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2012 18:53

Oh, and we use the smatprice cat litter too, it doesnt smell after they have used it or anything.

Bossybritches22 · 08/01/2012 19:27

rogue sorry to be a nelly know-all but there is so much scaremongering about aromatherapy & it can be so useful and natural it's shame to not use it!

Happy to share any tips if anyone wants to PM me, it's very versatile.

Fluffy I agree SP products can be great, not all of them but I use most of them a lot!

spewgloriousspew · 08/01/2012 19:29

Feeling happier now. Yes, we've spent a lot today, but they weren't little impulse buys, but things we actually need. Plus I got a teeny bit of freelance work. Just a one-off initially, but might turn into something more.

Now, does anyone know what I can do with molasses? I have a large, unopened jar in the cupboard and no idea what to do with it...

sarahken · 08/01/2012 19:29

I have been trying to save as much as possible since the 1st, especially as I have just started maternity leave last week. This is what I managed so far:

  1. Checked out hotukdeals.com and got quite a few bargains at Tesco especially on Bold washing powder- 36 washes for £3, ending up saving about £30 on a £30 shop, so half price on my essential bits so that will keep me going for a bit.

  2. I needed pjs for hospital which I asked for, for Xmas. People gave me the gift receipts so I took them back and bought them back at half price, so another £26.50 in my pocket Grin

  3. £95 quidco paid into my account on the 3rd from two mobile contracts I signed up for in November for me and dh

  4. Got my son 2 apps free for his leap pad which would usually cost £10 by using the codes on here

  5. Been onto Tesco.com and checked to see if we had any lost club card vouchers, had some points I'd never claimed which were due to expire next month. Have traded them in for a day out to the Lakes Aquarium costing £20 for free, so that's a treat for the kids next weekend.

  6. sold £120 of stuff on ebay and facebook

  7. Had a big root round and found 90 euros, £9 Matalan vouchers, £23 Next vouchers, and £14 cash in an old handbag.

  8. Started saving £2 in a pot per day for xmas next year, a massive £16 so far :)

Unfortunately work wrote to me yesterday morning and told me they overpaid me by £225 last month by miscalculating my maternity pay and they want it back this month, so it all seems in vain :(

soandsosmummy · 08/01/2012 19:41

I did well until Saturday morning when I went out with a friend for breakfast and ended up paying for her too. We did go somewhere cheap though so it was only £7.50 for both of us. Then ended up in Greggs buying lunch for DD me and DP Blush which was another £6.50. Otherwise I've only done the weekly shop and paid out the normal direct debits.

So much for no spend - £14 gone just like that on eating out and about. I have managed to avoid Costa though which since I'd normally pop in at least once a day and have been known to go twice is very good

MyOhMyOh · 08/01/2012 19:41

Wow, Sarah, you've done brilliantly there. Work wouldve asked for that money back anyway so it wasnt in vain but it must be a bit disheartening. But you've done great to have saved/earned so much Smile

I've sold a few bits on ebay (not received payment yet but am counting it as earned Grin), sold a broken old phone to envirophone and sorted more stuff out to ebay later this month. When DH changes mobile contract in Feb, I'll do it via topcashback/quidco as they have good money back offers.

I need to stick to my meal plans more as that would save a bit. And thanks for those tips Fluffy, I'll try the SP stuff this month.

spewgloriousspew · 08/01/2012 19:53

Love the idea of buying back goods in the sale, Sarah! Although I know at M&S they will only return items at sale value - where did you do your pjs?

sarahken · 08/01/2012 20:08

well I got pj's from Asda with gift receipts, paid for with cash so they just gave me cash back. To be fair they bought the wrong size (no way was my bump getting in them) so I needed to exchange them anyway. I begrudge paying a lot as they will only be used for a couple of weeks and maternity ones are extortionate. I think in total this week I have gained/saved around £300 in goods. At least there's no council tax next month so I won't feel the hit as much as that's £105

spewgloriousspew · 08/01/2012 20:16

I ended up wearing size 20 pyjama tops from primark when I was pregnant - saved loads on buying maternity ones. Who cares if they're not that stylish - you're in bed...well done on the savings Smile

Had forgotten about the council tax holiday, hurrah!

Bossybritches22 · 08/01/2012 20:25

I think I'll start sorting things soon with a view to carbooting once the weather is better. If I get them boxed up & put in the loft, then it's a
de-cluttering exercise too! Smile

Did my meat shop today, enough for the next 2 weeks meals, if I stretch it with veggie nights too, plus the girls are at their Dads this w/e so that's a few meals I can save on. So using store cupboard & freezer stuff I've spent about £100 for 3 of us for 3 weeks food, pack-ups and snacks.

I might be really cheeky and ring a few friends that I have a standing invite to & eat for free!

On the down side I have to pay for the balance on a school trip for DD2, paid £50 before Christmas, got to find another £50. I shall do £25 this wk and £25 next . I don't begrudge it, the school always get good value trips. She's going to see War Horse, the Hockney exhibition and overnight stay plus coach and tube travel for £100 which isn't bad.

duchesse · 08/01/2012 20:52

Not so good day yesterday:
Another £95 (!!!) on diesel (last lot was to get us back from France)
£12.66 in Morrison's which included a casserole dish for DS to take back to university with him today.
£17 in Tesco on nappies, squash and things to tempt DD3 into eating something (she's been vomiting and not eating for over a week now)

Today:
Probably roughly £80 on DS start of term shop (our termly contribution to his living expenses although I also gave him some other money)
Most of the tank of diesel gone I daresay on driving him back. sob.

It's not willful at all.

moomoo1967 · 08/01/2012 20:57

bossybritches22 glad I could be of service Smile I couldn't get on with flylady either. Organisedhome also do a organisedchristmas too, just remember that it is an American site though so different technology.
I haven't had chance to list anything on the FB group yet. I did message the admin and he said that the only rule is that a deal is a deal and that anyone found to be messing anyone about gets removed from the group.
I was just fed up of buyers on Ebay being rude or giving bad feedback when I knew perfectly well that there had been nothing wrong with the item etc so thought I would try something else.

roguepixie · 08/01/2012 21:01

Not a nelly know-all bossy - I hate relating information that is wrong so am always happy to learn new things or the correct information. Would you pm me with a list of any oils for skin irritations? Both myself and my DS get eczema (him more than me) and I would welcome some idea of the correct oils to put in his bath. Thanks.

Have significant John Lewis vouchers but am saving them for a new tv. Will check my foreign money tin tomorrow to see if there is anything worth changing over.

Good news on the council tax holiday, had forgotten about that Smile.

Tip for cleaning mirrors - mix 1 part white vinegar with 5 parts water in a used but clean spray bottle. Makes for streak free glass cleaner and an excellent window buffing cleaner. Cheaper than anything you can buy as the bottle of white vinegar goes on and on.

morecoffeepleaseholdthecake · 08/01/2012 21:53

Oh yes, lavender and tea tree, we use those neat as well! Blush They are just part of my bathroom now and forgot about them. However, when ds was a baby, we were advised to use these with a carrier oil as he had very sensitive skin. Was that not necessary? My dh has eczema and uses both of these neat without a problem though.

dublindee · 08/01/2012 22:29

Am feeling very saintly. Stuck to meal plan today, lovely roast pork dins as we got the leg joint half price in Morrissons yesterday. Fed the 4 of us good portions with enough over for the boys first ever packed lunches tomorrow (when I was in work just paid for school dins but can't justify £18.50 a week spend now.) plus enough to make a pork sweet and sour for our dinner tomorrow evening.
2 good meals and kids lunch from a £5.50 leg joint :o
Leftover veg and spuds got blitzed and seasoned and stock added to make soup for our lunch tomorrow. Am starting to get the hang of this "full-time housewife" stuff :o Not saying that to be condescending it was just an "in" joke with hubby and I in the run up to my leave date. For the month before I left work I'd say "I wish I had time to do x" to which he'd reply sarcastically (as he knows how much work it is with the lads) "well, when you're a full time housewife..."

Collision · 08/01/2012 22:49

I found some celeriac in the bottom of the fridge so I boiled it up and mashed it.

Then I put it in the bottom of a soup bowl and poured over lentil soup and it was delish.........a sort of stoop! stew/soup

Bossybritches22 · 08/01/2012 22:56

Damn just lost my last post!

morecoffee-probably just a precaution with hisskin being v. senitive, also the carrier oil/cream would be soothing.

rouge will pm you tomorrow!

Jezabelle · 08/01/2012 23:01

OK, have spent £4.50 today. Non essentials but couldn't resist meeting up with friends in the local pub! DDs had a party today, so that kept them busy for a few free hours, (bought the pressie in December). Never did quite manage to ebay anything today in the end. Maybe tomorrow?

mrspnut · 08/01/2012 23:05

I bloody buggeringly spent another £45 in sainsbury's today. That's what happens when you let your family come shopping with you.

I bought no meat, no vegetables, a little fruit, some yoghurts and loads of packed lunch crap.
I did buy tonic water but have now run out of gin - which is the story of my life.
