I am trying to save money by making sandwiches for my husband to take to work but i'm desperately short of inspiration. What to do that is cheap but doesnot rely on super cheap meat. If i can't expand the range a bit we'll both get bored of it very soon.

Please help...

I suppose it depends where you shop (if that isn't stating the obvious).

I've rediscovered Aldi recently and all of the following are super cheap and could do sarnies:

Cream cheese (with smear of pesto or cucumber or salad)
Tuna mayo (with sweetcorn or gherkins or red onion)
Good range of hams / cold meats
Loads of tasty cheeses: cheddar and tomato, brie and grape, lancashire and chutney
Houmous
Marmite

I love jam or marmalade sandwiches.

PontyMython · 05/12/2011 18:37

I need inspiration too - I get bored so easily and need to take lunch with me. I only work 3 days a week, but as I'm the only one eating the stuff (DH has allergies) it needs to be something that lasts in the fridge IYSWIM.

GloriaSteinem · 05/12/2011 18:37

All good ideas, but just a quick question, can't he make his own? Grin

bagelmonkey · 05/12/2011 18:40

Gentleman's relish, sandwich spread, jars of meat or fish paste?

oflip · 05/12/2011 18:40

I do get bored but put up with it becuase it saves a fortune!

bigTillyMincepie · 05/12/2011 18:41

DH loves peanut butter

Thefoxsbrush · 05/12/2011 18:47

Whatever you have for tea the night before stuffed into a pitta bread? Stir frys are good for this

wahwahwah · 05/12/2011 18:50

Soup? Great in this weather and you will only need to pack him off with a buttered roll!

GrooveIsInTheFart · 05/12/2011 18:52

Cream cheese strawberry and honey
Peanut butter apple and banana
Sausage tomato and mustard

GrooveIsInTheFart · 05/12/2011 18:53

Grated apple and beetroot

GrooveIsInTheFart · 05/12/2011 18:55

Grilled streaky bacon, lettuce and Toms (sauce is cheaper)

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 05/12/2011 18:55

Make soup, pasta salads with tomatoey or mayo sauces, cous cous salads with any cold leftover meats and some salad veg - lots of options that don';t involve sandwiches

AnotherMincepie · 05/12/2011 19:02

Beef paste
Cheese with jam (just as nice as Brie and Cranberry)
Value smoked salmon trimmings

ModreB · 05/12/2011 19:06

Tuna mayo and sweetcorn.
Corned beef and Tomato ketchup
Grated cheese and Coleslaw
Peanut Butter and Jam
Chicken with stuffing and cranberry jelly
Anything left over from last nights tea in a tupperware box (If he has a microwave at work)

Auntiestablishment · 05/12/2011 19:12

Buy a cheap cut of beef (brisket is my favourite ever) & roast. Once it's done once for dinner, the remains can be thinly sliced and used for sandwich fillings. I did that today - yummy! Far better than even mega-posh Waitrose sliced meat, and more left for tomorrow.

SebbysMum · 05/12/2011 19:31

Thank you. I knew someone would suggest he makes his own but he works very late and leaves early and i am still on maternity leave so it does fall to me. Left to him we'd be back to Pret lunches.

I'd love to do the leftovers in tupperware option but he wants to be able to eat quickly and with as little mess as possible at his desk. Will ask him though

tinned sardines or mackerel mixed with value brand cream cheese

mango chutney perks up a cheddar sandwich no end.

Dumpyandabdabs · 05/12/2011 19:51

Tuna, red onion and cucumber
Hummus and pickled beetroot
lidl do a cheap version of feta cheese called salad cheese which is lovely in a sandwich with tomatoes and spring onions
Egg mayo mixed with a smidge of pesto
Salami and salad
If you buy a whole chicken or a gammon joint it works out a million times cheaper than buying packets of sliced meat, sliice and freeze in portions.
