How much do you pay each month for gas and electric?

Just been looking at all our outgoings as we seriously need to cut back somewhere! We are with e-on for gas and electric, and our monthly direct debit is £110. We live in a 4 bed detached house, although not a particularly large one. We are a family of 3, plus a dog. We use the tumble dryer A LOT as when I put the washing on the line, the fecking dog pulls it off!
Just wondered how our bill compares to other people's.

Thanks

Also £110, 4 bed semi built in 1950s, four of us. Just been reduced from £130 as we were so much in credit!

IwanttobeShirleyValentine · 31/08/2011 14:05

£150 per month cover both the gas and leccy in our large 3 bed semi.

£90 4 bed terrace, no water meter, very warm so not much central heating used but 3 kids so may be using tumble dryer more!

defineme · 31/08/2011 14:16

With eon and pay £80 a month for both. 4 bed semi 1930sfamily of 5, daily dishwasher, new boiler, use tumble dryer rarely, 3 kids share a bath! Don't put central heating on as much as some I know and only in winter of course-about 6-8am and 3-7pm.We haver an electric fire in living room we use in the evening, but often turn it off-it makes us so hot!

I think the boiler has made a huge difference as has not using tumble dryer. My top tip is drying sheets off bannisters-they dry really quick! We also have a south facing consevatory which heats up fast and then lets a whoomf of hot air into the rest of the house. I dry most of my stuff in there too.

£77 per month for both in a 3 bed terrace. 2 adults, 4 kids, though admittedly 2 of the kid are 5 wk old twins, so not sure of their impact yet.

We're on Economy 7 so dishwasher and washing machine go on overnight. I use the tumble drier in winter and on wet days but line dry when I can.

We also have decent loft and cavity wall insulation.

Ormirian · 31/08/2011 14:38

Thanks!

This thread is making me feel much better.

£166 a month for both g & e. 4 bed house. 5 people. Includes a debt that we built up last year Hmm NPower.

Ormirian · 31/08/2011 14:41

I would move suppliers but when I try the comparison thing it seems to come out cheapest with existing supplier using a different deal. And I presume we'd have to pay off what we owe first Hmm

stressheaderic · 31/08/2011 15:13

Lots of people on this thread have a tumble dryer - I've never had or used one in my life? What are they for?
I just hang clothes on the maiden in kitchen in winter (takes 24 hrs ish to dry) or the washing line in spring/summer. Urgent drying goes over the radiator. Always managed fine like this - am I missing a trick?

MollieO · 31/08/2011 15:24

stressheaderic what do you do in the summer to get washing dry quickly? I'm talking about coming home at 8pm and needing clothes washed and dried for 7am? We don't have the heating on in the summer so a tumble dryer is the only way. Rarely needed but essential when it is.

LawrieMarlow · 31/08/2011 15:31

Have looked more closely at bill and am paying £32 a month gas and £37 a month for electricity.

LawrieMarlow · 31/08/2011 15:32

stressheaderic, I think most people know what a tumble drier is for, even if they have never used one.

Ormirian · 31/08/2011 15:33

We don't have one either anymore eric. It died and we decided to do without.

We are lucky in that we have a sort of gazebo thing in the garden and we hang washing in there. In the summer it dries really quickly. In winter it takes longer but still dries - or we use an airer in the conservatory or the kitchen.

stressheaderic · 31/08/2011 19:01

I've honestly never needed washing dried as quickly as overnight! Neither me nor DP wear a uniform so we always have plenty of work shirts and blouses available, I know DP has more than 15, no drying them overnight urgently is ever needed.
We only have 1 DD who is 18 months, maybe when she is school age and school skirts etc need doing over night, we might have to look at getting one!

MollieO · 31/08/2011 20:35

Wait to you get to school age. Doesn't happen often but it can happen with sports kit in particular. We have a washer dryer as no room for a separate tumble dryer. I reckon I use the dryer part once every couple of weeks, if that. I used it for 30 mins the other day to finish off washing that had been drying outside (started to rain when not quite dry enough to put away).

Feeling a bit hard done by reading this. We pay £108 a month combined with npower but live in a small 2 bed with no central heating. The house is old though and i guess very energy inefficient. No tumble dryer here either Sad. We did do a price comparison once years ago but not many companies did the two meter reading - one for general use and one for storage heaters. Very annoying. And it is going up 14% next month.

Awomancalledhorse · 02/09/2011 18:10

Economy seven eletric only here (2 bed, first floor flat, tumble dryer, dishwasher & long Playstation nights!), £50p/m by DD.

Have just found out we can save £80 a year by switching from EDF (DH has lived here for 5 years and never considered swapping)!

3 bedroom semi, 2 adults and 4 children. We are with EDF, £76 per month direct debit for both. Running E10 for electricity (10 hours on a low rate a day), dishwasher runs once a day and dehumidifier runs through the nights when washings on the line. My water rate is the most expensive one, £45 per month ( no metre) !
