I've been trying out a few "basic" own brand products in recent week and my faves (all from Sainsbury's) are:

Bananas
Tissues - good for kids who just blow and throw all the time, although I would buy nice soft ones if they had a cold!

Frozen berries - only £1 per bag, and great for smoothies or to warm up to make a fruity sauce to go with ice cream

Jellykat · 28/02/2011 22:36

I recommend-Tesco value cashews 97p, and Tortilla chips 29p.

DerangedSibyl · 01/03/2011 19:54

UHT skimmed milk - most supermarkets do this, 50p a litre and lovely in tea and on cereal.

Morrison's value pasta twists - 20p for 500g

Morrison's value biscuit assortment - plain, but 76p for 650g of biscuits

Morrison's value potatoes - HOWEVER if you can carry them or have a car, get a sack as this is cheaper still.

rinabean · 01/03/2011 19:56

Not strictly a value brand, but Aldi's pasta is awesome and it's only a pound a kilo (spaghetti even cheaper still).

Deux · 02/03/2011 14:30

Lots of things from Aldi, pull up nappies v good, biscuits, fruit and veg, chocolate, baked goods, pasta, crisps, pizzas, mini icecream cones, all cleaning products, washing powder tablets, hot smoked salmon fillet (better than waitrose, really!) .....

Sainsbury's Basics dishwash tabs have been fab even when only using a half of one. So cheap.

I'm increasingly using value and can't say we are suffering in any way.

Has anyone found a good coffee? I've not found one yet though the Coop do one but no Coop near here.

higgle · 02/03/2011 16:23

Can I come back for a second go?

REd Kidney beans in tins - 19p at Tesco and Sainsbury's
Tesco value red leicester cheese
value/basics natural yoghurt

nannyl · 02/03/2011 16:30

oh i forgot to add kidney beans onto my list too

and my grandma loves the coleslaw as its the lowest fat and fewest calories she can find! (she normally grates an extra carrot into it)

smart price passata is fine too
another vote for golden syrup
the pizzas are great if you add some extra veg and a load of grated cheese on top

Huffymuffy · 21/03/2011 20:33

Second the Sainsburys basics mozzarella, humous (it is yummy), camembert and their hand wash.
Tesco value biscuits all types very good.
Tesco value cheese I.e. Cheddar or red Leicester both perfectly acceptable for lunch boxes.
Tesco value from fromage frais pots for kids 60p for 6 I think third the price of petit filou as are Sainsbury basic yogs.
Sainsbury or Tesco yogurts in general.
I guess you can't go far wrong with dairy!
Value loo roll. Once I got my head round it...or bum I should say! It's just paper!!

nannyl · 21/03/2011 21:42

Just had some sainsburys basic broken mandarin oranges from a tin (in juice)

they are just the same as any other, and i have to say many of the segments were NOT actually broken.

also tried the parmesan italian hard cheese, its fine and will buy again

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/03/2011 19:07

If you buy sains tin fruit it's in juice but asdas is in syrup.

icandoit · 22/03/2011 23:34

Sainsburys 'basic' potato salad (65p or so and delish) and basic batter/pancake mix (10p ish)

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/03/2011 07:42

I've used the dishwash tabs too on holiday. Can't believe how much cheaper they are. Never thought of halving them.

For the lady who wants a cheaper coffee have you tried poundland or savers?they do brands cheaper it just has foriegn writing on the labels.

No they're fine ime. We bought a catering pack of Typhoo in October last year and I used the last teabag yesterday. They come in a huge plastic bag just tie it up and decant handfuls of bags into another container they're fine. It was £18 I think for 1000 bags.

noodle69 · 25/04/2011 06:38

Tesco wet wipes 18p. Great for taking out and about if your children are having an ice cream or a picnic. I carry some in my bag all the time and they are so cheap!

Also spaghetti is 14p a tin in Tesco.

voodoomunkee · 01/05/2011 17:02

Value biccies from Morrisons, tesco's, sainsbury's, Asda, all fine - no1 in office notices when they are decanted into the biccie tin and the kids and OH at home just dont care! Definitely cloths, definitely pasta, smart price tuna chunks - great for all variations! Cheese, eggs, batter mix, crisps, flour, tinned toms and passata. Bottled water - (mum drinks this all the time). Kitchen roll. Not used basics washing powder but quite often buy own brand powder/liquid and conditioner. Crumpets/muffins/croissants, basics cakes. Erm.... Tetra pak OJ/apple juice etc. Veg. Quite often buy basics pizza and add stuff to it for the dc's. Only thing I can't do is downgrade tea, loo rolls, coffee, cereals. After that am game for most things! (ok maybe not beer or wine lol)

overthemill · 06/05/2011 21:19

we've dropped to value most things from tesco:
tuna - fine for sandwiches/pasta
pasta sauce (cheaper than value toms)
pasta quills (19p for 500g)
soft cheese
grated cheddar
cheddar slices for sarnies
jaffa cakes
all biscuits
sweets (choc eclairs are yummy)
flour
frozen chicken breast
kitchen roll
sweetcorn
kidney beans
sliced bread
any fruit/veg they have in (aubergines are fantastic value!)
toothpaste
toothbrushes
wipes
rabbit food
porridge
choc mousse

a friend of mine used to work in HQ and she told me the contents depend on where they can source it from cheapest but it is all at least as good quality as own brand. So even if you don't like something now, try aggain in a while as it may be different.

today did huge shop for £20 of all the basics which should last for a few weeks with milk and veggies as extras

suebfg · 06/05/2011 21:23

Aldi for face creams, shaving gel, dishwasher tablets, milk, parmesan cheese, chicken breasts (grade A quality), olive oil, frozen fish, fruit and veg, toilet rolls

Anywhere for value chopped tomatoes, flour, kidney beans - you can't tell the difference

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/05/2011 19:40

Bought asda smartprice back bacon, thought it will prob be vile, too thin, tear when I take it out the pack, fill the pan with White scummy stuff.

It was great. Medium thick cut, didn't shrink in the pan and no White scummy stuff.

It was better than the extra special stuff we had last time.

Beamur · 08/05/2011 19:44

Kids have asked me to buy the value choc chip cookies in future - v cheap (so will buy more...)
I always get dishwasher tabs from Lidl, their toilet cleaner also v good.

pollyblue · 22/06/2011 19:29

Tesco Value loo rolls, pack of four jumbo one currently £1.20. As good as more expensive brands - didn't like Sains basics ones, found it too flimsy.

Sainsbury's basics digestives, about 30p a pack. Lovely! Actually prefer to McVities.

Tesco or Sains basics fromage frais.

higgle · 24/06/2011 16:58

Lidl "Tower" chocolate digestives, 49p - just as nice as McVities. Their concentrated squash (69p) is good too. Celery is a different species to most of the supermarket stuff and is nicer anc cheaper, milk £1 for 6 pints I'm doing about a third of my shopping there now and saving about £10.
