all the info if you google census jobs; it's eve and weekend work from april to june, mainly chasing up people who don't send back their census form. local and pay ok i think. fairly flexible. i'm always looking for little earners like this.....

I would go for this! I worked on the 2001 census and went round handing out the forms with my dd in her buggy. it was great to be involved and I really got to know the area I was working in well.
The money was ok too!

morethanyoubargainfor · 01/12/2010 18:37

all i can say is good with with the 'siftability' test!

I know of 3 people including myself and all of us failed! So we won't be offered employment.

TheLifeOfRiley · 01/12/2010 18:38

what does the test entail morethanyoubargainfor?

Might be okay for me, would probably take ds in his pushchair.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 01/12/2010 18:39

morethan - was it one of those horrendou all day things that door to door employers use?

You know, role play, interview, assessment and it takes at least 1/2 a day to do?

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 01/12/2010 18:54

hmm - very clever - I see they either do 37hrs, 25hrs or 15 hours for most of their posts. I hate places that do 15hrs instead of 16 grrr

and OMFG - I've just looked further and it's bloody Capita >

Would they really let you take a child with you? Surely that would be against all the H&S regulations??? (obviously I know you can with Avon and such stuff but this is a bit different iykwim?)

morethanyoubargainfor · 01/12/2010 20:32

online scenarios, three sections and really stupid questions about what would you do etc etc.

No role play or interview at this stage, but i think that would have been next had i not been so crap at the scenario's Grin.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 01/12/2010 20:40

oh I wouldn't have a cat in hells chance anyhow - even if I could work up until 9pm Grin

I didn't even get past the stupid question bit of a McDonald's Crew Member job application Blush

I guess Capita aren't so bad said through gritted teeth but they can be pretty slow at expenses just to warn anyone that does get past the siftability thing

thisisyesterday · 01/12/2010 20:46

cool thanks, have applied!

stressheaderic · 02/12/2010 21:49

Have just completed my Sift Ability tests - not the easiest of things and did have to concentrate on a few of the sections, but we'll see.

thisisyesterday · 03/12/2010 10:56

did the siftability last night too and got an e-mail this morning inviting me for a telephone interview! how exciting!

misspudding · 03/12/2010 19:31

I have also applied, going to do the Sifability test in peace and quiet. Good luck to all!

SausageMonster · 04/12/2010 21:22

I was an enumerator for the 1981 and 2001 census.

1981 recruitment was very casual.

2001 was much more 'professional' with application form on which you had to state your experience and suitability.

Passed that part and was invited to an interview with regional and local organisers. Most difficult question was 'what would you do if someone refused to fill in their census form?'

The answer is that they can chose not to fill it in however you should inform them that failing to complete a census form is a statutory requirement that may result in legal proceedings.

I shan't do it in 2011. the questions are now too numerous and too probing. There was much more hsotility in 2001 than I experience in 1981.

Be prepared to have to sit down with some people and help them fill in the form. the daftest experience I had was filling in someone's form while he was in the shower and shouting the answers through the bathroom door. He lived at home and although his parents had completed their details he wouldn't give his to them but didn't mind giving them to me.

I also had one chap running up the road to hand his to me as he had been divorced but had failed to tell his current partner this (who thought he was still married) and he didn't want her to see the form.

Also helped a very young mother who was illiterate fill hers in as her partner who normally dealt with these things was in prison.

went back 4 times to one house to collect the form having made an appointment to do so with the householder. Each time it hadn't been completed. gave her a warning that this was the last time I would try to collect and which prompted her to run after me screaming that I was being unreasonable Confused

Oh yes - it's an experience Grin

I did it on 1991. Hard work but I was working ft at the time. I had one bloke living in a tint one-bed flat who got quite aggressive when I gently queried if he really had 22 people in his flat at 02.00?

NoahAndTheWhale · 04/12/2010 21:39

I applied and did siftability a bit ago. Am presuming I failed Grin.

stressheaderic · 06/12/2010 17:53

I've just got htrough to the Telephone interview - wonder what they'll ask?

Thanks SausageMonster for above post, very helpful.

FreudianFoxSquishedByAPouffe · 06/12/2010 17:56

Ooh thanks for this will check it out later.

ChippyMinton · 07/12/2010 10:33

Did it in 2001. Bloody hard work. Wouldn't do it again.

ShrinkingViolet · 07/12/2010 10:54

telephone interview is competence based scenarios ("tell me about a situation where you had to resolve a conflict" kind of thing) - I did some work for the earlier part of the census - the application admin was pretty shocking (training was organised at the last minute, my line manager wasn't told i was starting till two days after I had officially started, my iD card got lost in the post twice).
I'm not applying for this next stage as it's too much dealing with difficult people for me (the ones who haven't filled in their forms and don't want to/can't for whatever reason).
My advice is to pick your area really really carefully - I was lucky in that my area was generally very nice, but a colleague had soem horror stories of the places she had to visit.

thisisyesterday · 08/12/2010 18:43

have got my telephone interview booked for tuesday evening! am a bit scared as I am awful on the phone, i go all nervous and silly and forget what i'm talking about

tanmu82 · 20/12/2010 11:22

my dh got the job for our area....pay will come in handy as I'm on mat leave and have just been made redundant.

goodmanners · 27/12/2010 19:52

i did it in 2001, simple enough procedure to become an emunerator back then , looks more complicated andn hassle to apply this time You had to knock on every single door in your area last tie, is it same this time??? i do electoral registration canvass and at least only have to knock on non returns.

brightandcheery · 21/02/2011 21:35

The job desciption in my local job centre states this role "will see successful candidates in confrontational situations after dark in someone elses home".

As a woman, I would not even contemplate this...my husband would not be impressed if I did...no matter how much I want a job.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 21/02/2011 21:41

My DH got a letter today saying he'd got the job as a collector. Hooray perhaps we'll get a holiday this year after all!

ScramVonChubby · 21/02/2011 21:43

Am waiting to hear; had interview a few weeks back so assume not, there's a uni a mile away so they were probably inundated.

Ah well. I tried.

feckinpenniless · 22/02/2011 17:24

I've got my telephone interview booked for this Friday so would be really interested in hearing from anyone who's done that part of the process. I intend to do it naked, lying on my bed, just because I've never had a nude interview before!
