Struggling with Covid this week and I’m hearing lots of others are too. Also heard of a care home closed to visitors as they have it. What’s going on? Old news ? Just supposed to treat it as a cold? I’ve felt like death! Really high temperatures, cracking headaches, vomiting - you name it. Got to make vulnerable really ill. Election more important?

How are people so confident about all the times they had 'real' flu? Flu, like Covid, can have no symptoms, low level symptoms or it can feel like you're about to expire. I know I definitely had flu a handful of times because I had all the classic symptoms and was extremely ill, but I don't know for certain if those are the ONLY times.

I quite agree. It's so weird that after the last few years when we've all learned beyond a shadow of a doubt that Covid can vary in severity from "bit under the weather, will skip my morning run" to "intensive care or death" depending on strain/prior infection/personal immune system, people are still trotting out "if you had flu you wouldn't be able to open your eyes". Flu comes in loads of different variants, interacting with a billion immune systems, of course it can vary in severity.

There was just a piece on radio 2. Promoted me to test when I got home (currently off work as very tired, heavy cold, bit of a fever, sore throat so have lost voice) and turns out my nasty cold is covid.

Debbiehv · 04/07/2024 20:14

@MartyFunkhouser no it’s not, it’s a vascular disease

Motheranddaughter · 04/07/2024 20:17

Because it’s not really news any more
I only know 1 person who is still testing and they have health anxiety

rwalker · 04/07/2024 20:20

The majority aren’t interested so it’s not deemed news worthy

I have it. I tested not because I'm neurotic but because I was due to meet a good friend's elderly and clinically vulnerable mother yesterday. And actually, even if my test was negative I would not have met her because my 'cold' was a really nasty one.

Now I know it's covid which really is so unpredictable, I'm trying hard to avoid breathing on anyone, but I have to travel home today. So now I've tested, I have double reason to mask up. Not anxious, just trying to be as considerate as I can afford to be without actually stranding myself abroad!

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 05/07/2024 03:36

As a 111health advisor, I've definitely had more people calling that have tested positive for Covid.

lovelysunshine22 · 05/07/2024 03:42

I had it last week, i felt like death for 4 days and i still have a cough now. Both my dc have now got it and are quite unwell! GP said its rife atm.

TheaBrandt · 05/07/2024 03:47

You did not have flu if you were "right as rain" after 3 days. I got proper flu as a healthy early 30 something rarely ill. My god it took it me down. Day 3 I wanted to die. Couldn't physically look after my own baby.

Why is it so hard to believe that different people react differently to illnesses?
A few years back (pre-covid) the Flu was hitting hard where I am (in America). My son came down sick. Took him to the doctor and they tested him and he was positive for Influenza B. He was back to school on the 4th day(although probably should have stayed off one more since he was pretty tired by the time he got home). By day 5 he was back to his normal self. So yes, he had legit Flu and he was better within a few days.

He probably should have stayed off longer because he might still have been contagious

Peonies12 · 05/07/2024 09:36

Why should the press report about common illness, it's not news. It's normal life.

WavingTree · 05/07/2024 09:37

Butterflyfern · 29/06/2024 11:24

It's not really news though is it. There's been repeated small waves, exactly like the experts predicted. And it will never completely go away, as with all newly created diseases .

Tbh, I think the rise in measles, whooping cough and other "Victorian" diseases, simply because people aren't getting vaccinated when the should is bigger news.

Agreed

FairviewRosie24 · 05/07/2024 21:38

For all those who say it’s just a cold, maybe it is for some. For me after my 4Th bout it has left me with high blood pressure (think 212) oedema in the legs and chronic fatigue. And I was an active reasonably fit person. I also lost my best friend to it in 2022. So no, it’s not just a cold for a lot of people.

How are there still people who think this! Flu isn't a description of the severity of an illness. It can be mild, or completely asymptomatic.

Seeing lots of FB updates of people returning from Glastonbury testing positive for Covid.

I was at a Green Day concert a few weeks ago and quite a number of people on the UK fans Facebook page have tested positive since then.

Our local hospital trust are now requiring masks to be worn again by patients and visitors, stating that a number of Covid strains are circulating in the community.

Theyearwas1973 · 10/07/2024 18:48

I’ve tested positive today (tested because I work for a clinically vulnerable person and also care for my cv mum).

I feel like shit, just hoping it doesn’t progress as badly as the Covid I caught in 2021, that was simply awful.

I have had full blown flu in every decade of my adulthood (one being the dreaded swine flu) and felt just dreadful each time even though I was very healthy. I remember my GP telling me (after I’d developed pneumonia from one bout) that if someone genuinely has the flu and there’s a thousand pound sitting at the bottom of the bed most people wouldn’t have the energy to lift their head up off the pillow let alone sit up and pick it up.

I doubt there are many people who recover from the flu in 3 days.
