Struggling with Covid this week and I’m hearing lots of others are too. Also heard of a care home closed to visitors as they have it. What’s going on? Old news ? Just supposed to treat it as a cold? I’ve felt like death! Really high temperatures, cracking headaches, vomiting - you name it. Got to make vulnerable really ill. Election more important?

I get all what you've described with flu. And I've only had flu twice in my life. I was right as rain after 3 days on both occasions. Unless you're immunocompromised, the best thing you can do is get out of the house and go for a brisk walk. Get the sun on your skin and enjoy nature.

Overthebow · 29/06/2024 11:16

Is it really news worthy now though? People get ill all the time and it’s not a new virus anymore.

Righttherights · 29/06/2024 11:17

I wish! Tried that yesterday and felt so ill had to come back. Day 4 and back in bed. No brisk walks for me today unfortunately.
I’m interested in why it’s not being talked about….. guess no one wants to be discussing new waves when there’s an election going on!

Seeline · 29/06/2024 11:17

@VolvoFan I've only had real flu once in over 50 years. I felt really ill for 10 days. I could barely get out of bed to go to the loo for most of that time. A brisk walk outside was out of the question for about 3 weeks.

I think there are always times when certain viruses come to fore - noro, flu etc. It's not going to make headline news every time. Yes COVID is still around, yes some people feel worse than others, yes for some it is still dangerous (but they are still being offered vaccines, as with the annual flu vaccine).
We can't let it dominate our lives forever.

CrunchyCarrot · 29/06/2024 11:18

Election definitely more important, Covid is now old news. I think most people don't want to hear about it anymore, unsurprisingly. Doesn't mean its gone away though, far from it! Hope you feel better soon, OP!

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/06/2024 11:19

They don't. There is a life to get on with.

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 29/06/2024 11:21

Because like a pp said we don't get on the news about flu or norovirus and bother these close care homes and hospital wards

flu kills covid kills it's just one more thing to avoid

chaostherapy · 29/06/2024 11:21

There is a lot of it about right now, and while nothing is to be achieved with scaring people, there are people out there (vulnerable or self-employed or with older relatives) who may appreciate a heads-up in, at the very least the health section of the newspaper etc, that there is a surge or wave of Covid happening now. That would allow them to make informed decisions about where they go and what precautions to take. The media/social media just being silent doesn't help either.

MartyFunkhouser · 29/06/2024 11:22

It’s a virus like any other. It might make you ill, it might not.

I’m very glad it’s no longer talked about. And yes, the election is considerably more important.

chaostherapy · 29/06/2024 11:23

Interesting that it does get into the local news if the local hospital has a noro outbreak, wards are closed and visitors temporarily banned.
But this doesn't happen any more for Covid, despite being pretty infectious and just as inconvenient.

Butterflyfern · 29/06/2024 11:24

It's not really news though is it. There's been repeated small waves, exactly like the experts predicted. And it will never completely go away, as with all newly created diseases .

Tbh, I think the rise in measles, whooping cough and other "Victorian" diseases, simply because people aren't getting vaccinated when the should is bigger news.

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 29/06/2024 11:26

If it were in the news numpties would start panic buying again though. Those of us who are immune compromised will have been told how to avoid it and
coping strategies. They can also find out about current strains going round etc if they wish. They have booster vaccines as well. It's a case of everyone looks after themselves - same as it has always been.

CoffersFord · 29/06/2024 11:26

The ONS Winter Covid Infection Survey ended in March, so I guess there aren't any published figures now for the press to report on. It's being treated as a seasonal virus even though it isn't.

What absolute bollocks. Covid can make people really ill. OP is feeling really ill with Covid. There's a sharp rise in admissions to hospital with Covid. Would you suggest a brisk walk for them instead?

Hope you feel fully better soon, OP.

I have known four people in recent weeks have Covid.

However, the government wants it ignored and has done for a while. Even before the election was called.

I am sure the Tories don't want to be reminded any more than a minimum about Partygate, Eat Out to Help Out (and spread the virus), alleged corrupt procurement, or any of the other activities that include many I consider criminal, relating to the pandemic.

TinyYellow · 29/06/2024 11:35

No one is talking about it because as a news item, it is boring now. Illness and viruses are a normal part of life, there is nothing noteworthy about Covid anymore.

That is unlikely to be flu. Certainly not full blown flu

That’s as useful as posting something like “I’ve always walked as never been in a car crash and paralysed”. You can’t see beyond your own sphere how other people live

needhelpwiththisplease · 29/06/2024 12:17

Because it's something everyone has to live with now and it's not going to go away.
No one has to test or stay at home or isolate.
My work expects everyone in regardless of illness unless to Ill to work.
It's just a virus and some people will be more ill than others, as with all other viruses.

ICantThinkofAnythingClever · 29/06/2024 16:58

Covid is not "a virus like any other". I don't even understand what people mean when they say that. All viruses are different, some cause minor transient illness, some cause devastating illness (e.g. Ebola), some are cleared, some are permanent in the body (e.g. herpes), some create minor illness at first and later long term damage (e.g. poliovirus). Some give lifelong immunity (e.g. smallpox), some you can catch immediately very quickly. "It's just a normal virus" is an illogical statement with zero informational content.

There is no other virus besides Covid that circulates in the UK all throughout the year and causes that much damage and chronic sequelae with so little immunity after infection. Can anyone give one single example? Flu is not it: healthy adults catch flu 1-2 times per decade at most, and it's virtually nonexistent in summer.

To the OP: it's not in the news because it might discourage some people from travelling, going to restaurants etc. aka putting money in corporate pockets. However, we are in a fairly large wave at the moment. Please don't take advice from ignorant people who tell you to go for a "brisk walk". Stay at home until you feel better and practice TOTAL REST. Pretend you're a rock or something. It's vital for preventing Long Covid.

How long are people supposed to rest for? And what is total rest? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question.

PuppyMonkey · 29/06/2024 17:32

I thought vulnerable people were still getting invited for vaccine top ups, so the risk of them being really badly affected isn’t as great as in lockdown days? If there’s a spike in numbers it’s not necessarily disastrous?

It's not a stupid question! I've read a New Scientist piece that recommended rest for two weeks. I guess everyone has a different way of "resting", exercise is not advised as it can be an aggravating factor. Basically- stay in bed, relax and sleep as much as you can.

Which may sound impossible for many people, of course. I am aware those who are able to do this are privileged. I don't think it's a coincidence that Long Covid is more prevalent amongst women, ethnic minorities, and people from disadvantaged economic backgrounds.

The UK government has reduced the number of people they consider "vulnerable" to a very small group, everyone else is now supposed to pay (the vaccines are available privately as of this spring). But I think you are missing the point a bit. You are also vulnerable. I am also vulnerable. Everyone is vulnerable to COVID because most people who get Long Covid were previously completely healthy.

A friend with a very elderly father tipped me off last night that it's on the rise, new strain.
Anyone with elderly family and that is a lot of us, would want to know.
I googled it and it is in the news, if you want to look for it.
Scotland as before is taking notes and being more on the case.
Let's hope this one is over pretty soon for everyone.
We are not doom dwellers for just wanting basic information.
