Yesterday I was with someone with a sniffle for several hours. Today they tested positive for covid. What’s the betting I get it just for Christmas now?
I haven’t had it before so what do you recommend to ease the symptoms?

As long as you have had the jab you will likely also just have a sniffle.

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/12/2023 18:59

I've had it since last Thursday and my partner is still testing clear, so who knows 🤷 You might get it, you might not.

I've actually been fine this time around, a couple of lemsips required early on but otherwise just like a cold. I've had it much worse previously.

Rachaelrachael · 18/12/2023 19:04

I had a bad case of covid recently and no one else in my house caught it, not even my toddler who sleeps touching me! So you never know

Damekitty · 18/12/2023 19:05

Yes I’ve been jabbed.

Milliemoos5 · 18/12/2023 19:06

Yea you may well not get it, I know plenty of couples sleeping in the same bed whereby one of them never caught it.

the only way to help relieve symptoms, if you get it, is the normal paracetamol and ibuprofen and as much sleep as you can get. No other miracle cure. Treat it the same as you would treat a cold

purplehue · 18/12/2023 19:10

I've had it after being vaccinated and it was bad BUT have also sat next to someone for two hours and not contracted it.

You might not get it. Depending how ventilated the room was and how close you were. If the other person wasn't coughing or sneezing there is less of a risk.

Damekitty · 18/12/2023 19:16

It was a living room and I think we may have hugged!

I'm in the same boat, DH has it. He's 4 days in, I have what I think is a cold and am testing negative. I'm just praying that I and the DC don't go down with it over Christmas. We are meant to be hosting 20 people on Christmas Day 😬

Damekitty · 18/12/2023 19:20

Oh dear, at least I’m not hosting. Poor you.

I think it’s worse if someone is coughing and sneezing. I’ve just had it. 5 rough days in bed but not vaccinated. Husband had it and has been vaccinated and was like a cold.

dementedpixie · 18/12/2023 19:23

I tested positive last Monday and dh hasn't got it yet despite sharing the same bed. Ds hasn't been well but has been testing negative. Dd has no signs of illness.

crozzfit · 18/12/2023 19:27

My friend has it and it's just a slight cold for her. So even if you do get it there's no guarantee you'll be very sick

Kazzyhoward · 18/12/2023 19:41

We both caught it last Christmas despite being fully jabbed as vulnerable and OH had more doses than me as he's ECV. It knocked us for six. Took several weeks to be clear of it. Just being jabbed doesn't mean your symptoms will be mild. OH had to go into hospital for extra anti viral drugs and was still really bad!

Saggypants · 18/12/2023 19:43

My partner and have never had covid at the same time. Nor my kids and I. So you can be pretty close up and not catch it, it'll just luck of the draw!

How you'll react if you do catch it is also down to luck a bit. You'll probably be OK by Xmas day though. Maybe a lingering cough.

Jacfrost · 18/12/2023 19:58

It's not a given you'll catch it. We've had it in the house several times over the past couple of years and only once did one other person catch it, no distancing -

DD positive - me and DH fine
DH positive - me and DD fine
DD positive - I caught it, DH fine
Me positive - DD and DH fine

Andarna · 18/12/2023 20:58

I had it twice after being fully vaccinated. Both times I was really tired for 1 day, after that it was a sniffle with a slight headache for about a week. So you might just get it mildly.

Aworldofmyown · 18/12/2023 21:07

Have you had it before? I've sat in a car for 6 hrs with a person with covid, didn't get it. Neither did my dd!!!
When my son had it I didn't get it from him either - so not definite you will catch it.

Stoufer · 18/12/2023 21:11

I read some research a couple of years ago that seemed to suggest that if you use nasal saline wash / spray (eg Sterimar) approx four times a day every day, from the day you test positive for covid, then it clears much quicker than if you don’t, and your viral load is much less. Apparently the people in t

Stoufer · 18/12/2023 21:11

Oops! Clumsy fingers - I’ll continue in next post!

Changingplace · 18/12/2023 21:12

Any time my DH has had it he’s not passed it to me and vice versa, not by any means guaranteed you’ll pick I up.

Stoufer · 18/12/2023 21:14

Apparently the people using the nasal spray tested negative after five days, whereas those not using it didn’t test negative until 10 days had passed. I seem to remember that the viral load didn’t increase as much, and the sneeziness of the person was reduced, using the nasal spray. And it doesn’t have to be anything special, just the standard saline nasal spray you get from a pharmacy.

DingDongBella · 18/12/2023 18:58

Not necessarily - I have had 5 covid vaccines now, and I got it a couple of weeks ago and was really ill

crozzfit · 18/12/2023 21:31

Second using a nasal spray. We use First Defence at the first sign of a sniffle or sore throat in our house

CharmedCult · 18/12/2023 21:34

I've had it twice and DH hasn't yet had it despite sleeping in the same bed, etc while I was ill both times.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/12/2023 21:37

DH and I both had it a few months ago, quite poorly for a couple of days, but recovered quickly. DC didn't catch it. We're all fully jabbed, but haven't been eligible for one since last winter.

I had a stinking cold a couple of weeks ago, didn't test so don't know if it was covid, but it really floored me. No-one else in the house caught it.

It could go either way, all you can do is cross your fingers, and I'd echo other suggestions to use a first defence spray at the first sign of as much as a sniffle. Difflam spray is also good at the first sign of a scratchy throat (not sure if you can use them at the same time, worth checking).

Good luck!
