Situation as it stands:

elderly parent in hospital suddenly with suspected multiple infections - not in imminent danger of passing away but in a bad way

currently live 250+ miles away

my 7 yr old dc just tested positive for covid. I have just tested negative but have obviously had a lot of physical contact etc

My train is booked for 2 hours time, and now I don’t know if I should travel or not.

gut instinct says stay home but worried about DP in hospital who is expecting me.

WWYD?

I would go. My dad was in hospital in 2020 with a heart attack. I was honest with the hospital about how I lived in a major city in tier 3. They were in tier 2. I couldn't see him. He got moved to a care home and was only allowed one visitor. He kept asking to see DD and I. Weren't allowed. He then passed away. 😖

Sorry to hear, OP. In this case I'd definitely go Flowers

Just go.
A common cold could also spread and cause significant issues for sections of population. But we can’t test for that, and if you were feeling well you wouldn’t contemplate not seeing someone in hospital because someone else in the house had a cold.

No sensible person would visit someone in hospital with any transmissible illness. A cold may be mild for a healthy adult, but not for someone with significant medical conditions

If you have a base where you can stay locally to your dp then I'd go, but inform the hospital of the situation and be prepared to isolate when you're there if needs be and just keep testing. Obviously don't visit if you develop any symptoms, even if still testing negative. At least you'll be local and able to see them as soon as you can. Mask and windows open, no hugs if you do visit. I did similar after my dp was symptomatic but who didn't test positive for 3 more days. I tested positive 5 days later but very luckily hadn't passed it on.
