How will the covid in China affect us?

Do you think we are going to get a new wave? Or further lockdowns? 😬

OP posts:
Cassillero · 13/01/2023 00:48

Financially it will probably massively affect us. In the short-term there may be supply issues which will impact our own manufacturing and economy.

Then once it's run through I guess they'll be ramping production back up, buying all the oil and fuel prices will soar.

I love Mumsnet for getting advice on relationships/parenting etc but it doesn't half make me laugh when people post asking questions that literally no one knows the answer to and yet still 100s reply like they real

namechangeforthisoneeee · 13/01/2023 00:57

... like they really do know. All the answers are different but everyone is right. It's funny. Anyway, as you were

Some of these effects (millions infected, ill, off work) have been apparent already and/or can be easily deduced if you are aware of China's role in production. The conditions for producing a worrying variant are also there, and would follow the history of this virus, where VOC have occurred in similar mass outbreaks.

Maybe stay in your lane.

SirMingeALot · 13/01/2023 07:22

If we had an easily transmitted respiratory virus say with a fatality rate of say 5% or greater then that would usher in societal collapse. We got lucky with Covid

I agree @vera99.

We do not know how long vaccine immunity lasts

And there are signs of some vaccine escape in some variants.

High case rates, especially of more than one variant concurrently, is a good breeding ground for new variants. And of course the variants which most escape immunity have the evolutionary advantage.

we may need to update immunisations, same as with flu, but we have a sound basis of immunity to build on, and the mechanism to update as appropriate

I do really know, I am a virologist. What you need to do on mumsnet is look at the sources people are using. It is perfectly clear on this thread that some people are simply regurgitating sensationalist media stories they dont understand written by journalists who have no idea what they are talking about, but know what sells. And some of us are genuine scientists who understand the fundamentals of the topic under discussion.

How is it misinformation? Seems quite clear to me that you need exposure to little germs over the course of the year to avoid being overwhelmed when you get a stronger virus

amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/16/how-will-isolation-affect-long-term-immunity

Because Covid weakened people's immunity. Not them not getting sick 🤦

I honestly don't get it. If I've misunderstood I would love if you could help me understand better.

Why are people suffering a bog standard cold longer this year than previous years?
Why are people suffering d&v, coughs, fevers longer this year than previous years?

Surely these bugs are also weakening people's immunities more than they were before hence why people feel worse than when they last had that bug?

Do you think the WHO are "simply regurgitating sensationalist media stories they dont understand written by journalists who have no idea what they are talking about"?

Along with BQ.1 variants, XBB variants are the most antibody-resistant variants to date. Using pseudotyped virus neutralization assays, XBB.1.5 is shown to be equally immune evasive as XBB.1, the Omicron subvariant with the highest immune escape to date.

XBB.1.5 rapid risk assessment

Have you read it yourself?

thewinterwitch · 13/01/2023 10:29

They mentioned: Immune evasive. Immune escape. Antibody resistant.

I saw nothing about just update your vaccinations.

I do not share your optimism about the pace of vaccine updates v that at which a new variant can emerge and spread.

Many pathogens can dampen the immune system after acute infection

Covid seems particularly good at this, and although dysregulation is more common after a severe case, it also occurs after moderate and mild cases. And can last for months (studies go out to 8 months at present).

So if you catch covid during most peaks, and we have 3-4 peaks a year, then you may well have a damped immune system most of the time, especially as any other infections you might pick up will be that bit more severe or long-lasting, and then have their own immune dampening effect on you.

Cherryblossoms85 · 13/01/2023 14:16

Given the cost of the COVID bullshit is half the reason for the dire state of the public finances, I'm not sure who you think would be paying for more lockdowns and furloughs. The total cost of the shambles was estimated at £370 billion.

RoseAndRose · 13/01/2023 14:38

It's not a case of "lockdown or nothing" though, is it?

And the disruption to the supply chain from major sickness disruption in China is totally unrelated to cost of measures here. But it could make life more expensive here, and indeed cause disruption if Chinese made goods vanish for a few weeks/months

Yes, I don't know why OP framed the issue around lockdowns. It's really obvious that we won't be having anything much in the way of restrictions again here now, maybe a bit of pissing around with masks as a sop at most, and that the most significant impact on us is likely to relate to supply chain and knock on issues. Those could be a pretty big deal, as you say.

Aposterhasnoname · 13/01/2023 15:42

New wave, probably, lock downs, no

This. Didn't care back then, dint care now

Amazing, nothing happened at the end
