Covidd is rising. I just came back from abroad and nobody wore a mask on the plane/ I think that is awful. Liz Trus shoul insist on wearing a mask on all public transport. I caught covi on the plane. Whhen I went abroad previously a few onths ago masks were compulsory

She should go

You could have caught it anywhere though. Why blame the plane journey?

I've just come back from Spain. Didn't even occur to me to pack masks.

TBF - they do still have a masks on public transport policy in Spain . Doesn't apply to international flights but you would be advised to pop one on if getting on a bus there. Unless the bus is a sightseeing tour - then it's not classed as public transport !

We hired cars and tbh I didn't notice any actual public transport. But I didn't come into contact with anyone wearing any masks

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 19:43

We were in lanzarote in July and the only places requiring masks were the pharmacy and public transport.

butterpuffed · 18/10/2022 19:48

Definitely . It'll stop her talking when she's using it in the very near future

Topseyt123 · 18/10/2022 19:12

You are allowed to wear a mask if you wish to. Nobody is stopping you. Many of the rest of us do not want to and are thankfully no longer obliged to.

Liz Truss's fuck ups are many, but this isn't one of them. Sorry to disappoint you there.

The mask police surely died the death long ago, fortunately.

It's about to be her fuck up, when compared to German chancellor or Swiss president.
Both of whom are acting to ensure their health services are not overwhelmed.

This government has lost the plot on public health.

And doesn't even begin to grasp what getting it wrong will mean for the economy

(Do agree that it needs to be proper masks not tatty bits of paper)

GoodShipLollipopBop · 18/10/2022 20:34

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 18/10/2022 18:51

And then we wonder why we have so many more people in hospital with covid!!

Because of course our health services were in so much better shape than say Germany's, so we're bound to breeze through the BQ waves.

Covid will mutate to overcome vaccines and immunity.

It won't be able to avoid masks or air quality measures.

We need a proper consideration of how much debilitating sickness the country can afford.

But there's no way that the hard-right individualists of "you do you, I'll do me" are going to even consider either the economic or health sequelae of uncontrolled high transmission.

Ummm news flash. Covid has mutated dozens of times already and has pretty much overcome the vaccines already. That's why there's so many breakthrough cases. Because they don't even really work. As for masks, the disposable ones and cloth ones actually do very little to protect you. But do what you please to make you feel comfortable and let's others do what they please.

And maybe don't fly or take public transport 😉

That won't be anything that I will consider an issue. I could criticise Liz Truss for many things, but not for lack of mask mandate.

I found masks extremely challenging to wear and usually ended up removing them anyway. I was delighted once they ceased to be mandatory, although I had begun leaving them off long before that anyway. They remain an option though for anyone who does wish to wear one.

Grumpybutfunny · 18/10/2022 23:07

@EdithWeston hate to say it but isolation in the health service is the issue. DH had COVID recently so had to stay off work....he was well enough to plaster the games room. Masks were based on the idea healthcare staff didn't have massively high rates despite dealing with it daily, it later transpired loads had antibodies and didn't know they had been infected. I personally had a typical viral illness that I may have took one day off for or gone in miserable and sulked through the shift.

What's more important than masks is getting boosters out they protect against serious illness, no harm in people getting a mild virus post booster

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/10/2022 23:34

Lol at isolation being the issue in the health service. Unless you are symptomatic and have tested positive there is no isolation anymore. Oddly enough we’ve never had so many off sick with covid.

The less isolation there is, the more covid there seems to be. Which anyone with a vague understanding of infection control could probably have predicted.

MeetPi · 18/10/2022 23:58

Reading through these posts, Rafa, it would seem most have a vague to zero understanding of infection control, even after two years of constant reminders.

You are being ridiculous!

It's treated the same as a cold now

No more drama required

Worriedaboutethics · 19/10/2022 03:29

@EdithWeston

switzerland has not reintroduced masks for public transportation.

i just checked on the FOPH Swiss website.

HelpMeGetThrough · 19/10/2022 05:18

I know old Liz has fucked up a tad recently, but this one isn't on her for a change.

That's so ridiculous. Of course the vaccines work, that's one of the reasons why we aren't seeing anything like the deaths we were seeing before the vaccines. If they weren't effective do you really think governments across the world wuld be ploughing millions into vaccination programmes?

In this situation the vaccines don't necessarily stop you getting infected (ie breakthrough cases Hmm) but they mainly reduce the impact turning the infection into something much more mild.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 19/10/2022 07:16

The prospect of anyone in that Tory government attempting to tell the public to observe a covid restriction is deliciously hilarious.

Buzzinwithbez · 21/10/2022 10:37

You need to work out what is within your own comfort zone op.
I have friends who mask constantly in public spaces and don't eat or drink while in there so their masts are never off. I get it and respect it. (Have to mention though I've never caught covid when in those venues with them).

I went to one of the first gigs to open up - a 3000 capacity venue, when there was a 1 in 15 case rate and was happy to be packed in line sardines at the front. I've continued on like that throughout as live music is our thing, so planes and airports don't concern me.

There are others who live somewhere in the middle and take calculated risks. Personally I think if you can take calculated risks, knowing you might get covid you might as well just crack on, but everyone is different and I accept that.

So OP, if you were worried about getting covid, what steps did you take to mitigate the risk?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 21/10/2022 18:45

This thread has aged like, well, the Truss premiership. I was going to say the lettuce but actually not!

This!! I've never worn one (medically exempt) I've been in loads of places with loads of people not wearing them including transport and medical settings and not caught a thing! Each to their own and that's how it should be kept!

MichaelFabricantWig · 22/10/2022 11:30

I won’t be wearing one and I won’t be voluntarily following any rules the Tories implement around Covid anyway, they have lost all moral authority.
