To ask if we’re heading for another lockdown?

TreeLine6 · 09/10/2022 11:32

So covid cases are rising and like clockwork, the likes of independent sage are back in the media calling for ‘protections’ like masks, isolation and social distancing to “avoid full lockdown”.

Is it time to reintroduce some measures like the rule of 6, a cap on large events numbers and maybe distancing and early closure for hospitality as independent sage are calling for?

Personally I feel that with vaccines and treatments, we are now in the best position we’re going to get with covid and would be very reluctant to comply with further measures, that themselves cause enormous harm.

Here’s Trish Greenhalgh from Independent Sage arguing that lockdown ‘harms’ were a myth twitter.com/saugust06/status/1578432542364946432?s=21&t=o76k4slBM0oainfkfKIQig

Tell my kids that. Or my mum, who is now blind in one eye because her injections were cancelled for months.

Lockdowns never were something we could do indefinitely. Essential, to some extent, when covid 19 was new, we didn't know the consequences or if it would be even possible to vaccinate against but impossible to do forever.

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 09/10/2022 12:51

Medical appointments were stopped for good reason, if you're too ignorant to understand why that's a you problem probably

And the people that died as a result of not having medical appointments? What of them? Fuck 'em coz only covid matters. Are we back to that attitude?

Hhgt · 09/10/2022 12:51

I am a bit worried that some things will be stopped. My children feel they had so much cancelled during lockdown - school trips , parties etc that can only be done at that certain age. And they are finally bringing back school trips again. I am worried these will get cancelled now.

Were the staff wearing masks?

Some of the reception staff were and some weren't but they were behind glass barriers. The staff dealing with patients were.

Independent Sage etc have never gone away. They have been calling for safer indoor air since 2020.

This coupled with the BMJ and The Lancet also the head of RCN RC emergency medicine etc all calling for bring back simple measures to protect healthcare and reduce disease burden.

Other countries never removed their mandates OR have reinstated them months ago (E.g. Germany FFP2 masks on public transport).

Vaccines are protecting the worst of outcomes I.e. death but they are not preventing infections (people cannot work if they are too ill to work) and they are not preventing as much long covid (they offer a positive reduction but it’s not guaranteed protection).

Covid isn’t just the flu or a cold and a higher proportion of those infected have long term symptoms- we don’t know what the future holds E.g. chicken pox and shingles, Epstein-Barr(Glandular Fever) and MS. This is a mass disabling event and causing excess deaths from things like cardiovascular disease.

Go fast, go hard and get ahead is the best plan of action but we in the U.K. are ALWAYS on the back foot.
Small mitigations now E.g. opening windows/using hepa - not passing on infections you already have - and wearing a mask in the supermarket are not big things to do and do have an impact. (Masks do work).
This doesn’t necessarily mean not working - it means if you are infected and can work from home you do. It means if you can’t work from home but can work in a separate office from your colleagues etc do it. Not everyone can but it’s about tiny little things to prevent infections.

I honestly do not see us going into full lockdown again unless there is a terrible variant which looks unlikely right now. But look at the threads on Ambulance waits and Hospital and Testing delays. The NHS is on its knees and it won’t cope with flu and covid swarm this winter (or more it will cope but everything that’s already delayed will be further effected.)

Covid hasn’t gone away and will not go away - true. But there is a difference between making sensible choices to mitigate a pandemic and just putting a head in the sand because people are bored with living through a pandemic.

Covid now is like the flu and with every new variant it gets slightly less strong until it is like the common cold.

SAGE need to be held accountable for their ridiculous forecasts.
What ever they say will happen, just believe the opposite
Lets be real. If SAGE turned round and said that their wouldn’t be a massive problem from now on then they would get disbanded and their jobs would be gone.

No more money for them.

Kennykenkencat · 09/10/2022 12:52

Also when have we ever shut everything down because of flu

RosesAndHellebores · 09/10/2022 12:54

No. But I didn't think we should have locked down previously.

CapitanSandy · 09/10/2022 12:55

Personally I would never ever comply to a lockdown again. I lost 2 years of my life to shielding which I’m still dealing with the psychological impact of. When I did get Covid it was a mild cold with some tiredness.

I know everyone is different though so what they do is their choice.

ancientgran · 09/10/2022 12:55

KatherineJaneway · 09/10/2022 12:50

Really? I'm really not seeing the evidence!! Even my unvaccinated 81-year-old mother had no symptoms.

Is she a vegan runner too?

I've had it twice, first time I didn't know I had it, still don't know when it was as I only found out from a blood test. Second time it turned into pneumonia, doctor was 50/50 about admitting me but I wanted to go home. Two months coughing and in pain and totally exhausted. It was seven months ago and I'm still having treatment for long covid.

I don't think having it with no symptoms or mild symptoms is a reliable indicator of how you might react next time.

Roselilly36 · 09/10/2022 12:55

Skelligsfeathers · 09/10/2022 11:39

No
There won't be and if there is i wll not comply

100% agree.

CuriousCatfish · 09/10/2022 12:05

The hospitality industry is being hammered by rising costs and fewer customers as it is. Another lockdown would kill it off completely.

This. I am so fucking sick of people saying that hospitality should close down again. Anyone who thinks it's a good idea should try running a hospitality business.

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 09/10/2022 12:55

PurpleWisteria · 09/10/2022 12:44

What makes the clinically vulnerable feel safe is infected people wearing masks. It isn't much to ask so that they can take part in society as well.

I don't think there will be another lockdown but there will be some partial closures of schools. There has been one here already due to infected staff.

It's silly to say you won't comply you will have no choice.

Many people are still working from home because they and their bosses like it that way. No going back from that.

Are you clinically vulnerable? You don't speak for everyone who is so please stop it.

Much like the frothers from 2020/21 you really think you've got a clever "gotcha" when you say "you'd have to comply its the law/the pub isn't open". No shit sherlock. As you well know, people mean they will continue to see friends and family, they will continue to have their hair done by mobile hairdressers, they will have parties in houses instead of the pub.

If you want to lock yourself down then do it but you have no right to expect the same from other people. None.

AloysiusBear · 09/10/2022 12:55

Eh?

I didnt even know they were monitoring cases any more. No one cares.

Anyway cases don't matter, only hospitalisations and deaths matter. Are hospitalisations up (other than they always start rising in oct/nov with winter respiratory conditions)

etopp · 09/10/2022 12:56

I didn't comply with previous lockdowns, so I'd hardly comply with further ones.

Though I had a post deleted on MN for saying this during the first lockdown, because it was "triggering". How things have changed.

Beachbreak2411 · 09/10/2022 12:56

I seriously doubt any one would comply again. The government are a shit show and I certainly have lost any vestige of respect for them. Why comply to rules that those that dictate them don’t? Covid is something we just need to live with. And get rid of a Tory government asap.

whynotwhatknot · 09/10/2022 12:57

no we cant afford it-i dont mind if we bring back masks for a while and encourage people to get their boosters but thats it

I’m assuming from your comment that you haven’t lost anyone from Covid or are struggling with long Covid?

Sunnyqueen · 09/10/2022 13:00

Nope, no one is interested anymore.

ATwirlADay · 09/10/2022 13:00

If the country and the NHS can't afford another wave of covid, then yes, it would be sensible to mandate masks in certain places again, to help keep cases down. Doing this would be cost nothing. I don't think I could support further closures or lockdowns though as as others have noted, there is no more furlough money.

roarfeckingroarr · 09/10/2022 13:00

No chance

FrippEnos · 09/10/2022 13:00

lickenchugget · 09/10/2022 12:50

Agreed. Also don’t know of anyone who has it, has had it recently, or anyone still testing. Went to GP this week, no staff were wearing masks either.

But at my GP they are all still wearing masks and the receptionist is still behind screens.

And it says on the door wear a mask.
It different depending on where you are.

Lost a couple of people to Covid.

Lost more to lockdown

ATwirlADay · 09/10/2022 13:01

I don’t know anyone in real life who give a shit about covid

Doctors and nurses staffing Covid wards do.

FrippEnos · 09/10/2022 13:02

No there won't be another lockdown but I would like the government to sort out ventilation in schools.

I am also quite happy to wear a mask, it was nice being able to go to the shops without being coughed or sneezed on.
