Do people still test for a cold?

saffy56 · 01/09/2022 11:10

Do people still test for a cold/sore throat? My DD has a cold and sore throat and we have no tests left. She wants to carry on as normal but my DH says she mustn't leave the house until she has tested negative. I didn't actually think testing was still a thing.

OP posts:
MsMariaReynolds · 02/09/2022 13:10

I can’t afford the tests.

How dare those visiting vunerable people or those that are vunerable themselves want to be kept safe.

You test ALL you like. 5 times a day if you want to. But don't pass judgement on those who are choosing not to.

All right to laugh at those that test though. Don't see you commenting on those posts.

I'd actually quite like to stay alive for a bit longer.

YomAsalYomBasal · 02/09/2022 13:24

Yes still testing.

Pootle40 · 02/09/2022 13:26

PainsandAches · 01/09/2022 11:27

Of course

Decent people will continue to test

Are the decent people the opposite to the selfish ones?! Jesus.

peasandcarrrotttss · 02/09/2022 13:48

@PaddingtonBearStareAgain

Are you going to be doing this forever?

Never visiting anybody, or having a visitor, without a quick poke up the nose first?

I mean we don't do this for other potential illnesses, we don't have a test for any potential tummy bugs brewing or other viral things.

peasandcarrrotttss · 02/09/2022 13:49

@Pootle40

Yeah apparently the ones who have been vaccinated and now want to live a carefree life away from testing and symptom spotting are not decent.

passport123 · 02/09/2022 13:52

GP here - none of my patients are testing. They don't have tests any more or the cash to buy them.

Well for now I will be
If you could test for a cold or flu or noro before visiting someone on chemo, would you?

LimboLass · 02/09/2022 13:59

Not tested since mid 2021.

Comefromaway · 02/09/2022 14:11

This thread is not about visiting someone on chemo, it's about going about every day life.

I was replying to the poster who said about visiting people. That's why some people are still testing including my friends, dad, partner etc
And I test because I need to know if it's positive

Chirmed · 02/09/2022 14:26

No, stopped that nonsense now...
Actually never started it in our household

FinallyHere · 02/09/2022 15:51

One of the best things about covid is that I haven't had any symptoms of cold since it started. Brilliant.

If you read the op, that is not what the thread was about.

I would of course be cautious and do everything I could to protect someone vulnerable if I felt unwell.

But day to day testing and isolating over a cold when there is nothing underlying is pathetic.

Mariposista · 02/09/2022 22:37

Leave the poor girl alone! Unless you want kids to stop telling you that they are feeling unwell, let them be unless they are physically too ill to do something.

Mariposista · 02/09/2022 22:41

Justsleep · 02/09/2022 00:45

No, can’t afford to buy tests.

I can but can think of lots of things I’d rather spend that money on. If I want to invest in health in some way, I will spend money on some healthy food.

Abraxan · 03/09/2022 14:44

I mean we don't do this for other potential illnesses, we don't have a test for any potential tummy bugs brewing or other viral things.

Colds and flu, and tummy bugs, haven't put me in hospital or left me with a life long health complication requiring two different mediation daily, so far.

The only other viral issue that came close was pneumonia. I am now vaccinated for that and take any signs seriously.

Likewise, as covid did cause those issues, if I am feeling ill then I will test. It then means I can access antiviral treatment as soon as possible to avoid a repeat event.

I don't expect anyone else to test, bar dh and dd, and I don't avoid situations and places. I still travel, go out, work, etc. BUT if I or my household feel ill or have symptoms we test to be sure.

A simple (and free to me/my household) test can help to reduce my risk of being very poorly - I had to have a cat 1 ambulance sent to me due to a very real risk of heart attack or stroke after all.

Why wouldn't I test in that situation?????

Neverendingdust · 03/09/2022 14:48

Of course you test if you have symptoms, Covid is still out there. The Autumn wave will be picking up soon, the more people are aware and isolate themselves when + the less likely it is to be disruptive.

serenghetti2011 · 03/09/2022 14:49

I test due to work symptoms or not
then I felt a bit off recently sure enough bloody covid I felt awful I wouldn’t wish that on anyone let alone someone vulnerable I think people should just be sensible if unwell
stay away from hospitals, elderly and anyone vulnerable

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 03/09/2022 18:24

PainsandAches · 01/09/2022 11:27

You sound like the covid version of Marie Antoinette.

Most people can no longer access free tests, and basic living costs are spiralling. Covid has a wide range of potential symptoms and even if people only do it when having respiratory symptoms, which would exclude a lot of symptomatic cases, that's still money a lot of people simply will not have.

In answer to the OP, some people are still testing yes, and by definition it's those who can either afford tests or access free ones. Lots of others aren't.

passport123 · 02/09/2022 13:52

What none of them ? And how on earth would you know if they were or weren't ? I'm hoping you actually aren't a GP given the stupidity of that statement .

TurquoiseJungle · 03/09/2022 19:33

I did each time I got a cold and have now have covid three times in just over 3 months... so getting more frustrated and unsure how sustainable it all is.

sueelleker · 03/09/2022 19:48

I had what I thought was a cold. I wouldn't have tested, but I had 3 appointments for that week. Lo and behold, it was covid!

PuzzledObserver · 03/09/2022 19:59

We did, because our ‘cold’ appeared a couple of days after being with someone who tested positive the day after we’d seen them. We were negative - that was Thursday.

Friday, I had a bit of a temperature so tested again, because we were due to meet a vulnerable friend the following day. Negative.

Saturday we went and saw the friend, and then went to a social thing, where I was pretty antisocial, because I was feeling shit. Had a high temperature. Felt even more shit on Sunday, so stayed in, while DH, who just had a cold but felt OK, went out.

Monday morning tested again - positive. Him too. Ironically, that was the day we both started to feel better.

Stayed in for a few more days, but tested on Thursday - negative.

For me, the difference was the temperature and the general malaise/fatigue, aka feeling shit. I’ve had cold-like symptoms and sore throats several times and tests have been negative. But I didn’t have a temperature and didn’t feel shit.
