Paid deposit on holiday, now I don't want to go

I paid a deposit on a holiday with my partner and we have a date in August to pay the whole holiday off. The holiday is in October. Now I don't want to go. I have covid a few weeks ago and then yesterday and today I am dealing with another virus, maybe norovirus. I am sick.

I don't want to go on holidays now because I just see it as welcoming more sickness into my body and my life. I don't think I want to do this again. The idea of being so sick in recent weeks and then going out and mixing with others on public transport and on flights and on a cruise does not appeal to me. I would prefer to stay at home and spend my hundreds locally.

If this was just me, I would lose the deposit and be happy with my decision but I do have a partner to consider.

If you don’t want to go then don’t but your partner might not be too happy.
You reason for not wanting to is a bit daft though

Nocutenamesleft · 22/07/2022 15:31

Then don’t go?!?

you’re an adult who is able to make their own decisions

LIZS · 22/07/2022 15:36

If you paid a low deposit there may be an additional cost to cancel. Check the t and cs for a sliding scale of cancellation fees.

junebirthdaygirl · 22/07/2022 15:42

Don't make decisions when you are unwell. I had Covid last year and went on holidays in October and it did me the world of good..Came back with more energy and it shortened the Winter.

knottsberryfarm · 22/07/2022 16:23

I had covid the week before our holiday. Spent most of the time berating myself for booking a holiday and I was never going abroad again. Went on hols (covid was gone before anyone asks) so as not to disappoint kids.
Day we got back I booked another holiday.

Everything is shit when you are not well. Wait and decide later.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 22/07/2022 16:27

people have always got ill, on flights and while on holiday, just like they do when staying at home and working. I’m not quite grasping why you don’t want to go when it’s still weeks away.

Could you postpone it to another time? Depends on the T&C’s of your contract obviously.

AhaLyn · 22/07/2022 16:43

I agree with pp, don’t make decisions when you feel rough. Unless you are maybe cev etc which I get, you may not want to be having anything else thrown at you.

Ilikewinter · 22/07/2022 16:53

So going on holiday wouldnt bother me, however I wouldnt choose a cruise right now, im on a cruise board on facebook and the covid levels on some ships are very high....as a side note my friend went on a cruise recently, they had to provide a negative LFT before boarding, her friend caught covid 2 days before going so got her DD to take the test instead ..... i imagine this happens alot !!

At least at a hotel you can choose where you go and avoid, on a ship your stuck with circa 2000+ people

rookiemere · 22/07/2022 17:04

I would say don't make any decisions whilst you're still feeling unwell.
Check how much you'd actually lose if you cancel - it could be a lot more than just the deposit- and wait until nearer the payment time to decide.

Frogpig · 22/07/2022 17:11

I would also add that we've had years of not being exposed to germs now so everything is going to hit us hard and exposure might be the best way forward to build up immunity again (dependent on not having health conditions that need additional consideration)
I definitely agree not to make decisions while being unwell, it's like PMS and everything feels worse and the clouds lift once you're feeling better.

hopeishere · 22/07/2022 17:21

October is ages away. You're bound to be feeling better by then. I'd not cancel. It sounds a bit extreme

Threetulips · 22/07/2022 17:58

But you got sick at home - it’s no different to catching bugs abroad!

Because if international travel the likely hood is you’ll catch whatever circulates regardless of holiday status.

Goawayangryman · 22/07/2022 19:47

I mean it's your lookout, but if I was your partner and looking forward to a nice break I'd be pretty cheesed off! You can't life your life thinking that because some bad things have happened recently, more bad things are bound to follow. That way madness lies.

LovinglifeAF · 23/07/2022 10:38

Up to you but it’s 2/3 months away. It doesn’t follow because you took ill now you’ll be ill then.

Afterfire · 23/07/2022 10:44

I would be careful cancelling if your reasons are anxiety related — which they are. As others have said you could just as easily be unwell here, have an emergency here etc. I suffer with similar anxieties about my health but once you start pandering to them and cancelling things it’s very hard to change your mindset. You’ll soon feel better and then you might feel differently.

Did you see the news today?

The world health organisation has put money pox at modern risk.

Oh god, now I definitely don't want to go. This brings me right on back to February 2020 when the world was divided on the novel coronavirus. We had a holiday booked in January for August and I knew in February we weren't going to go.

When this holiday was booked, I wanted to go. Then I got sick and sick again. Not there's this fucking money pox and I don't want to go anywhere.

Sorry folks money pox should read monkey pox.

Are you a man who has sex with men? WHO also said that they are the main group being infected.

you sound very anxious.

do you realise you’re as likely to get ill at home as anywhere else?

pinklavenders · 24/07/2022 11:31

Not really.... being at home and only going out for essentials with a mask is rather less risky than mixing with loads of people at crowded airports, on the plane, eating out in restaurants etc...!

I would rather be sick at home in my own room and house than somewhere out foreign. My medicine cabinet is stacked with all sort so medicines and there's plenty to pull be throat dose and get over the other side. Whereas if I was to get sick abroad, I would be nearly on my own.

Sounds like a boring life. Life is for living

LIZS · 24/07/2022 13:30

Why would you be on your own if you are going with a partner. We always take basic supplies - painkillers, imodium, antiseptic cream, plasters, bite cream, elastic bandages etc - just in case and are enough until we can get to a pharmacy.

ApplesandBunions · 24/07/2022 14:28

Can you see if you would be able to move it to a later date?

That still seems to be an extreme and over anxious way to be. I don’t know anyone still living that way any more, even at home.

Fair enough. But the chances of you getting monkeypox are negligible. Yes you might get Covid but the likelihood is it won’t be any worse than getting a dose of the shits, or heat exhaustion, or a bad hangover, or other things that people have managed to cope with on holiday for years. I think it’s sad to still be restricting life due to fear like this, but it’s your one life and up to you how you live it and what risk appetite you have :)
