My daughters passed out after vaccine??

we are going on holiday end of next week so decided to get both our girls jabbed this morning (5 and 8) to give them a bit of extra protection while away.

8 yo was fine but two hours after the jab we were having brunch out and my 5 yo just dropped her juice on the floor and went limp. I carried her to the car with hubby by which point she was completely white with very blue lips. She was totally unresponsive and her eyes were part open/part closed.

we took her to a&e and they did a load of tests including glucose, ecg, BP etc only thing that came back was low BP so I’m guessing she fainted but it was bloody scary.

just checking to see if anyone else has had this? I have a friend who’s DS took a funny turn after with something similar so wondering if this is a thing??

my girl is home and okay now but exhausted. Just worried about her. Interested if anyone else has had anything like this. TIA

Sorry to hear about your DD having such a scary side effect from the jab. Hope she’s ok.

however - doesn’t it take 2 weeks for the immunity to take effect anyway? Seems like a daft time to get immunised.

I know a young wonan who passed out,
It turns out she is allergic to the vaccine

Oceanus · 25/06/2022 17:48

Holy moly! What vaccine did yout kid take btw?

Cocothebear · 25/06/2022 17:49

@cooldarkroom thanks for the productive comment, do you know how she found out she was allergic by any chance?

Both my son and myself have passed out after vaccines (not Covid) and it was apparently a vaso vagal (?) response. Not sure if that has to be straight after though. How is she now?

Siepie · 25/06/2022 17:58

I fainted after my first covid vaccine. I have low BP and have fainted several times in my life. The first time I was about 7 and just got too hot in a school assembly - I've also fainted after a flu jab, after getting a piercing, in hot weather, and when I've had vomiting/diarrhoea bugs.

Make sure she has plenty of water. Hopefully she won't become a fainter like me! But if she does faint again or continue to feel dizzy, the GP may be able to do a 24h BP monitor or give you advice on keeping her BP up.

Oceanus · 25/06/2022 17:59

I've had a vaso vagal response and I think it's always immediate. It's the body's response to a perceived threat: you freak out and then you pass out on the spot.

What do you mean here OP!

bronzepig · 25/06/2022 18:19

There's lots of threads on this @Cocothebear

It's pretty common to have a vasovagal response after an injection or anything remotely invasive (I had one after a nasal swab several years ago, mortifying).

It's nothing to with the components of the vaccine, but a physiological response to an injection. For future blood tests or injections you should explain to the HCP she's prone to this as they'll make sure they do it with her lying down.

Aside from an analyphylatic shock (which this clearly wasn't, as it has very specific symptoms), a vaccine can't trigger an immediate response like that.

BakewellGin1 · 25/06/2022 18:21

DS blacked out approx 10 min after his vaccine. He was checked over etc but apparently its a common reaction. Afterwards he was just weak and tired. Fine an hour or so afterwards

As it happens he was fine after 2nd

PAFMO · 25/06/2022 18:22

One of my colleagues fainted both after the first and second dose. DD's friend after the first.
It's a pretty common side effect apparently and generally not to do with allergies.
Good that she got checked out.
Enjoy your holiday.

bronzepig · 25/06/2022 18:23

If it becomes something that happens often (teen girls are notorious for fainting), your DD just needs to learn when she's feeling funny she'll feel better if she lies down with her legs raised.

Triggers can be any type of health care procedure (eye exams, injections etc), not drinking/eating enough, if you're under the weather - particularly if you've got a blocked nose, and standing up for long periods of time.

GladysGeorgina · 25/06/2022 18:42

Dd now 17 is a “fainter” First time on Xmas day aged around 9 when she jumped out of bed too quickly and passed out having a wee on the toilet. She was checked out too and a faint was diagnosed. Since then she’s fainted when having vaccinations, ear piercing and when she got her finger jammed in a door. It doesn’t always happen in these situations-sometimes she’s fine. DD knows when it’s happening and needs to lay down with her legs raised and have something sugary to drink when she starts to feel better. She recently had her first blood test and was v anxious. A few minutes afterwards she told the phlebotomist she didn’t feel well and the colour drained from her face. 10 minutes lying with her feet up and Costa’s sugariest drink and she was fine. I’m an occasional fainter and feel awful for hours afterwards. Hopefully this is a one off for your dd.

cooldarkroom · 26/06/2022 00:01

Sadly, I dont know all the details
She had a second vaccine in a controlled environment in hospital.
She had another reaction, but under surveillance
This is in France

KangarooKenny · 26/06/2022 07:10

Feinting is very common post vaccination. She needs to eat before she goes again, and ask for it to be done lying down.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 26/06/2022 12:18

I actually faint 1-2 times a year and look the exact same, white as a sheet, blue lips, eyes rolled. Mine is also because my blood pressure drops and usually happens when I'm too hot, unwell or scared.

She should be fine with some sugary drinks and TLC. It drains the adrenaline as well so likely to be knackered.

It can be scary but if the docs found nothing wrong it's likely just a common or garden faint ❤️

Abraxan · 26/06/2022 12:26

Fainting after a vaccination isn't exclusively to the covid vaccine. It can after any vaccine, and also after other types of events/procedures/activity.

It needs checking out and any allergy etc ruled out, but most fainting is just a way someone's body reacts. Many people are either a fainter or not.

Friend's adult dd faints after things like this - she did after having previous vaccinations and also after having her ears pierced too. She told the vaccinators when she went for her covid jab both timed and they gave it to her in a separate room, laid down and monitored afterwards. She was fine with that approach in the end,

Dirtylittleroses · 26/06/2022 12:31

I’m not sure this is vaccine related, it was two hours later. Why did a five year old have low blood sugar? Had she eaten? And if so what?

She said blood pressure not blood sugar

Nomad916 · 26/06/2022 12:54

Vasovagal would occur at the time of the vaccine. 2hrs after is more likely to be allergic reaction. Allergic reaction can cause low blood pressure.

Change123today · 26/06/2022 13:20

My elder daughter fainted after having the first covid jab but fine after second.

my youngest when having her baby jabs had a reaction to them, her follow up vaccines where done in hospital. Covid ones though done in usual setting and she was absolutely fine!

terriblyangryattimes · 26/06/2022 13:28

When I had my last vaccine a guy in the waiting area bit came out and lay flat on the floor as he knew he would faint as he does after every injection.

He then did exactly as he said he would and came round a minute later with all the volunteer ladies flapping around him. They said he wasn't the only one who has this reaction.

Hopefully it's a one off and she's feeling better soon .

Mindymomo · 27/06/2022 15:29

My cousin volunteers at a vaccine centre, they had 7 people feint one day. My adult DS said he was very hot and felt like he was going to faint after his first, so took a bottle of water second time and he was fine.
