I know more people with covid now than at any point before

Including myself!

My work has half the staff out, 4 of my friends (in various locations from Manchester to Edinburgh) are positive and several of my sports club. These groups aren’t linked in any way. No one is seriously ill (thankfully) but most seem to be fairly unwell - minimum one week off work kind of ill. It’s been the worst bug I’ve had in many years.

It seems strange whilst there is almost zero talk in the media and yet so many in my life.

Is this is now? Regular repeating cycles of being unwell with covid now jabs are wearing off? I guess we just have to accept and be grateful it’s not making us seriously ill - but it’s no fun and I am worrying about long covid as I’m exhausted.

I agree the only people I know who have had covid are double, triple whatever jabbed! I cant make any sense of it all?

We are a family of 3 unvaccinated (not anti vax before I get lynched) and none of us have had it!

Sure we will get it at some point.

I suspect the people who are most likely to still be testing frequently at this stage are also more likely to be vaccinated than the general population.

adhdforme · 27/06/2022 12:01

I live in the south and I don't know anyone that's had it recently.

HailAdrian · 27/06/2022 12:03

A week off work eh? 🤣

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/06/2022 12:08

I know 4 people who have it at the moment
My DS1
DS2 recently recovered after the second time
A nurse friend currently has it for the 3rd time
Friend who's a runner caught it by someone breathing on her at the start
Rates are rising rapidly here.. Bath/ Wiltshire

Peridot1 · 27/06/2022 12:11

I know lots of people who either have it or have had in the last couple of weeks. In Australia, UK and Ireland. Including me who has it currently having caught it in UK and developed symptoms in Ireland.

Definitely seems to be a lot of it around to me.

MajorieEks · 27/06/2022 12:40

There’s lots of it about at my nursery, both in staff and children. We aren’t asking anyone to test so the numbers are probably higher as lots of children have been off with a cough or temperature, on top of those who have said they have tested positive for covid.

Same here.
I have it, and 7 other members of the family have or have had it, in last 2 weeks.
Its my third time of getting it 😬

CoastalWave · 27/06/2022 12:51

Don't know anyone - but then anyone, don't know anyone who's still testing.

Lots of people with colds at the minute - maybe it's actually covid.

Stop testing!!

WingingItSince1973 · 27/06/2022 12:52

I'm in the Midlands and it's swept through my large family and friend groups. I've never known it like this. But I guess people and mixing more, masks aren't being worn etc etc. So far no one I know has been seriously ill with it including some very vulnerable friends.

Pandaeyes50 · 27/06/2022 13:07

Well that 6 kids now in dds class who have it along with 2 Teachers and loads of other school cases Two other whole families and another friend.
Of course that is just the people who have tested. Note to self better test dd tonight.

THIS!

Jules912 · 27/06/2022 14:41

We had a big in person event at work last week and quite a few are now off with Covid. So far I seem to be ok but only had it in March ( and now have long Covid) so hopefully I've still got a bit of immunity.

YourLittleSecret · 27/06/2022 15:07

I also know of several people who have had a worse infection this time, is it the vaccine wearing off or is the BA.5 strain more severe?
Most boosters are well over 6 months old now, having said that the people I know who have it now are young and healthy but have been quite unwell so maybe BA5 is more severe?

Stop testing!!
People will test for various reasons.
Many will test if they get cold symptoms becausethey have vulnerable friends or family.
Those who, like me are immunosuppressed. I had covid last year and was in hospital pretty ill. If I get it again I need to know asap to get treatments that weren't available then
Anyone who works in health care has to test.
Many employers don't want people going into work spreading covid.
Some people do have regard for others and don't want to spread it to others.

In spite of being vulnerable I don't wear a mask now except on a plane or in healthcare settings. I am resigned to catching covid from time to time.
I don't agree that any compulsory precautions are needed. Unless everyone consistantly wore FFP3 masks it wouldn't work and ther eis no chance of that.

This. I've had a sore throat recently and decided to test as we still have lots of tests at home. I tested positive (for first time ever!). I was expecting to become ill, but apart from one afternoon of tiredness and a sore throat I was fine the next day, thankfully.

I would never have known it was covid had I not been at home and having lots of spare tests lying around,

pinklavenders · 27/06/2022 15:27

Are they actually I'll or just staying home precautionarilly?

pinklavenders · 27/06/2022 15:28

We can wfh so I assume actually ill

Fordian · 28/06/2022 08:24

I just tested positive for the first time. It's a heavy cold, headachey, cough, temperature and weirdly sensitive skin. I got it from DH who tested positive last Saturday.

I, too, know a lot of people from all over with their first bout!

ZenNudist · 28/06/2022 08:29

Not here. 2 friends have it but that's not usual. Anyone I know who's had it have barely been ill. No cause for panic.

Delatron · 27/06/2022 09:25

I think it’s just finding all those who haven’t had it yet. Unless you’re one of the few who appear to have natural immunity. The more we catch it the more our immunity builds but it’s a miserable process. Plus the vaccines help. But it will be like this for the next few years unfortunately then will settle down a bit.

I read an article that said it wouldn’t be a bad thing if cases were high over the summer as you get a bit of a population immunity boost going in to winter. I know some people seem prone to getting it multiple times though. Others less so and do generate a good immune response.

You may have a fair point there.

My Dad had it 2 weeks ago and he had never had it before.

DSS tested positive Sunday, he hadn't had it before.

Two of his other friends have tested positive and they hadn't had it either

Woman I have worked with for 30 years tested positive Saturday - never had it before and missing her retirement (her mom passed away from it in first wave and she was her carer and her husband had it but she didn't get it either time).

Friend not had it before - tested positive this morning.

Another friends son tested positive for first time.

Me and Dh haven't had it yet (despite DH working in care home throughout) - we are expecting to get it this time round.

Zazdar · 28/06/2022 09:52

I don’t know anyone with it. A few weeks ago had a stinking cold with a sore throat that made me feel like death. It took me three weeks to shake it completely. I’m sure I passed it on to several other people. Negative test for covid.

Mummy289 · 28/06/2022 11:36

It’s rife in south east.
Currently have it for the first time, I noticed a lot of people have stated it’s like a cold, I’m mid 30s, have asthma but i feel awful. Can’t stop coughing, literally can’t stop, dizzy, light headed trying to look after a baby and I don’t even have the strength to hold her 😭. Triple vaxed too. Day 4. I don’t feel safe to drive or take my daughter to school. Bit worried about catching it regularly and feeling like this a lot.

But what do you (or anyone) think can actually be done now?

Vaccines have helped massively in changing the picture. I agree AVs should be more widely available too. It should now be factored in it’s going to be a permanent drain on the NHS and budget should be increased to accommodate treatments/staffing etc.

But it’s so contagious now nothing can stop it spreading. The government are crap I agree but there’s no point in wasting money doing things that make no difference just for the sake of being seen to be doing something.

Maybe masks would make a difference if people wore decent masks properly but they don’t and that is what it is.

Nothing more can be done. It’s natural to want to control or stop shit things happening but sometimes we can’t.

This contains a seaweed extract carrageenan that may help prevent coronavirus replication and can be used for children. Might be worth looking into.
