Has your primary aged child had their Covid vaccine?

Just that really? AIBU to vaccinate mine? I don't think so?

Seems to me that none of the other children at school have. Even though they've been available a while.

Am I in an area that has more people deciding against it than others?

Or are most people not vaccinating their 5-11 year olds?

Grandson age 9 has had his first, looking forward to his second jab in July.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/06/2022 11:38

YANBU to vaccinate your child.

My oldest is 7, all the adults in our family are fully vaxxed and boosted, all my kids have had the CP vax. We are v pro vax. When the letter arrived for DS we thought YES! But we never booked it and as time as gone on don’t feel the need. None of his friends have been done, he’ll still be able to get covid (whereas all the other vaccines they’re given prevent them from getting the illness?), he’s already had covid (it was pretty horrid admittedly!) and covid seems to be fading away.

So IANBU and YANBU either. Whatever you want!

TheCanyon · 01/06/2022 11:40

7 year old twins both double jagged, 13yo double jagged and boosted, 11yo said no. I've absolutely no idea if any of their friends have been for theirs?!

SecondarySnob · 01/06/2022 11:42

Thanks all. Think you're sort of showing both halves of my brain.

DC have had Covid twice already. Both times pretty mild.

So I'm guessing most people feel like I do in the sense is it worth vaccinating? As of course DC will turn down the chance if I give them the option!

But also I feel we should take it as it's being offered and it's the right thing to do to protect them and others.

Ugh.

Mine has had first jab. We're behind schedule because he had covid and had to wait 12 weeks for the jab.

I had considered waiting till autumn to get the most out of the protection offered.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/06/2022 11:45

That’s a good point, we may assess the covid situation going into autumn and think about the vaccine again then.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 01/06/2022 11:45

My DS(10) had his first dose on Sunday. It was only delayed because he tested positive in March. Both my DC I've had vaccinated as soon as they could be. I just feel it is the right thing for me to do.

Sally872 · 01/06/2022 11:46

Both mine have had it, most I know have.

Roundandballlike · 01/06/2022 11:47

Eldest is 13 and had first one, second was booked but he ended up catching covid so we had to cancel. Youngest got symptomless covid at the same time. I haven't gone out of my way to book new appointments and I don't feel the urge to. I have had a conversation with youngest who is 11 and told him it's up to him. He hasn't asked so far.both me and partner are double vaxxed and boosted.

DS13 yes, two doses; DS10, none. I am of the mindset of it not being needed now 🤷🏻 but both are fully up-to-date with the standard vaccines.

BammBamm · 01/06/2022 11:51

Mine haven't had the vaccine. One has had covid twice and the other once that we know of.

We're both triple jabbed but I feel it's unnecessary at this point for them and although the risk is minimal, I don't feel like it outweighs the benefit to them unlike other vaccines. My DM and DP have had side effects from the vaccine that have also swayed the decision.

They have had all their other vaccinations and we paid for DC1 to have the men B vaccine so not against vaccines generally.

lucyapplejuicy · 01/06/2022 11:51

Mine haven't and won't be, in fact amongst the parents I haven't spoken to at school or would seen the majority aren't having it. No judgment from me though do what's right for your family Smile

shoofly · 01/06/2022 11:53

DS1 had his first jab aged 15 then couldn't get his second because he got covid. He was quite unwell and still not recovered enough to get 2nd. (Although Dr can't suggest anything to help but doesn't think he should have 2nd because he's still unwell)

DS2 (aged 11) didn't have 1st because he caught covid so we had to wait.

He really should have it, must get on to it tbh

orwellwasright · 01/06/2022 11:54

Most of my kid's peers all had covid in the spring - massive surge round here - so it's too soon to vaccinate.

I will do once he's eligible though.

Twizbe · 01/06/2022 11:56

My 5 year old has had his. No health concerns and I'm sure he's had covid more than once and was fine.

However, we have a holiday abroad booked for august. At the moment under 12s aren't included in most travel restrictions, but that can change. I don't want to risk it so got him done.

I see it like any other travel vaccination I've had.

Greyarea12 · 01/06/2022 12:19

Mine (9yo) has had hers. I wasn't going to but I see it as we don't know what is going to happen with covid and what strains could come about even if that's in years to come so that's what swayed me. Don't know if any of her friends have had theirs but I just see it as do what you think is right for you and your family.

ToastofLandon · 01/06/2022 12:25

Absolutely not. My 5 y/o fortunately isn’t vulnerable, so the risks outweigh the benefits.

KrisAkabusi · 01/06/2022 12:26

Both of mine had it as soon as it was offered.

TheKeatingFive · 01/06/2022 12:28

We didn't bother. DS had covid very mildly, there didn't seem much point right now. I'll keep an open mind, I'm not ruling it out, but no strong motivation to at the minute.

Sepiarose · 01/06/2022 12:33

No. The studies I looked at showed poor efficacy after 28 days and my son had covid recently so has natural immunity. I'm triple vaxd plus had covid in April so not antivax. We have decided not to.

AppleandRhubarbTart · 01/06/2022 12:38

No. I don't think it's unreasonable for other parents to choose the vaccine though, it's one of those calls that was pretty narrow. I'm not ideologically opposed and don't rule out DC having it at some point.

Of other parents I've discussed it with, I know one who made a definite choice to have it, more who are choosing not to and a few who intend to get round to it but haven't yet.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/06/2022 12:39

Nope and won’t be either- no need- children shouldn’t be jabbed for the sake of adults

Leftie202 · 01/06/2022 12:42

no none of my children are having it. I didn’t have any of them either. If my eldest who’s a teenager said she wanted it then I wouldn’t stop her, but my younger ones won’t be.

SkattieCat · 01/06/2022 12:44

My DD hasnt yet. She's only recently been eligible as she had a positive covid test just over 3 months ago. However if we book it now, the second jab will be due while we're away over the summer. I plan to book her in for early September, so that she can have the second one before we plan to go away in December and before winter sets in.
