Think DS has covid, when should I worry?

I think 11YO DS may have Covid. He was sat next to a positive case last week and woke up this morning burning hot with a terrible head ache. Very faimt positive on lat flow but going to test again tomorrow to be sure.
His temp is 38.8 and he feels completely rotten. When do I worry and what would the process be if he needs to go to A&E with covid symptoms? We don't drive. It's his temp I'm really worried about I can count the times he's had a fever on one hand.

He’s clearly got covid.

I wouldn’t worry with that temperature. If he needs it, give paracetamol and/or ibuprofen and let him rest.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 04/04/2022 17:56

Unless he’s got some serious underlying health issues I wouldn’t worry at all. Keep an eye on him, lots of water and chill and calpol

Isobelslider · 04/04/2022 18:00

I wouldn't worry at all TBH.

My 9YO has asthma so I was worried when he got it. He was really very ill with chicken pox.

He had a temperature overnight the day he first tested positive. Dosed him up on calpol the next day and he was fine just lazing on the sofa. Temperature had gone. The following day he was back to running around and didn't need calpol. His chest was fine and he didn't use his inhaler more than usual.

beattieedny · 04/04/2022 18:02

Relax. Mercifully it's mild in the vast majority of kids. GWS young man.

HermioneWeasley · 04/04/2022 18:04

I wouldn’t worry. Some calpol for his temperature. I’m sure he’ll feel fine in a day or two

Malalaa · 04/04/2022 18:04

He clearly has covid. You had a positive test.
You don't need to go to a&e. If you need medical advice ring 111 or GP.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 04/04/2022 18:07

Plenty of fluids even ice poles etc if he doesn’t want to eat and rotate calpol/ibuprofen so there’s something in his system.

TheKeatingFive · 04/04/2022 18:07

Calpol, rest, fluids. My 7 year old was like that and right as rain by lunchtime the next day.

Thekormachameleon · 04/04/2022 18:09

Unless there's some massive history you've left out likes a transplant patient or similar then you are overreacting

Alternate ibruprofen and calpol, plenty of fluids and let him rest

Overthebow · 04/04/2022 18:24

It doesn’t sound like he has it badly, his temperature isn’t that high. I wouldn’t worry.

MumbleCrumbs · 04/04/2022 18:25

Sorry yes probably over reacting a bit. I'm CV and spent a year completely terrified/developed huge health anxiety and it took a toll so I panicked a bit when I saw the result. Its the fact he almost never gets ill too. The last time he was this unwell was when he was three with chicken pox. He also feels quite dizzy when he's walking about.

Use calpol to get the temperature down. If the temp gets to 40 call 111 and they'll tell you what to do but honestly don't worry, he will be fine.

Patchbatch · 04/04/2022 18:33

Calpol, lots of fluids and rest.

KylieCharlene · 04/04/2022 18:34

Try not to let him see how anxious and worried you are, OP as this won't help him and you don't want him to panic.
My DS (12) currently has Vivid and I'm trying to reign in my anxiety. It's horrible I know.
DS is on day 4 and has come down with a terrible cough but his temp is down and he no longer has a headache.
I'm giving him lots of ice lollies and treat foods and generally just trying to keep him upbeat.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 04/04/2022 18:36

My nine year old has it currently with exactly the same symptoms. The temp lasted a couple of days and got better with alternated paracetamol/ibuprofen. He'll be fine OP- just keep him comfy with plenty of drinks and meds

Nidan2Sandan · 04/04/2022 18:38

You dont worry. That's not a crazy high temp.

You give him paracetamol and treat him as you would have done with a virus in 2019.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 04/04/2022 18:53

My DS had dizzy spells with it too. Symptoms only lasted a couple of days and he was a bit groggy but otherwise fine after that.

Daqqe · 04/04/2022 19:43

That temp is pretty normal with covid. In my (quite vast) experience of covid reporting in a school, very common for kids to get a 48 hour fever with covid & then bounce right back like nothing is wrong..

Remember, fevers are nothing to worry about unless they are sky high (talking 40+ & refusing to come down with painkillers plus the child is acting very unwell). A ‘mild’ fever of 38-39 is simply your bodies reaction to fighting off the infection. It’s actually a good sign your immune system is kicking in & working very hard!

Your boy needs a dose of calpol & lots of rest. I’m sure by day 5 he’ll be climbing the walls to leave the house 🙏🏼

Kabsy30 · 04/04/2022 20:32

Although not nice for him, I wouldn't be panicking at all. Just use paracetamol or even alternate with ibuprofen if paracetamol alone isn't reducing fever, plenty of fluids, rest and TLC and I am sure he will be just fine again soon.

My son (10) was poorly for a day or two with covid. He was really poorly for like one day then fine the next.

I hope your son feels better soon!

neveradullmoment99 · 04/04/2022 23:24

My daughter [10] has had it twice. First time, a bit of a temperature, controlled with calpol. She was fine after a couple of days.
Has had it again. A cold and then asymptomatic.
I really wouldnt worry.
I work in a school. Most have had it no problems.

neveradullmoment99 · 04/04/2022 23:26

In fact not just most..all have had it and come back to school without any intervention only a treated like a normal childhood illness and not even symptomatic most times.

bluebaul · 05/04/2022 00:47

I would r really worry at all. Regular calpol and fluids. DD is the same age and exactly the same.

bluebaul · 05/04/2022 00:48

*wouldn't worry

MumbleCrumbs · 05/04/2022 07:40

Thanks all for the reassurance. DS definitely has Covid, the line is dark and came up straight away this morning. I'm gutted, we've managed to avoid it for such a long time Sad. I'm CV too so a bit worried about catching it, though I won't isolate from DS. His temperature is lower today though.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 05/04/2022 07:46

Glad to see he's on the mend .
Chicken pox was much worse for my ds
There's no avoiding it unfortunately just try not to worry too much
